Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

It shows the need for back up plans and procedures doesn't it?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/07/2024 09:12

I'm logged in for work and all seems to be working.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/07/2024 09:13

Was just coming on to start a thread after seeing the live feed running on the Guardian.

I guess it's an inevitability given our reliance on technology.

Shreddedpolitics · 19/07/2024 09:15

Not worried in the slightest. Everything seems to be working here.

Bit of luck you don't need a GP appointment, to be catching a flight etc then ....I'm alright Jack...

PassingStranger · 19/07/2024 09:17

Are supermarkets ok?

muggart · 19/07/2024 09:17

Could this be a cyber attack? That's a dcary thought.

socks1107 · 19/07/2024 09:18

So far my work is operating as normal. ( NHS ) which is a reassuring!
It's not good though and shows our over reliance on tech

It's possible. At the moment it seems like someone fucked up an update but who knows.

Certainly cyber attacks are an ongoing huge threat given the world's total reliance on technology but also there's no room for incompetence in writing new software and all that shit when the consequences of messing up are potentially bloody awful.

Yes I'm worried about this.
A week or so ago Sainsbury's couldn't process card payments when I was in doing my shopping.. I had some cash on me that day but I'm off to the supermarket today and don't have any cash as back up .

Createausername1970 · 19/07/2024 09:23

The old saying "don't put your eggs in the same basket". Don't put all important functions in the same Cloud.

Dinobooklover · 19/07/2024 09:23

Desperately need a gp appointment and was told to "call back later to see if its fixed". But I can still log on for work.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 19/07/2024 09:24

And people laugh at me for insisting to pay in cash wherever possible.

TappyGilmore · 19/07/2024 09:24

I’m in New Zealand so it’s Friday night and the working week is over, but supermarkets, petrol stations etc are closing because of the outage. Most banks here are affected (three out of the main four) so no electronic payments.

greentreesblueskies · 19/07/2024 09:25

In Gail's and EVERYTHING IS FREE!

hattie43 · 19/07/2024 09:26

I couldn't log in to Vanguard this morning but at the moment everything else seems ok

Boredlass · 19/07/2024 09:26

I work at Amazon and everything is down.

ImRonBurgandy · 19/07/2024 09:27

I'm at Paddington. Leon is cash only but Costa is fine

Ineedanewsofa · 19/07/2024 09:31

The news coverage isn’t really helping, it’ll make people panic - the issue will already be fixed but it’ll take a few hours to roll the fixes out to all services. Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot by not managing the messaging around this

GoldieLocks09 · 19/07/2024 09:31

Anyone know if the CHAPS payment issue will affect house purchases? I’ve not yet had a response from my solicitor but we are doing a simultaneous exchange / completion today… moving van ready to go 🙃😫

Indeed. I remember a thread on here recently and those if us who said we keep emergency cash for times like these, were laughed at and told the cloud was unlikely to crash. Oh dear.

Having said that, I have just transferred some money from my account to my son's account and it's gone though. Whether he can spend it though, is another matter 😜

Where do you keep your cash, under the bed, ir in a bank?

Heidi1976 · 19/07/2024 09:33

It wasn't a cyber attack, it was a dodgy code update at Crowdstrike. Someone is losing their job after this!

In our gun cabinet.

It will do if the bank of any of the law firms in the chain are impacted, or the firms themselves. Good luck. One of my first thoughts this morning was for people in your position.
