Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Waitrose is cash only. I always keep some cash aside for when the tech goes rogue.
Sainsburys and M&S are OK.

LlamaNoDrama · 19/07/2024 10:49

Techs great, until there's a problem. I think it's assumed there will never be a huge issue but I often wonder what would happen if there was a huge and devestating hack at some time.

Sweetswede · 19/07/2024 10:30

That's really bad. I don't think internal NHS systems should be connected to the internet.

Its not an internet issue, it’s a Crowdstike update that has gone horribly wrong and affected machines are in a reboot loop until someone can log in via safe / recovery mode and delete the faulty update file.

Like I said, I am not in the UK.

The U.K. government has issued no advice like that. As ever, Sweden is far more sensible.

The fact still remains that a cashless society is a bad idea, and will hurt the most vulnerable in society.

TooTiredOfThisShit · 19/07/2024 10:57

Sounds like some people are going to really struggle today.

For balance - I'm currently at a smaller UK airport, and it's near enough business as usual. Everyone is having to queue up to get boarding cards printed, they're not scanning QR codes (if you're travelling today, and you have access to a printer - print your own boarding card at home!) but so far only one flight delayed by 40 minutes.

Trinity65 · 19/07/2024 10:57

All of the apps I use are working , apart from my Bank.

I don't use many apps but the ones I have are

X
Telegram
Instagram
Facebook
Tik Tok
What's App
and Mumsnet of course.

Don't need to go shop Today or contact the Surgery so they may or may not be affected too.
I just think this shows what a disaster it all is when something goes wrong..

I think I remember watching something on BBC news a year or a couple of years ago though..? A UK politician advicing something similar, not anywhere near like our folder but still advice. But I don’t suspect it went down well.

Trinity65 · 19/07/2024 10:58

Oh and Amazon Prime (seems to be up and running but, again, don't need to order anything so not sure on that)

Gcn · 19/07/2024 11:00

Our main patient management system is down.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 19/07/2024 11:01

I never get why people as so keen to try and trip others up.

Of course I still rely on banks, but I use cash wherever possible. I keep enough in the house (in a safe, covered by house insurance, only a few hundred) for emergencies.

We need to keep cash in circulation. I won't use businesss that don't accept cash.
I will Bacs trades people if they prefer it etc but I make a conscious effort to use cash

Getonwitit · 19/07/2024 11:02

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

Lol, and is that how you pay utilities?

You do know you can take your bill to the Post office and pay it don't you. What's so funny about using cash ? Those that rely on IT are not laughing today are they ?

bonzaitree · 19/07/2024 11:02

Gutted that my work laptop is fine….

They would have been accused of scaremongering. Can’t have the masses running wild scared.

We don’t even have any bunkers in the U.K. anymore. I live right near to a massive Cold War one, but it’s fallen to ruins and full of water from photos people have posted.

My gran who lived through WW2 always kept enough food in her freezers for about 6 weeks. Most people in cities don’t have enough space for that though mind.

Anyone know if the CHAPS payment issue will affect house purchases? I’ve not yet had a response from my solicitor but we are doing a simultaneous exchange / completion today… moving van ready to go 🙃😫

Oh, that’s so stressful. Fingers crossed for you. 🤞

There are so many things that can and do go wrong on a Friday that can leave you stuffed over the week-end when moving house, that I always insist on a mid-week completion date.

When we sold our previous house, we had a Wednesday completion and we’d moved out on the Tuesday evening with everything into storage and we were relaxed and sailing on a boat when the money went through the next day.

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 10:23

So what are you meant to do to feed your family of 5 for the next 24 hours?

It’s my shopping day today, I have no bread milk, dog food or anything for dinner, unless pasta on its own with one carrot counts. I’ve also got enough petrol to get me to the supermarket but not back.

If all card systems were down and I didn’t have cash I’d be stuffed.

But I keep cash at home, so I’m not stuffed, because supermarkets accept cash still.

This is why we need to refuse a cashless society. Who cares if Starbucks refuse cash, you don’t need Starbucks. But if supermarkets start refusing cash we are heading in a bad direction.

I think it's unusual not to have at least a few days worth of food in the cupboards and freezer.
We always have rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes, tinned pulses, herbs and spices, stock cubes, tinned tuna, frozen peas and sweetcorn.

I work at Amazon and everything is down.

Really? I've placed orders with Amazon this morning and had automated emails confirming them and payments went through. Also had confirmation of deliveries coming today. Nothing not working as far as I can see!

Differentstarts · 19/07/2024 11:06

All the people who seem to live like old mother Hubbard you do realise it's more expensive and not good for a freezer to have it running while completely empty

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/07/2024 11:07

Minsters are being urged to call a Cobra meeting apparently.....

I've placed an Amazon order this morning with no issue and also had something delivered about an hour ago that I ordered yesterday.

HowardTJMoon · 19/07/2024 11:08

Amazon's got a vast IT infrastructure. Their main online platforms don't run on Windows servers so should be fine. Their in-office systems might be a different matter.

PToosher · 19/07/2024 11:08

I work for in IT for a large multinational company, some of our systems are down, I can't do any work. My boss says to enjoy the sunshine until things are working again.

StrangerOnThePlane · 19/07/2024 11:09

I've also used my card at Co-op this morning without any issues and saw a couple of people getting money out of cashpoint.

I usually have enough to food in to cobble together 3-4 days' worth. But it's not that rare for me to get down to almost nothing.

Also, there's a difference between enough food to keep a family alive, and enough food to keep a family happy (one of mine hates pasta/rice/noodles etc, and only really eats potatoes and bread as carbs, so I could still have quite a lot of food in the cupboards, but still have a very unhappy child!)

Seagrassbasket · 19/07/2024 11:09

My email got hacked a couple of days ago and I’m having a nightmare trying to get it sorted.

I wonder if it has something to do with this?

(I am not tech savvy in the slightest as you can probably tell)

Marilynmansonsthermos · 19/07/2024 11:09

It’s blatantly a cyber attack, despite the denials from the cyber security company. They would never admit this or the value of the firm plummets. Russians are probably behind it.
