Just watching Chris Martin prancing around the stage at Glasto singing his pop music and can't help feeling annoyed that they started off as one thing and completely sold out to pop. AIBU to say that their parachutes album was and always will be the best.

I think with indie pop if that's what they started out as. You rarely top the first album. Or 2nd one.
Think of all the 2000s stuff.

murasaki · 30/06/2024 00:14

In theory, I don't like Coldplay.

In reality, I think they give a banging gig that I'd like to go to and I know more words than I think I do.

I suspect I'm not a rarity in this.

I don't know much about anything but I see that clip of a fan rushing Chris Martin and he's cringing at her. That's all I need to know.

What clip??

MuthaHubbard · 30/06/2024 00:16

Saw them live last year which was amazing - the atmosphere was just fantastic.
I agree they aren't seen as cool or whatever - I don't give a stuff -if I like a song/album/artist, I like it. That includes anything I can sing my head off to

Refugenewbie · 30/06/2024 00:16

I entirely agree as any right thinking person would. Their second album wasn't quite as good as the first.

Folkwhore · 30/06/2024 00:18

I honestly don't understand the hate (i mean i do, different tastes etc etc) but 100,000 people in a field singing their hearts out, coloured confetti, flashing wristbands, bouncing balls and fireworks- what is not to like? Pure Joy. And yes they have evolved over the TWENTY FIVE years that they have been around but so what - something they are doing is clearly working....

Heelworkhero · 30/06/2024 00:20

I thought it was a brilliant set!
Watched it at a naked club/event thing outdoors, with fire pits and strobe lighting, bunting and marquees up.
I felt quite emotional at one point!

Rollonsummer24 · 30/06/2024 00:24

Not a Coldplay fan. I really enjoyed that. Danced with my children, feel like I will remember this for a while!

I loved the second one - I prefer it to Parachutes. They’ve got some really good songs generally. And I’m impressed they keep on coming up with good songs, even now, after more than 20 years.

Wordsmithery · 30/06/2024 00:25

Agree, parachutes was amazing, raw and visceral. Subsequent albums got steadily more popular, less edgy, as is often the case.

I saw them at radio one big weekend recently. DH has always maintained he hated Coldplay and not interested in seeing them live (I saw them at Wembley a couple of years ago) then he watched the live event on TV and wished he had come too!

He couldn't even complain CM was wearing a sweaty too small tshirt at Glasto tonight, he had one that fitted! 🤣

I agree! I think that it’s been fashionable to hate them because they’ve always been associated with joy and happiness, and being yourself, rather than being ‘cool’.

Aquarius1234 · 30/06/2024 00:31

No normal person can prefer their new stuff to their first two albums.
And no I don't have either.

DuckOffAWatersBack · 30/06/2024 00:35

I really like them (something I've always thought...but would never have admitted openly in my youth!) but agree that their earlier stuff was better. There is something truly lovely about A Sky Full of Stars though. And I adore Adventure of a Lifetime (the Gorilla one!)

Same
I only actually like Clocks as there were really good dance versions of this played in clubs 2003.

Fire pits at a naked club sounds worrying. <misses point>

Miley1967 · 30/06/2024 00:40

I do love their music and thought it was a great show but did find CM a bit irritating tonight.

Also sounds great 😆

feellikeanalien · 30/06/2024 00:43

As I said on another thread DD and I loved dancing and singing along tonight. I think I may be a little in love with Chris Martin (but way too old for him😁)

SnowFrogJelly · 30/06/2024 00:45

The alien costumes were just silly

The girl in the white dress was great though

PinkSunsetSky · 30/06/2024 00:48

Yeah I didn’t like the alien heads either

stayathomer · 30/06/2024 01:00

Coldplay lost me at horrifically overpriced tickets that meant it was impossible for us as a family to ever see them again. (I also don’t like their latest latest stuff, just the last album really, they give an amazing show though!)

Aquarius1234 · 30/06/2024 01:08

The Killers, Oasis, Stereophonics, Elton John, Florence and the Machine. The Verve. Much better.

Just looking at previous list of who have.
I assume it's how big Coldplay got sales etc thar they seem to headline every 5 years. This was 6th time
But bit boring.
