Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

I think you need to look up the definition of ‘opinion’. A lot of people wear fur, even more people wear second hand fur. And even more than that wear faux fur.

You think it’s tacky – cool. It’s your opinion.

No , not up for discussiom as far as I'm concerened. It's like being racist or in favour of the death penalty

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/07/2024 18:25

Faix fur isn't fur

Saoirse96 · 21/07/2024 18:29

People are mad. And they are very selective what they choose to be self righteous about. What about the batteries in our phones that come from child labour and exploitation in Africa? What about diamond rings and other precious jewels ripped out of other countries? Or people happy to buy cheap clothing and fast fashion, made by child and slave labour? I see you Shein people. They're far worse than someone wearing a vintage fur coat!

I'm a vegetarian and I think what we should be aiming for is sustainability. Fur is a natural material, it is biodegradable, and renewable. While I wouldn't promote the manufacturing of new fur coats, (only in the west mind, lots of indigenous NEED fur clothing to keep warm and is part of culture), there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing vintage fur. It's already dead - why waste the lives that died to make it? Isn't binning it more cruel.

Saoirse96 · 21/07/2024 18:34

P.S. also - you're all telling me you don't own any suede or leather shoes? What's the bloody difference?

Or are all your kids seriously in Clarks' vegan range?

Are you so uninformed you can't tell the difference between bye products of food products and fur.?

So the OP's jacket is a by-product of a now by-gone period and industry....

If you are so concerned about waste, please re-align your priorities...

Nobodyknowsitall5 · 21/07/2024 18:42

This is so funny.

Saoirse96 · 21/07/2024 18:43

Both products necessitate an animal to be dead. You buying leather still puts money into a butcher's hands 😊 as Clarks etc obviously pay them for the leather!

verabarbleen · 21/07/2024 18:44

Absolutely this!
Im the furthest possible from being a vegan but at least proper vegans aren’t hypocritical like the majority on this thread!

Well I agree with you on one point, that fur is biodegradable! Which incidentally puts paid to all the posts saying “But it’s better to wear fur than put it into landfill. “

Landfill is the best place for it, gives all those microbes and invertebrates a chance to make the death of the original fur owner worthwhile.

Bet you shop at Shein 🤧

TonTonMacoute · 21/07/2024 18:51

I liked the story about a woman wearing a mink coat and someone came and yelled 'how many poor creatures had to die so you could wear that coat?'

'Just one, my mother in law'

My MIL had a mink jacket which we now don't know what to do with. I thought it was now sort of okay to wear old fur, but I can't imagine ever doing it unless we get power cuts this winter.

Just lost your self respect I mean money there.

Never mind.

HeFellOffaDivingBoardinGuernsey · 21/07/2024 18:53

I am sure you are very superior for saving a load of dead rodent skins from land fill by carrying them on your body

mink coats are pretty cheap now. Because no one wants one.

🤣 unless you've hacked my bank, I still got my money hun

But tell me, why does vintage fur get such a different reaction from leather?
IKEA sell cow hide rugs that are pretty popular too! Don't see people spitting at them

Hun? Wrong board for huns , we are vipers here.

To answer your question it’s probably because the hide from cows and sheep is seen as a by product of their primary purpose, which is currently the production of meat. And in former times glue and fertiliser. So thereby using a resource efficiently.

The fur used for the OPs coat was the primary purpose of the animals involved deaths. Probably isn't much meat on a mink.

Some people would say that diamonds are the by-product of colonialism too. Doesn't quite make it right?

Landfill is the only place for it. The whataboutery on this thread is risible.

Bin all ivory, all wood harvested from the rainforest, your cobalt phone, clothes from any fast fashion outlet, all precious jewels, all leather and suede, wooly jumpers, sheepskin rugs, and become a vegan that only eats what you grow in your garden ( this discounts most beers that filter by fish internal organs)

Dismantle all buildings in the UK built by profits from slave labour too, and bomb the haribo factory

Then, by your logic, you can judge the OP and not be a hypocrite
