Just watching Chris Martin prancing around the stage at Glasto singing his pop music and can't help feeling annoyed that they started off as one thing and completely sold out to pop. AIBU to say that their parachutes album was and always will be the best.

Always thought of Coldplay as 'music for people who don't really like music': bland, inoffensive, background stuff, suitable for dinner parties and mid-market clothes shops.

See also: Ed Sheeran, Snow Patrol, James Blunt et al (although James Blunt is, at least, very funny and self-effacing).

However, takes all sorts, I guess, and I'm sure a lot of my musical tastes wouldn't be for other people.

Come on then, name names so we can tell you your taste is shit too.Grin

I'm OK with liking uncool music, I like Take that as well as Coldplay....but who is cool? Or who do the cool people like? Will I have heard of them?

greencatbob · 30/06/2024 15:10

YABU to think they have anything 'best'.

Everything they do or have ever done is dire.

You're obviously dreadfully uncool if you have to ask 😂

User135644 · 30/06/2024 15:12

Very dull band and music for people that don't like music.

But then music is all about opinions.

DanielGault · 30/06/2024 15:15

I love music. My musical journey started off with a tape of the phantom of the opera soundtrack, and dad's v questionable Irish and Elvis records. On to Garth brooks randomly. Then Oasis. Then everything else. The beauty of music is you can have it all once you're open to it. You can pick and choose. Being snobby leads to you you losing out imo.

Should I confess to a guilty Westlife liking? Although my older teenagers didn't get the massively uncool memo as they were, well, not in existence and I haven't yet crushed their dreams when I hear them listening to Lighthouse. Hopefully not in front of their friends though

I am very old indeed and, in my time, have seen many big names (and many more small ones) live. Coldplay are up in my top 5 along with Queen, Springsteen, etc.
Music is always subjective and always should be but I think it's just become popular for the type of person who tries hard to be cool to sneer at them

In theory, I don't like Coldplay.

In reality, I think they give a banging gig that I'd like to go to and I know more words than I think I do.

I suspect I'm not a rarity in this.

This describes how I feel perfectly!

Totally. I mean, they're both legendary, surely?

I've seen hundreds of bands at festivals and gigs at my great age. Don't tell me I don't like music.

They were ok when they first came out but can’t be bothered with them now. Not quite sure why they are still so popular.

Music isn't about opinions, it's about emotions.

You can't argue someone into liking music. You feel it or you don't.

I agree! I think that it’s been fashionable to hate them because they’ve always been associated with joy and happiness, and being yourself, rather than being ‘cool’.

No, it's been fashionable to hate them because they are bland and vanilla but yet hugely, globally popular.

I like James Blunt. He's anti-cool cool!

He's certainly very funny. And his songs would probably have been relatively ok if they hadn't been been played within an inch of their lives.

beguilingeyes · 30/06/2024 17:00

Music snobs are the worst. So you don't like it...we don't care. Stop trying to prove you're cooler than the rest of us.
Comes with a side order of 'festivals were great when I was young but everything's soooo shit now'.

Noshowlomo · 30/06/2024 17:01

Enjoyed watching it. Cringe at Michael Eavis when he was being thanked. His face looked like thunder.

Yeah I thought that was really strange, he didn't even crack a smile! Maybe he didn't know he was on camera but still!

He looked really vacant. I was wondering if he was okay. Maybe he’s just really shy.

That's such a bizarre take, as though someone liking Coldplay means you can automatically predict the rest of their taste. I suspect the soundtrack of this house, which is wildly eclectic and occasionally includes Coldplay, would fry your brain completely.

Love what you wrote, I agree. I went to a FooFighters concert the other night and, I feel old saying it, but all Dave Grohl (who I love) did was scream at the top of his voice so that the words were incomprehensible and the music wasn't music at all but turned up so loud that it felt physically sickening and not a single note was identifiable. It was an overdone light show that I couldn't wait to see the end of.

By comparison, Coldplay produced just the best clearly audible, singalong, musical concert complete with lights and fireworks and flashing wristbands enhancing the whole thing. It was a long set which the band played like real musicians and sentiments for a better world, for one to one communication and the inclusion of other bands and a concert that was intended to entertain and reach out to every single person there.

I don't know why such hate and derision is always aimed at Coldplay but I suspect it's because they are reasonable, dare I say it nice, guys, good musicians who do their stuff and care about being human beings along with the people in front of them. I thought It was a stunning set.
