Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

It was removed . people are disgusted not envious

What a mad thing to do. A perfectly good coat in the bin now and for what, to go and buy a synthetic one that isn't good for the environment either?

I know a homeless man that wears a sheepskin and I really think it saves his life in winter.

NastySting · 21/07/2024 11:19

They don't hate your coat, they are looking quizzically at the weirdo wearing a thick coat in the warm, wet summer.....
Ladies would traditionally have only ever worn their furs in very cold, dry weather to preserve the pelt and avoid any unusual smells.
The rate you're going it definitely won't be fit to pass onto another generation.

Try harder next time OP

There's been some very strange threads in the last 12 hours, all seem to be written in the same way. Wondering if it's the same poster using different names.

Spirallingdownwards · 21/07/2024 11:20

No one is jealous of a mangey bit of tat from a bygone era. Noone associates it with luxury anymore

Wearing it in summer and saying you believe it's because of jealousy just marks you out as being a pretentious twat.

Persiancouscous · 21/07/2024 11:21

People wear leather / eat meat etc, so can't understand the hate but you as a person comes across horrible and basically brag about it being fur, of course you will get criticism, you sound intolerable

Waxdrip · 21/07/2024 11:21

Nobody is jealous. But I agree that it would be wasteful to send a serviceable second hand coat to landfill.

Sparklfairy · 21/07/2024 11:22

I sort of agreed with you, until you started bragging about a 'statement piece'. So you're wearing fur just to show off and be controversial. Just no.

But the animal has died. To throw it away out of principle is even more disrespectful to that mink's life IMO. If I lived somewhere cold and I inherited it, I'd wear it sometimes too. I absolutely don't agree with buying fur and funding the awful industry, but in this situation you'd be throwing it out because it's not 'cool' to wear fur anymore. It doesn't bring the animal back to throw it away.

That said, you are strutting about in fur, in summer, and think you have a valid reason because you didn't buy it. And anyone who has a problem is 'jealous'.

“People have a ridiculous response to fur, most of which was farmed just like other animals- and nowadays mostly vintage. It's because it's fluffy, so must have come from nice fluffy animals.”
😂
Mink are not “fluffy” or “nice”… they are vicious predators and cause a real problem when they escape from mink farms. (Mink farms are horrible anyway, these days I think they’re mostly situated in Eastern Europe or Russia )

I remember the huge uproar there was on here a few years back about Canada goose coats containing coyote fur and it being cruel. From people who don’t realise that due to losing their natural predators, the coyote population exploded and they started destroying the eco system. The government orders a massive cull every year to try and keep them under control. The fur that Canada goose used was from their own licensed hunters/trappers who were employed by the government to cull the coyotes. So the pest coyotes were going to die anyway, Canada goose just benefitted from its remains

Purplecatshopaholic · 21/07/2024 11:23

Ha, ha, nice one op - bored are you?

LlynTegid · 21/07/2024 11:24

The only valid place for a fur coat I think is OK is for a historic theatrical piece. My grandmother had one not worn for many years, and that is what we did with it after her death.

ForGreyKoala · 21/07/2024 11:24

I wouldn't be seen dead in a fur coat - "statement piece" or not. As for wearing it in summer 😂

theeyeofdoe · 21/07/2024 11:25

Can you not just hate on the hate?

anothervoice · 21/07/2024 11:26

‘Are people jealous of my fur coat in summer?’

No. They think you are a div.

Tomatina · 21/07/2024 11:27

People won't know you inherited it - they'll assume you bought it, with the money going into the fur trade which as I'm sure you know, is disgustingly cruel. And when they look at you they will just wonder how many beautiful creatures had to die to make one stupid coat for a human who doesn't need it.

Gillypie23 · 21/07/2024 11:28

They aren't jealous love. Probably laughing because you look like a dick.

PrincessPheebs · 21/07/2024 11:29

Jealous of a smelly old fur coat 😂😂😂

It’s been hitting up to 29 degrees on and off for the past few weeks with intermittent rain where I am in the UK. I’d also be staring at anyone wearing a fur coat in this weather.

ButternutSoup · 21/07/2024 11:29

I think the problem is that fur has been seen as something desirable, and if it weren't for the anti-fur activists, it probably still would be. They have shone a light on the extreme cruelty in the fur factory farm industry. Most of it comes from China, and unfortunately, the animals are kept in horrific conditions and then usually skinned alive as the skin comes off more easily. They are then all thrown onto the back of a truck, dying in agony.

I saw a video of it years ago, and it still haunts me. I decided never to wear fur as I don't want to contribute to people seeing it and thinking it looks nice, and then perhaps wanting to buy one themselves. It's important to make people aware that fur is made incredibly cruelly, so we shouldn't support the industry. Of course the animals that suffered and were killed for your grandmother are long dead and no longer suffering, by continuing to keep this practice alive, we contribute to the continued torture and horrific death of these animals. By reducing the demand and the industry and educating people on the horror involved in it, we can contribute to its dying out.

Calm down Snoop Dog.

@DollopOfFun I don’t know you but I love you 😂😂 I really needed the laugh your comment gave me this morning 😊

Cnidarian · 21/07/2024 11:31

Why do you think it might be? If you put aside jealousy, what other reasons might people have for disliking real fur?

Were you not a bit confused that your daughter went on a completely illogical crusade to check notes not save an animal that was already long dead & deny revenue from a charity? What was the ‘win’ here?

BobbyBiscuits · 21/07/2024 11:31

I don't mind vintage furs. I had one off my mum, a rabbit one. No mink sadly?! My cousin's wife has a mink but she's really dodgy though so I think it's a new one.
Just lie and say it's fake if someone doesn't like it. I got bullied for wearing mine. I have another brown one but it's gone a bit manky and I haven't worn it for years.

DTisawazzock · 21/07/2024 11:32

What does "hating on me" and "hate on my fur coat" mean? Is it the same thing?

redalex261 · 21/07/2024 11:33

It’s vintage. No-one should be breeding or killing anything purely for fur, so no to a new one. If you like it wear it, no point it being burned or sent to landfill.

Not my style (especially in summer!) but each yo there own. Maybe tell people it’s faux fur!

oakleaffy · 21/07/2024 11:33

Fur only looks good on its rightful owner.

The animal that was born with it.

''It takes up to 40 dumb animals to make a fur coat-But only one to wear it''

I do use leather {dog leads horse tack} which may seem hypocritical, as it is an animal product- But fur definitely makes many feel bilious.

Why do people hate on my fur coat

Most charities root them out and do not sell them. Once the daughter pointed it out I very much suspect the item was also removed as well as the post as they wouldn't want the adverse publicity.
