Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

They hate you cause they ain't you?

viques · 21/07/2024 12:03

Wear what you want, personally I prefer not to wear second hand clothing that the first owner died a painful death in, but maybe I am just a tad too sensitive.

MugPlate · 21/07/2024 12:03

It’s just weird, it’s a weird thing to wear in 2024.
Just because something is old doesn’t negate how it was made. Old child abuse images don’t somehow become less horrendous just because of the passage of time.
If you lived in a cabin in the mountains, I can see the value, I suppose, but in modern life, it’s like walking around with a whale oil lamp.

I think it’s just jealousy.

Very unlikely for most people tbh.

There is nothing that would induce me to buy or wear a fur coat.

Though tbh, in this day and age, I'd assume anyone wearing a fur coat was wearing faux fur. There are a lot of very good quality imitation ones since the popularity of fur dropped several years ago.

I always assume it's faux fur too tbh.

If you're unlucky enough to get close to someone with a real fur there's no mistaking the God awful stench. No amount of professional cleaning in the world gets rid of it and the wearer must be nose blind to it. I'm surprised none of them have friends who point this out to them but I guess they wouldn't want to hurt the person's feelings.

ladycarlotta · 21/07/2024 12:05

I inherited a couple of very old fur coats but don't wear them much. Yes, it's good to continue to get use from vintage pieces, avoid fast fashion which is ethically terribly on many levels etc etc. Plus they are unbeatably cosy and efficient, they're beautiful, the craftsmanship is head and shoulders above most things you can get today.

However, I do feel that by wearing them I'm endorsing the idea of fur as a desirable luxury. One of them is sealskin so presumably the result of seal pups meeting a very horrible death. Not that I believe fur farms are/were any more ethical or pleasant as environments for living creatures. So I tend not to flash them around or expect others to feel comfortable with them.

lacyviolet · 21/07/2024 12:05

I'm vegan so I understand the argument that it's hypocritical in some ways for those who eat meat and wear leather to attack those wearing fur. But it's a blatant symbol of exploitation of animals by humans for no purpose other than vanity. The fact that it's a vintage piece means nothing to many, since it demonstrates that the wearer is happy to perpetuate what the coat represents, and in any case they may not even realise it's an old coat.

If I inherited a fur coat I wouldn't throw it away though, I'd donate it to a local theatre group, who may be able to use it for period productions.

sunburnandsangria · 21/07/2024 12:05

Obviously a goady 1st post, but anyway:

For some reason people see fur as different to meat or leather - so you'll be judged accordingly. Animal still farmed, animal still dies, same welfare checks can be applied to each. Real fur is far more sustainable than plastics-based fabrics.

Using and maintaining your vintage coat is far better for the environment than buying a new coat made of something else - and far better than faux fur that is filling the planet with microplastics for generations to come.

Getonwitit · 21/07/2024 12:06

Hoppinggreen · 21/07/2024 10:57

I am not in the slightest jealous.
I judge people who buy fur, this would be seen as some as hypocritical as I am not a vegan 🙄
I wouldn't wear fur either, I think it looks awful and it never gets cold enough to need it here, landfill is probably the right place for it

Do you eat meat or wear leather ?

CascaChan · 21/07/2024 12:06

I think your being unreasonable in that you think people showing disgust are jealous of you. I actually agree with you that you shouldn’t get rid of the coat and wear it if you wish to, but you have to accept that many people find fur repulsive wherever or whenever it came from (I am not one of them). Why don’t you try telling people it’s an expensive imitation? Unless you can smell that it’s fur? Some older furs do have a bit of a stink to them.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 21/07/2024 12:07

I would be willing to bet that more animals suffer a gruesome end due to mass manufacture of plastic-based synthetic fake fur than do from real fur.

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/07/2024 12:08

ScholesPanda · 21/07/2024 11:01

People have a ridiculous response to fur, most of which was farmed just like other animals- and nowadays mostly vintage. It's because it's fluffy, so must have come from nice fluffy animals.

Most of the same people will wear leather and eat meat, but everyone does that right, so that's ok.

Reminds me of a friend who cried when I told her the lamb she ate was the same as the lambs who she saw in the fields. She thought they 'must be different'.

Agree.

It is hypocritical, everyone is, even vegans!

But as a vegan, do you not think it's better for a meat eater to care about some issues relating to animal cruelty and exploitation, and in the case of fur, torture? Or is it preferable that they don't care about any animals?

MugPlate · 21/07/2024 12:11

Just to add that by wearing (old) fur you are normalising new fur.

@Megifer , I'm not saying I think it's hypocritical, I'm saying I understand the argument that it is.

Why do you think vegans are hypocritical?

Cherrysoup · 21/07/2024 12:13

‘Hate on it’?

You know fine well why people dislike fur and wearing it means you deserve the insults. Sell, landfill, donate to a museum. My mil had several and none of her dils wanted them.

ClonedSquare · 21/07/2024 12:14

I'd judge someone wearing fur because it shows a weird detachment, to me. I don't want to wear the fur of another creature, I find the idea creepy. It was stripped off the corpses of animals (hopefully once they were dead).

To me, it's akin to people who have taxidermy animals. I don't think they're cruel. But I think it's weird to treat other animal's corpses as a commodity for fashion or enjoyment.

(And to be clear, I have similar objections to leather and other skins. I'm not a vegetarian because I believe food is a different matter).

HaveAWordWithYerselfWouldYa · 21/07/2024 12:14

Wear it with pride @CleanCityBird !

Or even AT Pride - you will go down an absolute storm!

The amount of looks and respect you will receive will show you what people really think of you - but maybe you know that already 😂

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 21/07/2024 12:14

i am bemused by the thought of someone wearing a fur coat in the UK in July. Winter in Svalbard, ok I see your point.

its all a bit ‘mob wife’ isn’t it?

Why do people hate on my fur coat
Anothernamechane · 21/07/2024 12:15

From an ethical pov I don’t really have any issue with someone wearing a second hand real fur coat. You can’t kill an animal twice and it’s more environmentally friendly than binning it and replacing with fast fashion.

I doubt people are jealous of some ratty decades old fur coat you’re wearing in summer though babes.

runrabbitruns · 21/07/2024 12:15

By wearing it you’re supporting the idea that it’s not a revolting act to wear the skin of another animal. HTH.

AzureAnt · 21/07/2024 12:16

BallooningInTheSky · 21/07/2024 10:59

Wear it if you want. Just don’t be disingenuous about wondering why on earth people shout at you about it.

They should probably visit somewhere like Siberia in deepest winter and shout at those who wear animal fur to stay alive
And I say this as a vegetarian who doesn't eat dead flesh, but I don't criticise those who do

Werweisswohin · 21/07/2024 12:17

I have no desire to own or wear pelts, thank you very much.

CruCru · 21/07/2024 12:18

I don’t think this post is genuine - mainly because it’s summer and wearing a fur coat would be sweaty (even if it isn’t boiling, it’s really muggy).

Fur is a weird one. I have no idea whether the (imaginary) fur coat is a nice one. It’s difficult and expensive to look after fur properly - it needs specialist cleaning and I expect that most dry cleaners won’t know what to do with fur these days.

A new, good fur coat will cost at least £10k.

Demonhunter · 21/07/2024 12:18

I'd call you worse than that but I'd get banned. Maybe someone could skin you and wear you as a "statement piece"
