To get a secret one off cleaner

elm26 · 09/07/2024 10:46

Husband is doing his annual 2 night camping trip with friends he's had since school.

My 1 year old is going to the farm Saturday with her Nanny & Gramps then having a sleepover.

So I've booked a one off deep clean of our home in secret, I'm going to take the dog for a 2 hour walk somewhere peaceful, come home to a clean home, open a bottle of wine in the evening, have a long hot bubble bath, order myself a Chinese and binge watch my favourite shows with chocolate that I don't have to share with anyone in my comfiest pjs and then have a sleep in on Sunday and I feel wonderful for planning this 😂

No guilt at all about not telling my DH about the cleaner, would any of you do the same?

This is the cleverest thing I have ever heard!

Nellieinthebarn · 09/07/2024 13:20

Sounds wonderful. I would do the same in a heartbeat. I once ordered a secret mini skip when my ExH went away for a weekend, got rid of all the crap he'd promised to deal with and never did. 100% worth it.

FinallyHere · 09/07/2024 13:53

Very glad to read your update that the 'secret' cleaner will be paid from joint funds.

I'd really encourage you (pl.) to outsource as much of your 'housework' as possible and really enjoy the time that it frees up while you still can. And to be upfront about doing so.

It's really in no one's interest to pretend we can be superwomen who earn a living and carry the mental load of running a household.

Enjoy your life.

Elliesmumma · 09/07/2024 13:59

I would do the same, never fess up and make a big deal about how amazing I am for doing all that cleaning whilst he’s away enjoying himself. I might angle for the following weekend off for my efforts too. But then I’m utterly shameless.

Merryoldgoat · 09/07/2024 14:00

I find this thread really upsetting.

Because my DH never goes anywhere for me to do this.

Enjoy @elm26

2 hours will be enough, it's a 2 bedroom flat and I clean it twice weekly anyway it's just my Saturday is usually a bigger clean where I wipe down skirting boards etc.

I don't know why I've kept it a secret to be honest! DH would probably laugh if I told him, I just feel guilty for spending on a cleaner when I could technically do it myself especially as I won't have my 1 year old hanging off me but I just think sometimes in life you need to have a harmless little secret that you can be smug about 😂

You wipe your skirting boards down every week?…..

Im clearly doing something wrong 🤣

Aligirlbear · 09/07/2024 14:24

Perfect plan ! Enjoy your chill out time

Passay · 09/07/2024 14:26

Don’t explain yourself op.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 09/07/2024 14:32

Instead of a secret you can refraim it as a surprise. He will appreciate a tidy home as much as you will and it will be nice for him to come home and find that you have achieved that without needing to do it all yourself.

staceyflack · 09/07/2024 14:48

Brilliant! Enjoy 🙈🙉🙊 xxx

elm26 · 09/07/2024 15:05

Blimmin ell wish I'd never shared my smugness!

A Disney dad?! Just because he takes her to the park or swimming on a Saturday doesn't mean he doesn't change her nappy, bathe her, feed her, put her to bed etc when he is here! Some of you lot would have men hung drawn and quartered imagining the worst of them all of the time!

OP posts:
elm26 · 09/07/2024 15:07

Also I am a bit of a clean freak and I always have been but I must stress that when I say I wipe down skirting boards every week I mean the dirty bits from the dog shaking mud or DD somehow flicking her dinner up the wall and onto them. I don't literally go around on my hands and knees the whole perimeter of the house each week and clean every inch of skirting boards lol.

Thanks guys for the funny and messages calling me a genius, I am pretty pleased with myself 😂

I was just thinking how nice your set up sounded

elm26 · 09/07/2024 15:09

Also also, my sister (desperate for a dog but doesn't have time for one of her own) text and has asked if her and her boyfriend can have our dog for the night (they quite often do this) as they're planning to head to the beach and our dog loves the water so I said absolutely 😂

And to the poster who suggested the car valet, fab idea as dsis will have the dog hammock, Dad will have the car seat and pram so the car will be empty. Oooh I am very excited 😂 it's the little things eh?!

🤣🤣🤣 I'm shameless too, I might even hire a chef instead of getting a takeaway. (In a fantasy world where I'm a multi millionaire).

I get it. My husband went to canada a couple of months ago for a week. Our house is clean but to me was feeling a little in need of some TLC. (new build but in the caribbean so doors open alot..fans ALWAYS on..collecting dust.) I kept on top of it (not hard. two people two dogs) but he was flying home here on the sunday, So on the saturday I hired a friends housekeeper (she actually lives in with them right across the street housekeeper/nanny/superhero.) I put my dogs in the car, and went to a remote beach, they ran their butts off and so did I . Then we rented a beach lounger and had a lunch delivered to my chair. My dogs enjoyed a lunch of fish and fresh vegetables with me, I had a pina colada then switched to water (one hour drive from home) stopped at the colomado (corner shop) on way home and bought a bottle pinot grigio and a big bag of lays. That was one of my fav days ever. Never told my husband, lol, my little pamper me day. Not that he would care, he would probably tell me to book her again.

Now this is the dream! You have one upped me here! I wish I was in the Caribbean! Some of the islands are my favourite places I've ever been. Sounds like a wonderful day you and the doggies had x

Personally I'd add an hour and have them do the ironing as well. Strip all the beds ahead of the visit.

We don't iron in this house shamefully 😂 T-shirts etc get hung up to dry at this time of year, babies clothes go on the airer. I have a tumble dryer for winter so get it straight out when finished and hang it so no creases. My DH works as a sparky so wears business logo T-shirts and workmen pocket trousers so no need to iron. Although, I own 2 pairs of linen trousers which I do run over to my mum (she lives opposite) so run an iron over them for me once or twice a month 😂 When baby is of school age of course I will be ironing his uniform because it's one of my biggest bug bears, seeing kids look scruffy for school but for now I can get away with not ironing 🤣

Tell him you've booked him a day and night in a travelodge and you've got a surprise for him. The surprise will be that you had a cleaner in 😂

Don't we all clean every day?

I don't.

I'm very impressed by you, OP, especially that you clean skirting boards once a week.

Enjoy your day (and your little secret).

I don't clean every day either, and cleaning skirting boards every week isn't something to be impressed by, it's a waste of a life.

If the OP cleans twice a week, how dirty can it be anyway? She could enjoy the weekend doing what she likes and just not clean.

No-one's going to notice either way as the place must be pretty spotless anyway, with all this cleaning going on.

elm26 · 09/07/2024 19:23

To all of those saying about having a regular cleaner, we are not exactly hard up but not well off either, we'd rather use any "spare" money for savings to be able to go on holiday each year with DD. Even if I spent £40 a week on a cleaner, minus a couple of weeks for Christmas etc it would be around £2k. I'd rather that went into our holiday pot/daughter's savings account.

@Bjorkdidit I'm sorry to hear that you think I'm wasting my life by wiping the odd bit of mud etc off of my skirting boards once a week.

Have you ever had a 1 year old and a dog? It gets pretty messy/grubby/hairy pretty quickly. It's not spotless.

I'm in the "genius" camp OP. Sounds like a wonderful weekend. And I totally get the secret thing, it's a little sneaky, no harm done secret. Your treat to yourself.

I think it was on Mumsnet a few years ago when I read that one women hated ironing and got an ironing lady but didn't tell her husband. The ironing got picked up in the morning and dropped off in the afternoon before her husband got home.
But because her husband knew how much she hated ironing he would treat her to a takeaway so she could put her feet up after she'd worked so hard.
Sometimes it really is the little things and a little sneakiness is part of the fun too.

Muffin101 · 09/07/2024 20:06

Oh you genius. I am now googling cleaning companies near me to do the same 😂 I also would not tell my (lovely, fantastic, perfect) DH and simply play it off like it was wonderful, fantastic me, don’t I just deserve to take it so easy😇
