Why would anyone do this?!?!?

5ft 2in banker settles £1m case against her leg-lengthening surgeon

Elaine Foo, (pictured with her legal team), sued her leg surgeon Dr Jean-Marc Guichet (pictured inset) over his alleged botched operation. She worked in London for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

I’m with you OP. Wouldn’t get anything cosmetic done to myself. Medical treatment only.

But judging how popular cosmetic surgery, aesthetics etc are, I am just one person of my mindset.

Feelsodrained · 17/07/2024 14:31

A bit dumb saying you don’t understand why she had it. Why does anyone have a boob job, facelift, veneers, fillers, Brazilian butt lift? The list is endless. People get it done because they want to look different to how they currently look. Isn’t that obvious? Most of the operations are done on people who look perfectly fine without them but they still want them.

Cluborange666 · 17/07/2024 14:40

I’m 5’1. There are a lot of things I’d change about myself but I’ve never worried about my height. Hasn’t put men off or affected my life experiences. I just need to use Bacofoil to flick things down off the top shelf in the supermarket.

kittensinthekitchen · 17/07/2024 14:41

No words for those - supposed adults - who 'bullied' her into being so unhappy she embarked on this traumatic surgery?

Well, as long as you think she was fine, what a shame she didn't come seeking your opinion beforehand.

Oblomov24 · 17/07/2024 14:43

I'm really small, and shrinking! But his surgery looks questionable.

Deb13b · 17/07/2024 14:43

When I was a teenager many years ago I wanted it. I'm only 5ft tall. Sometimes short sizes are still too long ! Now, at 52, I'm pleased I didn't have the chance to get it ! Though I am worried about when I start shrinking with age....

CactusMactus · 17/07/2024 14:43

I'm 5.1" and don't really think of myself as short!

Only real problem is getting stuff out of the top cupboard - but that's why I have a 6.3" partner!

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/07/2024 14:45

Im 5ft 2”, nobody has ever said anything to me about being short. Literally never. I’m amazed some people get weekly comments. I have a professional job and nobody has ever expressed surprise at my competence due to my job.

I don’t even particularly find the clothes thing a pain. I tend to wear dresses, if I get trousers then try for petite length but if that’s not possible I hand sew them up. It’s a 20 min job max and if’s not hard. Only thing I can’t do is jeans so I’d get them done for me.

leg lengthen surgery sounds risky. Even if it goes ok surely the risk of arthritis in later life is there.

Benjilassi · 17/07/2024 14:47

The article does say she "frequently declined' to follow her surgeon's advice and had neglected her rehabilitation and physiotherapy."

pilo7 · 17/07/2024 14:48

Being 5ft 2 (which I am) isn't a problem. The problem is everything else!

It's really tedious having to get everything tailored. The PP who said 'just buy short leg length' – umm, ok, sure, if I only want to shop at Marks & Spencer?! The vast majority of clothes don't come in our lengths, and the proportions are often wrong anyway.

That said, I'd never in a million years opt for such insanely risky (and painful, and expensive) surgery. Awful that she was bullied so badly – I guess that's the culture in banks like Merril Lynch...

BIWI · 17/07/2024 14:49

I'm another 5ft 2er! One thing I discovered about petite clothes is that it's not all about the height - the fit depends if you're short in the leg, or the body - or sometimes even in the arms.

So for me, petite trousers are usually too short, and I can get by with standard 'short' or even 'regular' lengths. But I'm shorter in the body, so jumpers/blouses in a petite range (where they're available) work better for me.

weebarra · 17/07/2024 14:50

I'm 4ft 10 and was offered this surgery when I was younger. I didn't have it because the idea of being eg in a wheelchair and immobile for a period of time seemed a lot to go through to be a little bit taller.
There's a lot more to the effects of being tiny that 'just take the legs up' so I completely understand her motivation.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 17/07/2024 14:50

Well, she practically skipped out of that courtroom!

I'm puzzled by this too - I just asked my partner, who is 5' 1", if she's suffered comments or bullying and she replied "Never".

Didn't affect her career progression either - she became a headteacher.

Or a baguette. Baguette are a useful tool!

MsNorburry · 17/07/2024 14:51

Wow, I'm only 5'1" so although I can understand wanting to be a bit taller, I'd never have risked this. Bones can be weaker in old age anyway, why risk making yourself WEAKER although, clearly, she can walk again now. Her legs must be the same length again now.

Not the point, but if it had worked, she'd have been v out of proportion.

ThirtyAll · 17/07/2024 14:56

I didn’t know there was such an operation.

MsNorburry · 17/07/2024 14:56

No scars on her legs either. Weird, she skips out of court looking mobile, normal, no scars, no limp, and yet the surgeon has to pay her

godmum56 · 17/07/2024 14:56

MeouwCat · 17/07/2024 14:28

Just as an aside, want there a psch who used to authorise leg amputations for people who believed they were amputees trapped in a healthy body?

it was a storyline in Law and Order Special Victims Unit.

godmum56 · 17/07/2024 14:59

ThirtyAll · 17/07/2024 14:56

I didn’t know there was such an operation.

its been used for years on children who are born with a huge difference in leg length, also sometimes on folk who have leg shortening post trauma. Cosmetically of course if you have got the money........

Benjilassi · 17/07/2024 14:59

I can see dark patches on the outside of each leg - just above the knee. It's hard to tell whether they are scars or not.

I’m a pro at both using another item to flick stuff off top shelves and also shelf climbing in supermarkets. I recently discovered in Tesco for the bottles of pop on the top shelf there’s a hidden handle thing and if the bottles are at the back then pulling the handle moves them all forward.

shockthemonkey · 17/07/2024 15:02

She also fiddled with the key on one leg, reportedly. It is hard to believe that a clever person would do this, no matter how keen they may have been to accelerate the process.

If she did tamper with the key, then surely that is the reason she ended up with legs of different lengths?

Plus, all has now seemingly been corrected.

Hmmm🤔

MsLavender · 17/07/2024 15:03

I'm 5'2 and a half and the only person who ever commented on my height was an ex who was 6'6 😂

Being shorter can be annoying but not to the point that I would ever go through extreme surgery like that.

QuickMember · 17/07/2024 15:06

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:06

No I'm 5 foot 3 and buy short leg jeans.
It's drastic to have that operation and look what's happened to her because of it

Exactly. I’m around 5ft 1 and as an Indian woman that’s an average height. I’ve had comments in England but so what? Everyone gets rubbish about their appearance and this woman in the article has a gorgeous face in my opinion. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was bullied by envious colleagues for that rather than height.

In terms of clothes, you tend to find a way to manage!
