Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Just back from Sainsbury’s - no issue with systems or with card payment. I didn’t even realise there was an issue until I got home.

I work at Amazon and everything is down.

Me too!

Because maybe Friday is their shopping day?

Because maybe they need to put a tank of petrol in the car to get to work or go see an elderly relative or whatever?

Your shopping day and essentials aren’t the same thing, that’s pretty obvious. I’m sure they’ll be fine for a couple days without the weekly shop.

I'm awaiting an Asda delivery and downdector is telling me Asda has issues and my bank Nationwide, I know my order has been picked, I had that email early this morning but doubt it will get delivered, I'll keep you posted!

My Asda delivery has just arrived with no issues. I bank with Halifax though and downdector says that there are no problems with them.

WeAllHaveWings · 19/07/2024 09:54

Our work has a few users affected. I have suggested powering off laptops to protect them and all starting the weekend early, but they were not keen!

EBearhug · 19/07/2024 09:54

It would be entirely normal for me to think, " must top up with petrol Friday after work before I travel away for the weekend." It's also the start of the school hols for many.

And I ran out of milk this morning.

Well I buy all my essentials in my once a week big shop, some I don’t get your point.

RoseDog · 19/07/2024 09:57

Thanks @Dontcallmescarface fingers crossed it will be fine!

PassingStranger · 19/07/2024 09:57

Why does asking if the supermarkets are open have to descend into chaos. It's crazy.

EBearhug · 19/07/2024 09:58

It should be a good thing longer term, as it will get organisations reviewing their contingency plans, single points of failure, etc.

Let us never forget the wise words of the Mumsnet user in March 2020 who was absolutely convinced that buying milk was not an essential.

You can always use a little bit of water on your cereal, or a small cube of soft cheese in your tea (paraphrased).

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/07/2024 09:58

we are ok this end but got no emails from clients this morning which makes me think that they are all down.

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 09:59

All working here. Even the train wifi worked this morning. Debit card transactions ok. The only dodgy thing was phone signal on O2/Giff Gaff.

Essentials are the absolute basics you need, I highly doubt the vast majority of people on here can’t survive a couple of days of their weekly shop was delayed. Ergo, if someone can’t do their weekly shop today and have to go, shock, tomorrow they’ll be fine.

bananacreampie · 19/07/2024 10:01

brunettemic · 19/07/2024 09:46

honestly, why do people need to go and buy essentials? There’s an issue that is likely to be sorted pretty soon, I highly doubt anyone is going to run out of anything in that time.
This is why we end up people fighting over toilet roll in a supermarket 🙄

Crazy stuff, like needing to feed their children. Some people live completely hand to mouth and may have no food in the house.

You are really showing your privilege here.

Remember that the whole world is affected by this. Please consider that this affects not only first world countries, but also those rife in poverty. Many people are paid weekly on a Friday, and literally live week to week. On Friday they will be able to eat a proper meal which they perhaps haven't been able to for a day or so.

It is not always just a case of topping up and stockpiling.

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 10:02

Ridiculous that one security company can affect so much.

I don't believe it - I think these and other recent issues are major orchestrated cyber attacks from China and Russia.

No they aren't, don't be stupid. The essentials in this context are the core parts of the weekly food consumption - things like milk, tea, coffee, bread, yoghurt, sandwich fillers, butter, fruit juice etc. None of which are 'absolute basics', especially in isolation. They're just the things that people build their weekly diet around.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/07/2024 10:03

Someone called Mark Lloyd high up in IT has been quoted in the Guardian referring to a "rogue" update or words to that effect. Given the importance of language and PR in situations like this, I think clarification of "rogue" from his perspective is required.....

Itisjustmyopinion · 19/07/2024 10:04

The rush on toilet paper is going to start again isn’t it…..

Are supermarkets ok?

I've just been to Lidl and had trouble paying but it did eventually go through.

KeepinOn · 19/07/2024 10:08

I used to work for a cybersecurity company, CrowdStrike's competitor in fact. I wonder if they used AI to help them write or check the code for the update and didn't catch a flaw.

I'm also wondering how many bad actors are working to take advantage of this downage. CrowdStrike is f*cked as a company.

Currently on holiday. Looking at contents of almost empty fridge and contemplating muesli with water for dinner, and sharing a kit kat for dinner, if we're unable to use Apple Pay in the one local shop today

At home, with a reasonably well stocked freezer, we'd be fine for several days

And I suppose industrial espionage is a "thing".....
