Why would anyone do this?!?!?

5ft 2in banker settles £1m case against her leg-lengthening surgeon

Elaine Foo, (pictured with her legal team), sued her leg surgeon Dr Jean-Marc Guichet (pictured inset) over his alleged botched operation. She worked in London for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

I'm 5'2" and I'd have my legs lengthened
a) if I could afford it
b) if I was certain this kind of thing couldn't happen
c) it wasn't painful - I've heard it can be very painful.

Being short really sucks.

BigBarm · 17/07/2024 17:09

I’m just under 5ft 2” and whilst I would love to be taller, I would never consider this.
People do comment, but not what I would call bullying. I have a ‘normal’ name for my generation (eg Jo, Clare, Jane), so not unusual to find another one in a workplace or social group… to distinguish between the two of us I’ve always been called eg “Little Jo”… but then the other woman is often called “Big Jo”, so I think I have the better deal! Especially as poor “Big Jo” is usually not that big.

I have one of those small fold up stools to reach cupboards at home. Or use DH who is tall.

Petite clothing is often rubbish though - eg M&S recently altered their ‘short’ trousers/jeans so these are now too long and the ‘extra short’ are rarely available.

MaturingCheeseball · 17/07/2024 17:09

I have never ever been bullied about my height. I’ve never even heard it remarked on about others of similar stature. And certainly not about women. For very short men - yes, I understand. I saw a thing online, “What do you call a man under 5’10”? A friend!” Now that is cruel - but it seems acceptable to discriminate and sneer at short men.

But a woman of 5’2”? It’s not really worthy of all that angst and leg-lengthening.

Also, as pp mentioned, won’t people look silly with long legs and non-matching arms and body?!

Runsyd · 17/07/2024 17:11

5 foot 1 here and never had a problem with it. If she were a bloke I could understand it, but as a woman, wtaf was she thinking???

TeabySea · 17/07/2024 17:11

BIWI · 17/07/2024 13:53

5ft 2in is shorter than average. The average height for women is 5ft 4in.

5ft 2in is taller than me!

Knitgoodwoman · 17/07/2024 16:15

I'm 5' 1" and a size 6 so I'm a pretty small human!! I generally embrace it! My husband is 6' 2" and he doesn't see an issue with my height, I fit in any airline seat, I can get kids clothes, and honestly I don't think anyone gives a monkeys! If I do want to feel taller when I give talks at work, for example, I wear heels.

Yep, the kids' clothes thing is a real win.

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:21

It's not unusually small though is it

It's unusually small for someone who works in banking. I imagine the average height is at least 5'10."

And before anyone says it's stupid, of course it is. It's also something you'll get judged on even subconsciously.

I work in tech and they decided "stand ups" (stand up meetings) were a good idea. When you're 5 foot 2 it basically means being fully surrounded by tall men (or even just average height men) standing and staring at their backs while trying to listen to a meeting and not being able to see anything of what's going on. Good luck taking part or looking at a whiteboard. No chance of standing at the front because there's always someone pushing in front to look keen.

Epicaricacy · 17/07/2024 14:02

are you on a wind up 🙄

My first thought was - just buy the short length. I’m 5’2” and haven’t needed to shorten trousers for years!

Soontobe60 · 17/07/2024 17:16

Wexone · 17/07/2024 16:51

NOT ALWAYS AVALIABLE

Next time I cant get a pair of short length jeans I’ll just book in for a leg lengthening procedure should I?

bruffin · 17/07/2024 17:18

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:21

No Im 5'2 and it was just under normal height growing up and it really doesnt bother me and nobody has ever bullied me about my height.
My sister is 4'10 and that is short but not a problem really for her.

User14March · 17/07/2024 17:21

It hasn’t held Kylie & Danni Minogue up & back!

AIstolemylunch · 17/07/2024 17:23

I'm 5ft and work in IT and have worked in finacial services. I guarantee that the reason that this woman was bullied and not popular was not due to her height.

it is a pain in the arse for clothes though. I get M&S short length trousers which fit fine but I have to buy short or 3/4 length sleeves or the arms are way too long.

Aslo a PITA at concerts. Not worth that though imo.

No you have to get them altered which the original quote said is a pain to get done and adds extra expense

BobbyBiscuits · 17/07/2024 17:32

The technique he uses sounds utterly gruesome.
I've got a massive metal plate and screws in my femur. I've lost an inch in height and one leg is an inch shorter than the other?! This was ortho trauma accident.
And it hurts every day 2 years later.
So I would never dream of having elective surgery like that on my healthy non broken bones?!

Wexone · 17/07/2024 17:33

Butchyrestingface · 17/07/2024 16:54

SO GET YOUR LEGS BROKEN AND LENGTHENED IN A TOTES MEDIEVAL PROCEDURE IS THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION.

I didn't say to have the operation did i ? i was replying back to the person who said buy the short version of the leg to the poster who wrote is a pain to always get legs altered!!!!

TheGander · 17/07/2024 17:34

This surgery was big business in China until the government banned it, too many cowboy surgeons and botched operations. It’s about projecting success and a higher socio economic status. Wealthy Chinese go abroad for it now. Places like this https://wannabetaller.com/limb-lengthening-surgery-in-china/

I just saw a post where someone was SHOUTING and thought HUZZAH! A KINDRED SPIRIT.

I don't think it's my height holding me back from being a catwalk model... 😂

I’m in the same boat 😂

I’m 5ft 2 and I have had ‘you’re so small’ comments thrown at me my entire adult life. I was this small when I was 12, then I stopped growing (up, I grew in other directions). I’m the size of a 12 year old girl.

Cerealkiller4U · 17/07/2024 17:57

I work with endocrine.

we have to deal with growth hormone and this process should be banned

its incredibly dangerous surgery and should t be performed.

alittleprivacy · 17/07/2024 17:58

SBHon · 17/07/2024 14:04

It is. It’s shorter than average.

Do you know what average means. Some people are going to be shorter. An inch or two shorter than average is very much in the range of normal.

MsNorburry · 17/07/2024 17:59

c\n you explain, do peopole have ''human growth hormone'' injections after this procedure. Is that a cancer risk?

Cerealkiller4U · 17/07/2024 18:00

My child was only going to make 4’11

they still wouldn’t of done anything about her height. Said it was perfectly acceptable to be that height and I agree

Benjilassi · 17/07/2024 18:00

Is anyone doing anything about this? I can't imagine attending meetings w/o being able to see or contribute and not being able to speak up about it.
