Just watching Chris Martin prancing around the stage at Glasto singing his pop music and can't help feeling annoyed that they started off as one thing and completely sold out to pop. AIBU to say that their parachutes album was and always will be the best.

Don't get me started on Ed Sheeran. I just do not get it.

I like many many genres of music and coldplay was definitely a band I enjoyed for the first two albums.
I guess I'm just ratty that they went so far into mainstream and started churning out stuff I dislike greatly. I also think that having them headline 5 times is a bit much.

I quite like Coldplay and look forward to watching it tomorrow on iPlayer, unfortunately I had a migraine, just recovering now so couldn't watch it yet. I have seen them a couple of times and they were good

I'm OK with liking uncool music, I like Take that as well as Coldplay....but who is cool? Or who do the cool people like? Will I have heard of them?

I actually think one generations cool is very unlikely to be that of the next generation, which is the way of rock and roll.

In terms of perpetual and everlasting cool, I can only really think of Bowie, the Clash and Kate Bush. (Waits to be told how wrong I am about them 😂)

Oh and poss Springsteen

Yes, this is pretty much my thoughts and DH and I rolled our eyes as are Coldplay and annual act? DH is a hip hop fan I’m more indie/rock stuff but I don’t get how nobody wants to play Glastonbury, the acts they have this year in particular are dire.

Music snobs are the worst. So you don't like it...we don't care. Stop trying to prove you're cooler than the rest of us.
Comes with a side order of 'festivals were great when I was young but everything's soooo shit now'.

Oh come off it they are though mainly because they are not for young people anymore unless loaded! Hardly cutting edge if you are paying £400 a ticket.

I actually do thing some people are cooler than others in terms of music and aesthetically -loads of examples of that. That doesn’t mean others aren’t better at things like science or Politics but I’m sure now you are going to tell me that this is subjective.

lundland · 30/06/2024 20:57

None of the acts I've watched this weekend are people I'd seek out particularly but I've loved watching them - there's a joy to it all I find infectious. Adult children have also watched along and we've enjoyed the variety and just had a lot of fun!

LizzieBennett73 · 30/06/2024 21:06

Coldplay aren't everyone's musical taste but they are absolute professionals on stage. They're reported to have grossed over $1 billion with their current tour, so clearly some find their music enjoyable. We saw them at Wembley last year in 34c heat and it didn't affect their performance at all.

H34th · 01/07/2024 09:59

Brought back memories of who I was all those years ago. I needed that. So happy I tuned in.

CM can sing, and very well too. He has amazing energy - hasn't stopped moving. Very humble, positive, engaging performer.

If he isn't a scientologist, I reckon he will be in the next couple of years. There's something oddly fake about him.
All the preaching about the environment then wasting resources on giving everyone a daft flashing bracelet.
I think the man has a God complex.

Yes, all those plastic wristbands. Single use plastic. What a waste and not the ethos of Coldplay. And all the poisonous lithium batteries powering them. I was really surprised to see that.

PassingStranger · 01/07/2024 16:06

There's video footage of CM at Glastonbury in 1999.
He said Coldplay are going to be big, watch out for us or words similar. How right he was?

Love what you wrote, I agree. I went to a FooFighters concert the other night and, I feel old saying it, but all Dave Grohl (who I love) did was scream at the top of his voice so that the words were incomprehensible and the music wasn't music at all but turned up so loud that it felt physically sickening and not a single note was identifiable. It was an overdone light show that I couldn't wait to see the end of.

By comparison, Coldplay produced just the best clearly audible, singalong, musical concert complete with lights and fireworks and flashing wristbands enhancing the whole thing. It was a long set which the band played like real musicians and sentiments for a better world, for one to one communication and the inclusion of other bands and a concert that was intended to entertain and reach out to every single person there.

I don't know why such hate and derision is always aimed at Coldplay but I suspect it's because they are reasonable, dare I say it nice, guys, good musicians who do their stuff and care about being human beings along with the people in front of them. I thought It was a stunning set.

You know what - I felt a little bit the same after the Foos in 2018. I wondered if it was because we had high-up seats as opposed to standing, but it was slightly incomprehensible and one of the guitars overpowered everything else.

Soukmyfalafel · 01/07/2024 16:09

I quite like their new stuff, also their old. I think if they carried on with the whining music they would not be that popular anymore.

emmsyg · 01/07/2024 16:28

I thought the set was great - I saw them at T in the Park several years ago and Fix You will forever remind me of an amazing night with my sister who has sadly now passed away. We were right down at the front and it was an unforgettable concert. I've also seen loads of bands live across festivals and concerts over the years, and they are right up there for me as one of my favourite live acts (and I'm usually a rock/indie fan).

You can enjoy whatever music you like, who cares what anyone else thinks? I also enjoyed watching Idles, James, Keane, Anne Marie etc across the weekend (on the telly sadly as I didn't get a ticket!)

They also encourage recycling of the wristbands as much as possible, lots of info on the website about how they are trying to offset their touring as much as possible: https://www.coldplay.com/emissions-update/

Tour Emissions Update 2024 | Coldplay

We’re happy to report that direct CO2 emissions from the first two years of this tour are 59% less than our previous stadium tour (2016-17).

They are made out of some sort of recycled material apparently, and are re-used - each time I've had one I had to put it in a box on the way out

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 01/07/2024 17:42

@Fizbosshoes ah - that's a bit better, but they must still have batteries.

When they played at the Sheoherds Bush Empire it was a pre condition that all single use plastic was removed from the bars. I do think you have a point about the necessity of the wristbands though.

I got that with Paul Heaton!
