Just watching Chris Martin prancing around the stage at Glasto singing his pop music and can't help feeling annoyed that they started off as one thing and completely sold out to pop. AIBU to say that their parachutes album was and always will be the best.

2020: Cancelled due to COVID-19
2021: Cancelled due to COVID-19
2022: Billie Eilish, Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar
2023: Arctic Monkeys, Guns N' Roses, Elton John
2024: Dua Lipa, SZA and Coldplay

Hmmm interesting.

Aquarius1234 · 30/06/2024 01:24

Elvis Costello, The Cure and Colplay very popular with the owners..

And CM is the least attractive front man ever. He seems the opposite of down to earth also. Bizzare weird and boring.

You are way to critical l. He is neither least attractive front man nor the opposite of down to earth. There is a reason why he is loved by millions.

They'd sold out after Shiver imho!

Man is a egotistical prick.

I'm not a Coldplay fan but that gig tonight was so beautiful and genuinely moving. We need more love and togetherness in these v trying time s right now.

In theory, I don't like Coldplay.

In reality, I think they give a banging gig that I'd like to go to and I know more words than I think I do.

I suspect I'm not a rarity in this.

Definitely not a rarity. It was background noise while I did some ironing & I thought ‘here we go with that Yellow song’ & found myself knowing the words to most of their set. Then my sons (26 & 24) came to raid the fridge, got engrossed, ironing was abandoned as we danced, sang & made cheese on toast & had more impromptu fun than we’ve had in years.

gruberandassocs · 30/06/2024 02:30

Coldplay were ruined for me when my DP said that Chris Martin looked like he would have smelly feet. Sort of knew what he meant and now always associated with stinking shoes and sweaty feet..random I know

Coldplay are the band that the “cewl” people love to hate. When you press them on why they give you obscure jealously reasons. I get when you see someone like you in every way (white, middle class etc) being that successful then confronting. I had this issue with Emma Watson, after she played Hermione. My friend was the same with Anne Hathaway.

They have generally good and even some spectacular albums and are great touring artists. They are not fantastically interesting as people- apart from Chris Martin most people couldn’t name the other members, but I went to a concert after Rush of Blood to the Head album and they swapped instruments in some of the songs. I think they are the real deal.

HobbitDreader · 30/06/2024 03:12

I saw them at Wembley in 2002 I think (maybe 2001?)
They were utter pants. Total waste of money, could not play to a stadium sized audience at all, sped all the songs up to try and energize the audience. Failed.

This. I was doing an awful lot of singing along for someone who doesn't like CP....

Vargas · 30/06/2024 09:32

My teen daughter thinks Coldplay vv uncool but somehow managed to sit through the entire concert on the sofa 'reading' her book....😂

I don't know much about anything but I see that clip of a fan rushing Chris Martin and he's cringing at her. That's all I need to know.

What clip is this?

Grundellsclearing99 · 30/06/2024 09:56

I watched it but I thought they over-complicated the set, too much talking and stops and starts and different guests Just sing the songs fhs! The alien heads just ridiculous. But it was the first time Glasto was broadcast live abroad so that explains all of the different interruptions I suppose.

However, I disagree that CM can't sing, the acoustic song they did on the small stage standing in a circle disproved that, but again it was interrupted. I just wanted him to finish it. Most of the songs have a massive range that are quite hard to sing too.

I was impressed with CM's energy though. He obviously puts some serious training in as he seems to be looking younger not older, but again maybe that's bc I have become seriously ancient since they started performing.

HandsDown84 · 30/06/2024 10:00

I saw them at a relatively small gig in France in 2005 (X and Y) and in 2012 at a stadium (Mylo Xyloto) and they were 2 of the best gigs I've ever seen, but even 12 years ago it was all going a bit swirly neon beachball. Not sure I'd go now!

Nowifi · 30/06/2024 10:06

I love that they played Sparks, such a beautiful song! Agree the first album was the best, I don't really know much after AROBTTH but they all seem like nice guys who genuinely get along.

beguilingeyes · 30/06/2024 10:06

They are a storming live band. Saw them at Shepherds Bush Empire a couple of years ago, which was fantastic.
The bass player is beautiful.
I've never quite understood the hate. It's just cool to disparage them. TS seems to be going the same way.

HandsDown84 · 30/06/2024 10:08

Fizbosshoes · 30/06/2024 00:25

I saw them at radio one big weekend recently. DH has always maintained he hated Coldplay and not interested in seeing them live (I saw them at Wembley a couple of years ago) then he watched the live event on TV and wished he had come too!

He couldn't even complain CM was wearing a sweaty too small tshirt at Glasto tonight, he had one that fitted! 🤣

Edited

When I saw him in 2005 he'd cut out the armpits of his top 😁

BitOutOfPractice · 30/06/2024 10:10

Why oh why does Chris Martin continually write songs that are far too high for his whiney nasally irritating voice to cope with. God it’s like fingers down a blackboard. And , often flat to boot.

I agree op, they used to be good. Now they are just tripe.

Rockschooldropout · 30/06/2024 10:10

I stoped listening to Coldplay after X and Y … however Rush of Blood to the head is a fantastic album and still holds very special memories for me
Amsterdam is a fantastic song .
We put last nights gig on and actually really enjoyed it (after I had said we were absolutely not watching it )

Confusedbythistreat · 30/06/2024 10:13

It was very spectacular it has to be said!

Goldenbear · 30/06/2024 10:15

Ineedanewsofa · 29/06/2024 23:04

For someone that can’t really sing, he’s done well for himself, they write catchy songs and put on a great show. Coldplay have always been safe, cheery, lift music. He seems like someone who is grateful for his good fortune. Amused at the thought they were ever anything other than a pop band

I don’t think that is the case personally - DH and I were watching a documentary on Camden last night (Glastonbury is so boring this year) and Coldplay in the early days played the pubs that the likes of the Libertines, Amy Winehouse, Blur played in starting out, they didn’t get signed though at that point.

LlynTegid · 30/06/2024 10:29

I consciously uncoupled myself from listening to them years ago. I suppose the positives you can say about them is that they appear to treat women with some level of respect, there is not homophobia in their music, and none of them have been drug dealers.

I understand why in a world of conflict, hate and given all that has happened in the UK over recent years, blandness is an understandable reaction, an escape from the horrors in the music you listen to. There are limits though.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/06/2024 10:31

I don't get the hate. I saw them live after the first album and then a few times since. They have always been an excellent live band but they've taken their shows up to a whole other level in recent years.

I went to one of the Wembley stadium shows a few years ago and they somehow made it feel like an intimate gig. I described it at the time as the most fun party I've ever been to. They have a wide appeal too - my two DC age 16 and 18 love them.

We took DS with us to the Wembley stadium gig and he says it's the best gig he's ever been to. He is usually into rappers I've never heard of and grime artists.

DD16 actually sat with us to watch Coldplay at Glasto last night - she never ever sits and watches TV or anything with us so for that alone I'm grateful as she's been struggling mental health wise lately and we sometimes struggle to get her to join in with family life.

TheMoth · 30/06/2024 10:32

They've always been quite boring, so I don't think they've really sold out. It's music for people who like something safe and familiar. t depresses me that so many teenagers like them. Come on kids, there's so many current bands for you to like. You're not supposed to like your parents' music.
