Why would anyone do this?!?!?

5ft 2in banker settles £1m case against her leg-lengthening surgeon

Elaine Foo, (pictured with her legal team), sued her leg surgeon Dr Jean-Marc Guichet (pictured inset) over his alleged botched operation. She worked in London for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

By 'anyone" do you mean the patient or the doctor?

It's pretty obvious why. I don't think it's worth it, but I can understand what goes into people's mind.

I understand less why healthy women have breast implants and boob jobs, but if they make them happy, why not.

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 13:52

Both the patient and the doctor! 5 foot 2 isn't small for a woman anyway

OP posts:
BIWI · 17/07/2024 13:53

5ft 2in is shorter than average. The average height for women is 5ft 4in.

Could be body dysmorphia and it said in the article that she was being bullied.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 17/07/2024 13:55

Why does anyone have cosmetic surgery ? Wanting to be taller is more understandable than some of the other procedures out there.

Primefungus · 17/07/2024 13:59

I'm 5 ft 2 and it's a real pain having to take trousers up all the time. Maybe that's why?!

Just buy the short leg?

are you on a wind up 🙄

Helloworld56 · 17/07/2024 14:02

I'm 5'0"" and getting any clothes to fit is a nightmare. Petite sizes are just not petite enough.
I wouldn't have surgery to make me taller (is that even a thing in the UK?) but I can understand why some people would.

It is. It’s shorter than average.

amoreoamicizia · 17/07/2024 14:05

I can understand that, @Helloworld56 . I'm size 8 but 5'7 and a lot of things swamp me unless I go for brands known to be small, so I can imagine them being massive on shorter women.

No I'm 5 foot 3 and buy short leg jeans.
It's drastic to have that operation and look what's happened to her because of it

masomenos · 17/07/2024 14:08

Leg lengthening surgery is definitely a thing, especially among wealthy, short young men in pressure cooker environments. Height and athletic ability are very much vaunted attributes in some worlds.

NasiDagang · 17/07/2024 14:11

I'm 5'1 but size 8 and wear kids clothes at the moment because everything looks like a tent on me. It's difficult finding properly fitted clothes.

Well I'm 5 ft 8 and I think5 ft 2 is quite small.

My daughter is 5ft 2 and short legged jeans work for her.

They don’t work for a colleague who is the same height as it’s about proportions.

My adult daughter gets really fed up about people commenting on her height and how small she is, how young she looks cause she is short and so on. Even when she is working in a Professional setting

Barely a week goes by that someone doesn’t verbalise to her that they are surprised she is good at her job as she looks so young and small.

I can’t imagine dd would get this operation, but I can certainly understand the frustration, which then turns into feeling like you need to do something

veritusvariety · 17/07/2024 14:18

I thinks it's a shame society seems to set value by aesthetics, rather than celebrating we're all brilliantly unique.

veritusvariety · 17/07/2024 14:19

That said, being short makes life much harder given everything is designed for average male height...cars, work surfaces, I could go on

It's not unusually small though is it

OP posts:
Katiesaidthat · 17/07/2024 14:23

She would have to care very much about her height, that kind of surgery is excruciatingly painful. So painful that I would think someone 5.2 who attempted it, really needed a psychiatrist, not a surgeon.

cupcaske123 · 17/07/2024 14:24

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:21

It's not. I think the average height of a woman in the UK is 5,3.

Gingerdancedbackwards · 17/07/2024 14:25

BIWI · 17/07/2024 13:53

5ft 2in is shorter than average. The average height for women is 5ft 4in.

I am 5' 1", so another inch would be fabulous. Another 5 inches would be amazing!
But sometimes, you count your other blessings!

Cattenberg · 17/07/2024 14:26

Harvard graduate Elaine Foo, 49, had always been 'self conscious about her height' and decided to go under the knife after 'experiencing bullying' whilst working on Bank of America Merrill Lynch's trading floor in London, the High Court heard.

This is the real problem that needs solving. 5ft 2 is a perfectly normal height, especially for a woman of South East Asian descent.

Sharptonguedwoman · 17/07/2024 14:27

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:21

Not sufficient to warrant surgery, I would say.

MeouwCat · 17/07/2024 14:28

Just as an aside, want there a psch who used to authorise leg amputations for people who believed they were amputees trapped in a healthy body?
