Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

People have a ridiculous response to fur, most of which was farmed just like other animals- and nowadays mostly vintage. It's because it's fluffy, so must have come from nice fluffy animals.

Most of the same people will wear leather and eat meat, but everyone does that right, so that's ok.

Reminds me of a friend who cried when I told her the lamb she ate was the same as the lambs who she saw in the fields. She thought they 'must be different'.

Exactly! Squirrels are just rats with fluffy tails, but god forbid you feed them warfarin...

That looks like something off BooHoo or PLT.

It's definitely a real fur coat, in a shop in Alaska.

It's 'fur coat, no knickers' you're husband is right.

I was told 'she's all fur coat and no knickers', meaning she may look like she has money/friends/etc, but really hasn't these!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2024 14:06

A fur coated animal will use the tiny erector muscles in the skin to raise the hairs and trap air .
If you wear a coat of fur , you cannot control this ( on account of the fact those receptors are dead . Same as the unfortunate animal)

The logical way to wear a fur to trap air would be inside out with the fur to your skin.
But you wouldn't . would you ?

And yes I know people say it is warm. But there are far more efficient ways to insulate yourself .
And FTR , I don;t wear feather or down either . My winter coat is padded with plastic from recycled bottles .

Well, wearing fur, even inherited fur, suggests that wearing fur is OK, and encourages the fur trade. The rearing of animals for fur is both cruel and dangerous - we have a mink problem here that is killing our wildlife because of escapes from mink farms.

Mink are active, lively animals that are kept in small cages in crowded, cramped conditions. They are then asphyxiated and skinned. Other aspects of the fur trade are even worse. You really don't want to know how some wild tigers are killed. By wearing your coat, you are tacitly supporting this business.

They look pretty tacky these days anyway.

Davros · 21/07/2024 14:19

My mum had a full length mink coat. She thought we'd be fighting over it when she'd gone, we buried her in it

Didimum · 21/07/2024 14:29

I think second hand fur already in circulation is fine. I have a fur from the 60s. And I’m a vegetarian.

Wearing inherited fur suggests wearing inherited fur is OK. You don’t get to categorically decide how others against fur feel about fur already in circulation.

Nonetheless, wearing fur yourself suggests that you think wearing fur is OK. I doubt OP's coat is signposted 'Old, inherited fur.' It still looks tacky as well.

Waitingfordoggo · 21/07/2024 14:51

I know it’s been a shit summer but is it honestly cold enough anywhere in the UK for a fur coat? You don’t sound very hardy.

Not doubting it's real, it just looks like it's from a cheapo site like BooHoo or Everything £5 🤣

TunnocksOrDeath · 21/07/2024 14:58

If you went out in head-to-toe vintage Chanel wool-crepe, it is unlikely that people would be accosting you in the street to question your ethics, so it's really not jealousy of your 'statement piece' they just don't like seeing dead animals as clothes.
Personally, as someone who doesn't eat animals, I think that wearing a mistreated dead animal multiple times as a coat is less unethical than eating a mistreated dead-animal once, as a sandwich, but that's quite a Utilitarian standpoint, and I understand why many people do not see it that way.
(For clarity, I don't wear fur).

Anything looking tacky is your personal opinion. So once again – you can’t categorically label anything with your personal opinion.

It’s not OP’s problem what people ‘think’ she means by wearing fur. She thinks wearing old fur is OK, she does not think wearing new fur is OK.

People need to mind their own business.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 21/07/2024 15:14

I would never wear fur, aside from the fact that the fur industry is horrific, it's completely unnecessary in this climate and you no doubt look ridiculous. I wouldn't "hate on" you. I would quietly judge you.

My DD was given a vintage suede coat with a fur trim. It is so beautiful and from a different time when fur was seen as acceptable. The coat exists and it would be a horrible shame to see such a lovely coat go to landfill. She didn't buy it, she didn't perpetuate the fur trade by accepting and wearing it. She has worn it and if anyone was to challenge her I think she would probably stand her ground and explain her reasons.

If anyone challenges her, tell her to inform them that growing cotton and manufacturing and shipping new clothes are all massive environmental threats that will kill far more animals than the fur trade.

PointsSouth · 21/07/2024 16:03

You can't have this both ways. You say the coat is 'a statement piece' which means it's intended to be noticed and to provoke comment. Then you get upset when people notice it and comment.

Of course she perpetuated the fur trade. She did that by wearing it and validating it as being acceptable.

No actually in this case it's not an opinion. Tacky and thick- no question.

Suede is a byproduct of the meat industry. If we're going to eat meat, it makes sense to make use of the whole animal. There is a lot more regulation - in this country at any rate - of the treatment and slaughter of meat animals. Animals are not slaughtered specifically for their skin, but for food.

Yes, I know what suede is- but was talking about the coat in relation to it's fur trim. It looks like fox fur.

I think you need to look up the definition of ‘opinion’. A lot of people wear fur, even more people wear second hand fur. And even more than that wear faux fur.

You think it’s tacky – cool. It’s your opinion.
