Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Are supermarkets ok?

I'm awaiting an Asda delivery and downdector is telling me Asda has issues and my bank Nationwide, I know my order has been picked, I had that email early this morning but doubt it will get delivered, I'll keep you posted!

Gingerdancedbackwards · 19/07/2024 09:36

Omg it's 1999 all over again

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 09:37

Good reminder of why we should keep some cash and why we need to prevent a cashless society

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

Createausername1970 · 19/07/2024 09:33

In our gun cabinet.

Lol, and is that how you pay utilities?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/07/2024 09:38

Can’t do anything at work

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 09:38

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

You know you can pay cash for most utilities at the post office right?

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

I would make no difference if cash points go down

TheYoungestSibling · 19/07/2024 09:40

For those who pay in cash, how often do you get cash out and by what method(s)? How is your bank account kept tallied by the bank?

How is your income paid to you?

You might get through an otherwise difficult day but you aren't immune.

Yes, is that what you do? Can you pay mortgage there too?

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:38

It would if you’ve kept some cash at home.

If all card systems go down but you’ve got £100 in a jar at home at least you can go buy groceries for the next week, or put a tank of fuel in your car.

Obviously longer outages over multiple days you can’t realistically be prepared for.

Haveyougotallnight · 19/07/2024 09:42

I think a bit of cash kept in a jar is a good idea just to get some food or fuel.

brunettemic · 19/07/2024 09:42

Haveyougotallnight · 19/07/2024 09:16

Bit of luck you don't need a GP appointment, to be catching a flight etc then ....I'm alright Jack...

The question was are people worried, the post you’re replying to answered the question. What’s the problem?

OrwellianTimes · 19/07/2024 09:43

Allfur · 19/07/2024 09:41

Yes, is that what you do? Can you pay mortgage there too?

Of course I don’t, it’s all direct debits. If globally all finance systems go down nothings getting paid is it? The companies won’t be able to take action against you for late payments.

But if you’ve got a couple hundred in cash you can buy food and essentials.

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 19/07/2024 09:43

I used Apple Pay in Asda at about 9am, no problem. Tried to use it in Costa about 30 minutes later, and it wouldn’t work. My debit card (linked to the same account) worked first time though. Both transactions are showing on my banking app.

I work at Amazon and everything is down.

Amazon works fine where I am.

It's possible. At the moment it seems like someone fucked up an update but who knows.

Certainly cyber attacks are an ongoing huge threat given the world's total reliance on technology but also there's no room for incompetence in writing new software and all that shit when the consequences of messing up are potentially bloody awful.

Someone is clearly having a really bad day at work. Imagine causing a worldwide internet outage.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/07/2024 09:45

Could a dodgy code update be a cyberattack from the inside though? Just musing.....

brunettemic · 19/07/2024 09:46

honestly, why do people need to go and buy essentials? There’s an issue that is likely to be sorted pretty soon, I highly doubt anyone is going to run out of anything in that time.
This is why we end up people fighting over toilet roll in a supermarket 🙄

Are supermarkets ok?

I wonder is this why, when I went to two big supermarkets yesterday (here in Ireland) they had signs everywhere they could only take cash.
Just going to read up about the outage now so i could be wrong(a lot of the time I am 😂)

“Mike! You’ve grounded all the planes in the USA, cut out financial systems, stopped Sky from broadcasting, and messed up GP systems!”

And yet, companies won't spend what's necessary. Most software in existence is shite.
Also no standards whatsoever... Given the importance of our profession we should really have a recognised professional body like chartered accountants and lawyers but no, people don't want barriers to entry cos they make lots of money encouraging people to 'break into tech'. But they claim it's to not stifle opportunity.

Opportunity for people isn't the main aim here it's to prevent incidents like this. And worse.

Rant over.

Heidi1976 · 19/07/2024 09:33

It wasn't a cyber attack, it was a dodgy code update at Crowdstrike. Someone is losing their job after this!

Yes, there's a lot of talk about that in my tech job today.

magicmole · 19/07/2024 09:49

Heidi1976 · 19/07/2024 09:33

Quite possibly a few people! Someone from Crowdstrike has highlighted a workaround that IT teams can use for now but it won't work for everyone and as always when there's a large outage there can be knock-on effects even when the initial problem is fixed.

And of course there's the irony that the issue seems to have been caused by a security company...

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/07/2024 09:50

I'm not worried, and I think we have a long way to go until it's 'chaos out there', at least generally. Of course it must be immensely frustrating if you're trying to catch a flight, and one of the local train companies isn't able to sell tickets via machines, but these are relatively minor issues in the short term.

Because maybe Friday is their shopping day?

Because maybe they need to put a tank of petrol in the car to get to work or go see an elderly relative or whatever?
