Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

If anyone says anything tell them it's vintage fur and if you weren't wearing it it would be in landfill which is clearly not better.

I wouldn't buy new fur but vintage fur I have no problem with

It's just the same.
As PP mentioned, old images of historic SA don't make the suffering any less- and the wearing of fur is endorsing it and the ghastly conditions in which the animals lived and the brutal manner of their deaths.

Gassing {up to 15 minutes} or an electrode in the mouth and up the anus to create a circuit that ''doesn't damage the pelt''.

Vintage fur is obviously less morally bankrupt and I don’t think you’re wrong to keep it for its purpose.

However-

Assuming they’re all jealous of you is hilarious! I’d never be comfortable wearing one despite my opinion on you doing so, maybe they could just sense you’re a bit of a knob? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wonder why some posters can’t post without being rude and insulting. Who’s the knob here, I wonder??

It’s just weird, it’s a weird thing to wear in 2024.
Just because something is old doesn’t negate how it was made. Old child abuse images don’t somehow become less horrendous just because of the passage of time.
If you lived in a cabin in the mountains, I can see the value, I suppose, but in modern life, it’s like walking around with a whale oil lamp.

I don’t think wearing a fur coat equates with old child abuse images. That is just insane to equate the two.
child abuse is child abuse. No laughing matter.

Btw I know someone who got scabies from playing with an old fur coat as a child.

Scunnered123 · 21/07/2024 13:26

I inherited one. I don't particularly like them so don't wear it, but I wear leather daily and wouldn't judge others for wearing one.

I remember my great aunts fox fur wrap. It was the most hideous thing. It was just a fox draped around her shoulders, eyeballs, wizened limbs and everything. She looked ridiculous but swanned around thinking she was lady of the manor.

She used to say everyone was jealous. But they actually crossed the road to avoid her and her hideous dead animal.

If it wasn't outing I'd post a picture of it, it put me off fur for life.

Why would it be outing to post a photo of your great aunt's fox wrap? I would imagine there must be many many thousands of Mumsnet users, and the likelihood of anyone recognising you from a photo of a fox wrap must be incredibly small. I'm sure lots of people will have seen wraps like that - my grandma had two of them, and I think they were quite common among Victorian and Edwardian women.

parkrun500club · 21/07/2024 13:30

Better to wear an old fur than a modern coat giving off loads of nanoplastics!

Much as I dislike the fur industry, scabies would be very unlikely to have been caught from a fur item.

Scabies mites like to live under the skin of a living person or animal.

However, once saw some dumped clothing in the woods as a child- a fur coat was there, sodden by the rain and absolutely smothered in flies- really horrid.

These things...Nightmarish. Where the head of the poor Fox is made to ''bite'' it's tail to make a ''collar'' for the human wearer.

There was a ghost story I read as a child that featured a mink brooch - the Mink grew like a parasite on the wearer's coat and eventually devoured the wearer.

Can't remember the name of the author, but would have been pre 1970's.

Edit...Story probably is ''The fur brooch'' by Dulcie Grey.

Be careful of wearing fur in warm weather. It will crack. They should be in cold storage. I have vintage coats but I don't wear them. Most of my friends don't either and we are country. My grandfather was a farmer so I understand exactly how animals are processed.
Charities do sell the coats on to vintage dealers. They get sold to the film industry.

The previous poster is right they are worth peanuts. Mink meat is used in the dog food industry, the process of culling is the same as pigs. There is no waste. Rabbit pelt is more expensive than the meat.

Personally Im not offended but I don't like other people's values being discredited. I work with vegetarians and vegans. I would keep my animal products to myself.

5128gap · 21/07/2024 13:42

I'm vegan but wouldn't 'hate on you' for wearing the coat to keep you warm. It exists already and the animals that died for it would be no less dead if you threw it in the bin, so arguably if it keeps you warm they didn't die for nothing. You didn't buy it and contribute to the trade, that happened already, and using it instead of buying a new coat is greener.
However, I do judge you for thinking its a 'statement piece' and people are jealous of you. No one would be remotely jealous of the statement they would read from a woman wearing a fur coat, especially in July. You would look eccentric to say the least.

DC did astronomy club for a few years at school. I seriously considered getting one off Gumtree.

I'm confused. What does astronomy have to do with fur coats?

Klippityklopp · 21/07/2024 13:54

If you want to wear it wear it.
It is totally your choice but if you really think others are simply jealous I think you are being either very naive or stupid.
Others may have different views to you regarding the wearing of fur but I doubt very few of those shouting are actually jealous.

FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater · 21/07/2024 13:57

Hate on your fur coat?
That is not a gramatically correct sentence. I may vomit on your fur coat but hating 'on' it is just ridiculous

TheSandgroper · 21/07/2024 13:59

Thank you @oakleaffy . Better that you said it, not me. I’m half a bottle of wine down.

The logic of a child.i didn't take part in elephant poaching for ivory back in the day, but I still wouldn't own it.
