Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

And I suppose industrial espionage is a "thing".....

Of course it is. But Occam's razor and all that - poorly checked, rushed code for updates/patches is more likely.

In Gail's and EVERYTHING IS FREE!

Is that because they don't take cash?

I've got a hair appointment this afternoon so have been making sure I can get enough cash together.

Interestingly although I couldn't pay for my loaf of bread with a card this morning, I was able to use a cashpoint.

honestly, why do people need to go and buy essentials? There’s an issue that is likely to be sorted pretty soon, I highly doubt anyone is going to run out of anything in that time.
This is why we end up people fighting over toilet roll in a supermarket 🙄

I didn't know there was a problem but was going to the supermarket after dropping GS off at work. If I hadn't we would have had no milk, no eggs, no bread (GS has joined the gym and is eating me out of house and home, he's had 18 eggs in the last week) and I couldn't have done any washing as I'd used the last of the washing powder when I put a wash on at 7 am. Lots of washing here with a gym mad GS and disabled husband.

So yes I wouldn't have had anything for DHs breakfast when he got up as I'd had breakfast early with GS and there was nothing left.

I work in a law firm and our systems are down. In a bit of a panic about some deadlines I have today.

Could this be a cyber attack? That's a dcary thought.

It is a commercial antivirus update with a bug in it - it should have been caught before release, but unlikely to be deliberate terrorism.

Hanlon's razor is the one about don't attribute things to malice if they can be attributed to stupidity.

Many in IT are aware "it could have been me."

I think a bit of cash kept in a jar is a good idea just to get some food or fuel.

I always keep £10 in my purse and another £10 on the back of my phone. And £10 in the car. So I've got an emergency stash. Not that £10 worth of fuel would get me far, but it might be enough.

I meant to use in the way of 'the simplest answer is the likeliest' but I agree with that attribution also.

StrangerOnThePlane · 19/07/2024 10:18

Bit of luck you don't need a GP appointment,

I wouldn't notice any difference, you can never get an appointment here anyway. 😅

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

Lol, and is that how you pay utilities?

🙂. I use direct debit and am happy to use online banking, contactless etc, it makes life easier, of course. But I don't assume. We make sure we have cash readily to hand in case we need it. Enough to pay for a tank of fuel and a large shop.

Are supermarkets ok?

Mine isn't! Cards are declining and member offers aren't working. Glad I'm not in till this evening when hopefully it'll be sorted!

Summermightbegreat · 19/07/2024 10:21

Well the important thing is we've all managed to get on Mumsnet.

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 10:23

brunettemic · 19/07/2024 10:00

Essentials are the absolute basics you need, I highly doubt the vast majority of people on here can’t survive a couple of days of their weekly shop was delayed. Ergo, if someone can’t do their weekly shop today and have to go, shock, tomorrow they’ll be fine.

So what are you meant to do to feed your family of 5 for the next 24 hours?

It’s my shopping day today, I have no bread milk, dog food or anything for dinner, unless pasta on its own with one carrot counts. I’ve also got enough petrol to get me to the supermarket but not back.

If all card systems were down and I didn’t have cash I’d be stuffed.

But I keep cash at home, so I’m not stuffed, because supermarkets accept cash still.

This is why we need to refuse a cashless society. Who cares if Starbucks refuse cash, you don’t need Starbucks. But if supermarkets start refusing cash we are heading in a bad direction.

bowlingalleyblues · 19/07/2024 10:25

GP - all systems down, can’t make appointments or access notes. Supermarket was business as usual

Noone needs to eat 18 eggs in a week. It’s insane. But if he insists surely he should buy and pay for them himself. And make sure he doesn’t eat everything so that everyone else have to go without or buy more.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/07/2024 10:27

My partner is stuck at Schipol en route home from working in Saudi. He was due to get home (like through the door) about 11am, now looking like this evening, although some flights are going now.

Where I live we are expected to have food and water at home for a week. It’s common sense.

Comefromaway · 19/07/2024 10:28

I just messaged student ds as he is travelling to another city this afternoon. He tells me he always keeps £40 emergency cash hidden in is backpack. Sensible boy.

That's really bad. I don't think internal NHS systems should be connected to the internet.

Fingers crossed.

Despite some of the headlines It looks like a problem that so far at least has only hit certain airlines and/or certain airports.

Many of the flights by the main airlines out of places like Heathrow and Gatwick seem to have been continuing to operate fairly normally so far.

That might be normal for remote areas like the highlands & islands, but it’s not normal for the vast majority or people. People living in poverty can’t afford to have a weeks worth of food in their house.

ll09sm · 19/07/2024 10:32

Suspect lots of people ‘won’t be able to work today’ and start their weekend early.

You don’t have to buy it all at once. I am just saying that our government have told us to do this, it’s expected of us to be able to contribute to society, whereas you seem to laugh about it or find excuses.

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/07/2024 10:33

It’s nothing to do with Microsoft is it? 😵‍💫.

Someone at Crowdstrike made a mistake in their code AFAIK.
