Hullo good afternoon.

I'm a parent of an 18 year old lad.

He's going on a group holiday with 7 friends tomorrow to Ibiza.

We have a moms' group chat. Had it for many years as 5 of from primary joined the same secondary school together and we've socialised since as families and 3 other moms have joined over the years as their children palled up with our 5.

It appears that several of the moms are packing for their offspring for this trip.

I'm a smidge astounded at this, these are captured children who are mostly off to university soon. This doesn't seem to be helping to pack, it's actually packing for them. 🤨 a couple have mentioned its just easier that way, one child is swampy in bed with a hangover.

Where's the encouragement to independence?

YABU: it's fine for moms (or parents but in this case is definitely the female parents) to pack for 18 year Olds.

YANBU: a bit of guidance or nowt help at all is the way to go

Appreciate you're not the one needing stories of encouragement not to pack for them but...My mum helped me pack the first time I went on a trip. She told me to get everything I thought I'd need out on the bed and then helped me cull about 2/3rds of it and showed me how to roll it etc so it would all fit it in my case. I was 15. It was invaluable advice and still how I pack today (though these days I rarely have to cull!). If she'd packed it all for me I'd have a. Not had a clue what was in there and b. probably not got it all back in the suitcase the other side of the trip!

Captured? Swampy? What?

if they are mature enough to go to ibiza tgen they are old enough to pack although a bit of help is fine if they haven’t done it before.

We are going on hol tomorrow. I will tell DS 17 to put out what clothes he wants packing and to sort out his toiletries, tech etc. I will make a check as I pack the case (we share a big one for clothes) but he is usually pretty good.

Yes I'm going to guide. But not do it all.

How on earth are they going to manage the repack in a week if they've not been part of the packing process at all?

What’s with the ‘mom’ then when the rest of the thread sounds like you are in the UK? And why the weirdly embellished posting style?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 07/07/2024 18:30

Blimey. I've just been on holiday and my autistic 11 year did his own packing (from a list I made for him).

Apologies captured is a mistake, I thought I typed capable.

Swampy is what the children call lazing in bed after a hangover.

I understand the PP's AI comment a bit more now, apologies.

@MissingKitty "mom" is widely used in the UK.

Lots of people in the Midlands say and write "mom" 🤷‍♀️

Captured was an auto-correct from my phone. I think I must have typed "capable" badly and it corrected it and I didn't proof read.

My son was doing his own packing from about age 10 as he went to his dad's each week.

Now at age 20, he's been going abroad by himself and organising the whole thing! Including packing.

Sheffielders say "mom". Common in the Midlands too.

What’s with your questioning “mom” when you know what the poster means?

It still means mother.

Xmasbaby11 · 07/07/2024 18:36

It's too much to pack for an 18 yo, I agree. But it's someone else's parenting decision - stay out of it and be glad your DS is independent!

ShutterNutBosh · 07/07/2024 18:36

Yes my children have been packing (with guidance) since early teens.

Worst outcome was one went on holiday without socks. We just bought some more there.

Oh I'm not saying anything, just thought it was an unusual thing to do for 18 year Olds.

Sounds more reasonable now you’ve said captured was a typo. It’s not like I made up that it sounded oddly written, and I’m not the only one to have said it. Smidge astounded, captured, swampy, hullo, moms (never heard this before as an English thing but clearly it’s regional!). I believe it’s not AI after your replies obvs but it still sounded odd

Sosorryliver · 07/07/2024 18:38

Packing is an art form. I learnt to pack a suitcase from my guide handbook back in the day. It actually really helped in the long run as I swanned off round Europe with my 14kg backpack. So many people had these massive bags that were awful to carry.

I don’t think it does young people any favours to do things for them. Teach them how, then sink or swim. You learn a lot from your mistakes.

phoenixrosehere · 07/07/2024 18:35

Yes people know what the poster means but mum is the more common term in much of the U.K.

People were suggesting that the use of mom and the slightly odd posting style points to this being AI.

I didn’t say I didn’t no what it meant, I said it was an odd use as it’s an americanism. HTH. This has since been covered that it’s a regional thing to say mom rather than mum which I’ve not heard before.
