Wearing a skimpy bikini around teenage son

Behappyandbehave · 09/07/2024 22:25

I'm late 40's and have recently lost alot of weight. I have treated myself to some new bikinis for an upcoming beach holiday and some are thong styles. I did originally buy the thong ones for when me and DH go away later in the year alone. But every holiday I go on abroad there is so many people younger and older than me showing all their bums! When I was a teen it was rare, but not anymore. Just not sure I'm brave enough or if it would be a massive no with adult/teen children! Wwyd?

Nope.
Even the most toned buttocks look faintly ridiculous.
They should be consigned to the annals of naff fashion!

Don't do it, to your son, or yourself.

It's not about looking good vs not looking good.

It's about the sexualisation of bodies. Thongs are an overtly sexual item of clothing.

It's fine to show skin, but thongs just highlight that naked bodies = sex. That's literally what they were designed for, and that's why they are not particularly suitable to wear on holiday in front of your teenage son.

Being nude in an appropriate, non-sexualised context would be better than wearing a thong.

Shouldn't we be trying to teach the next generation that bodies don't always have to be sexualised?

Why is a normal bikini brief not overtly sexual and a thong is?

Singersong · 10/07/2024 07:06

I'd love to know why so much of society has decided that you can only look good if you're virtually naked.

Behappyandbehave · 09/07/2024 22:38

I think I've made me decision 😂 but I do disagree that they look awful on everyone. Some people look great! I wouldn't describe my arse as perfect but I would say it's ok for a thong (just maybe not with the teens!) DH would love it. We are staying at a private rental in Sep so will save them for then!

Sounds like a good plan. Well done you for working hard to get into shape and for having confidence in your body. It really is a breath of fresh air to actually hear a woman talking positively about her body.

Skyrainlight · 10/07/2024 07:08

It's a big no from me.

Oh god, imagine being classless! The horror!

I'm 48, Madonna is old enough to be my mother.

You don't just wake up at 40 looking 80. Not that you can't wear a bikini at 80 either.

What dreadful misogynistic and ageist comments.

Tillhatedoesuspart · 10/07/2024 07:11

DoAClassicCamel · 10/07/2024 06:54

I’m not saying that at all. Have you never been unsure about an item of clothing and asked for someone else’s opinion? The OP wasn’t sure what her adult/teen children would think, so why not show them what you have bought and see what they say. So many people ask MN the question instead of asking the actual person. Personally if I liked it enough to have bought it I’d wear it.

Well, exactly, I agree, if you like it enough to buy it, then wear it. It's nothing to do with anyone else.

Thoughtful2355 · 10/07/2024 07:15

I wouldn't care about it being around my son I just hate them, I think they are gross and even when I see them on someone with a gorgeous body I hate them, I just don't want to imagine the string rubbing someone's asshole. I also don't want to see someone's ass.

Moonlitwalk · 10/07/2024 07:16

This is making me chuckle- I didnt realise that on the stroke of midnight on your 40th birthday you suddenly turn into the crypt keeper 😂

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 10/07/2024 07:17

Sorry OP its a firm no. My 13yo wouldn't bat an eyelid in the house, but out in public he'd just die of humiliation and probably refuse to be seen with me. That aside, they are very 1980's ( I'm older than you) and incredibly naff and try hard. Also cause thrush, in holiday conditions.

Icarus40 · 10/07/2024 07:20

I think it's less about what you look like and more about the message it gives off. To me a thong bikini says 'I feel confident and sexy '. I don't think any teen would want to be privy to that from their mum??

OneBadKitty · 10/07/2024 07:24

Thongs look horrible on everyone. I don't wish to see anybody's bum cheeks on full display on the beach or round the pool, even if they are young, pert and brown. It's just not nice.

Crumpleton · 10/07/2024 07:26

I've never seen the point in thong anything, well having said that I think some call flip flop type footwear thongs, but to me no one's arse crack needs flossing.

crostini · 10/07/2024 07:27

God people are so uptight on here.

It's the beach.... it's hot. You wear as little as possible to be comfortable. Full swimming costumes sticking to your wet stomach or bum is uncomfortable. The beach is the perfect place to wear a thong.

They are fine for whatever age. I like by the sea and the majority of people wear thong bikini from 20s to much, much older.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 10/07/2024 07:28

As a teenage girl I would have been mortified to see my mum prancing around in a thong 😂 Forget the fact he’s a boy, it’s a thong!! Leave it until it’s just you and DH.

Oops! I misread "annals" ! 😇😊

CrimpNStraighten · 10/07/2024 07:29

Well done on the weight loss.

I am sure you have a great bum. Do your teens really need to see it though?

Why not just ask them? I wouldn’t wear this but if I did I might chat to my teens. But we are very close and open about stuff.

OhshutupBeryl · 10/07/2024 07:30

Sondheimisademigod · 10/07/2024 06:46

Oh come off it. Nobody has a 'good body' after 40. Nature sees to that. Connective tissue and collegen are decreasing, few bits are tight.
Madonna still looks ridiculous, despite her 'toned' body.
People are not spouting bile; they are showing that they have class, whereas those who think it's ok for any middle-aged body to be on display in public, clearly are demonstrating they don't. Because class means you consider the effects of your actions on others. So thise who think they can do or say what they want, when they want, are entirely classless

What a crock of shit.

Loving the comments on thongs, so funny!

Peonies12 · 10/07/2024 07:31

Definitely a no from me. But I think it’s nice to keep some things private and special for your partner and not show everyone at the beach / hotel.

user675654 · 10/07/2024 07:33

I’m in holiday at the moment with my two teen sons 17 and 19. They both just looked confused and says they couldn’t care less. That said, at 50 I wouldn’t wear one anyway and the only people wearing them here are the early 20s Russians.

lovemycbf · 10/07/2024 07:43

Totally inappropriate around your son
Save the bikinis for holidays without your son as mine would literally die of embarrassment

Sondheimisademigod · 10/07/2024 07:44

OhshutupBeryl · 10/07/2024 07:30

What a crock of shit.

So erudite

CharlotteRumpling · 10/07/2024 07:46

I don't even think Hailey Bieber looks good in a thong, as posted upthread. I just don't like the look. It's very, very naff.
