Why would anyone do this?!?!?

5ft 2in banker settles £1m case against her leg-lengthening surgeon

Elaine Foo, (pictured with her legal team), sued her leg surgeon Dr Jean-Marc Guichet (pictured inset) over his alleged botched operation. She worked in London for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

What a culture we live in, chop bits off, stitch or stick bits on, inject stuff in. No wonder so many people aren't comfortable in their skin.

It’s truly baffling. I do not understand.

Much healthier (and cheaper, and less painful) to learn to accept the body we were born into.

What kind of jobs? Like police officer?
I would never have considered my short-arsed-ness might hold me back professionally!

Spot on!

You can join the police if you’re short- there’s no minimum height to join the police in the UK! But you can’t be cabin crew on many airlines. Also probably not a catwalk model. Not sure if there are any other jobs short people can’t do.

I'm 5 ft 2 and it's a real pain having to take trousers up all the time. Maybe that's why?!

The recovery for this surgery is brutal even if it goes well. A much bigger "pain" than any alteration. You'll be bedridden and peeing in a pan for a while.

MsNorburry · 17/07/2024 15:20

5'8 deviates from the norm more than 5'2

But you'd be unlikely to be described as "a bit tall".

Did you ever think about that?!

I’m also 5’8” it’s not that tall nowadays for a woman.

WhatsUpNowThen · 17/07/2024 16:09

Or a baguette. Baguette are a useful tool!

I'm 5' 1" and I keep a special spatula in the kitchen.
Nobody touches my spatula.

Benjilassi · 17/07/2024 16:12

But you can’t be cabin crew on many airlines.

That's a safety thing I think. Got to be able to reach stuff.

amoreoamicizia · 17/07/2024 16:13

I often see the 5'2 figure quoted as average height but I'm sure it's well out of date these days. I'm 5'7 and feel average or a smidgen taller than average, young women in particular are usually my height or close. I certainly don't walk around feeling taller than most women.

voiceofastar · 17/07/2024 15:55

Grab something long, like a bumper packet of custard creams, to shuffle it off the shelf.

Done that and the clambering. I wouldn't reach into the bottom of a freezer in Iceland though in case I topple in head first and my little legs are waggling in the air 😂.

Knitgoodwoman · 17/07/2024 16:15

I'm 5' 1" and a size 6 so I'm a pretty small human!! I generally embrace it! My husband is 6' 2" and he doesn't see an issue with my height, I fit in any airline seat, I can get kids clothes, and honestly I don't think anyone gives a monkeys! If I do want to feel taller when I give talks at work, for example, I wear heels.

PasteldeNata78 · 17/07/2024 16:15

Also @SonicTheHodgeheg her LinkedIn profile is easy to find. Just Google her name and profession

I love my height btw. I look great in heels.

Knitgoodwoman · 17/07/2024 16:17

Also, being short doesn't preclude you from many jobs these days, I was in the armed forces and most jobs within the military were available to me. There were a few exceptions like pilot, as I was too short for the seat!! But most other things were open for me.

Beekeepingmum · 17/07/2024 16:19

If she grow by 4inches but one leg was 6 inches, it must mean that the lengthening operation on one leg actually shorted it by 2 inches. The is quite poor performance from the surgeon. It does sound like horrific surgery through.

Halfheadhighlights · 17/07/2024 16:21

It’s Concerning that the bullying at Merrill Lynch forced her into that decision. Sounds like a very toxic work environment. Maybe someone should look into this

the surgery sounds very drastic, hollowing out the bone marrow in the biggest bone in the body for cosmetic reasons is going to come with a high risk factor.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 17/07/2024 16:24

Why would anyone do this?!?!?

Because bullying messes with your head and makes people vulnerable to trying stupid solutions?

Her height didn't stop her from doing her job and doing it well. There may be lots of good reasons for having surgery but it's a self-destructive response to bullying.

Deebee90 · 17/07/2024 16:25

What an absolutely fragile woman. Being 5’2 isn’t small at all and I doubt she was bullied. She worked in a men’s industry so most likely they made digs. Fair play to her for suing though .

SwedishEdith · 17/07/2024 16:28

I'm not short but I'd love longer legs. But bloody hell, she had bone marrow scooped out to insert the rods. It reads like she tried to speed up the process as well. Imagine how painful the skin stretching must have been. One leg dangling because they were different heights. I'd be worried about future osteoporosis as well - or maybe her legs are stronger now?

Butchyrestingface · 17/07/2024 16:35

I'm 5 ft 2". Would love to be about 5ft 6". Not enough to have what I'd been led to think is a horrendously painful, risky and potentially disabling procedure, mind you.

She was already a height which was within normal limits. The mind boggles.

Yes, got to be able to comfortably reach the overhead lockers. Mind you there is also an upper height limit on most airlines (presumably due to comfort and practicalities) so at least airlines discriminate against very tall and very short people. (NB- I realise their ‘discrimination’ is totally legitimate!)

Dentalflossie · 17/07/2024 16:47

Tragic that she felt she had to do that. My daughter is that height and I used to remind her that she was in good company eg: Reese Witherspoon, Shakira, Kylie M, Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton and numerous skaters and gymnasts.

Wexone · 17/07/2024 16:51

Thunderandlightningisfrightening · 17/07/2024 14:01

Just buy the short leg?

NOT ALWAYS AVALIABLE

Butchyrestingface · 17/07/2024 16:54

Wexone · 17/07/2024 16:51

NOT ALWAYS AVALIABLE

SO GET YOUR LEGS BROKEN AND LENGTHENED IN A TOTES MEDIEVAL PROCEDURE IS THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION.

I don't think it's my height holding me back from being a catwalk model... 😂

I'd imagine it's an even bigger pain getting your legs lengthened 🤔
