To report my neighbour for indecent exposure in his garden?

jumbojumbo · 19/06/2024 11:24

On regular occasions when I look out of my bedroom window at the back of my house, I have seen the elderly neighbour opposite standing fully naked in his back garden. Not only this but he is touching himself, and stands right by his back door clearly wanting people to see. It's absolutely disgusting, and bothering me quite a bit, especially since I have young children.

I have looked into indecent exposure but this seems to need to be in a public place, not sure whether since this is his own garden whether that would count?

Does anyone know if I can report this and whether anything is likely to be done about it?

I think I'd ring 101 and ask what the law is on this.

rwalker · 19/06/2024 11:27

If he’s sat wank then he’s breaking the law if he’s just parading around naked then he’s not

KimberleyClark · 19/06/2024 11:31

I realise it’s a Mumsnet cliche but if he’s elderly then he may not be fully compos mentis. Do you e er talk to him? Does he seem otherwise ok? I speak as someone with experience of dementia.

Yes he's masturbating.

If you are that bothered could you out a note through his door or actually speak to him?

Our neighbour at the back has a house orientated side on. I am told he does a naked streak from his bathroom to bedroom. Problem is our houses have a window on the landing.

As we are a household of adults its only my 26 year daughter who notices. I’ve said the same to her, if you are that bothered go and speak to him. So far she has said nothing

festivallove · 19/06/2024 11:35

I had foster children who told me that a young female student living directly across the road was regularly stripping off at her window and dancing in the window. I was a bit disbelieving at first until I saw it myself, she was also looking directly over at the foster child's window as she was dancing. I spoke to the police who took it very seriously and paid her a visit. They gave me some follow up to say she had been very apologetic and didn't know why she was doing it but would stop. It did stop but I've always wondered why she did it, very attractive 18/ 19 year old young woman. The police did say that if she did it again they would attempt to charge her but I don't know what with

I don't know as I've never had spoken to him, (he lives on a different street but our yards back onto each other) but IMO he seems fine. A neighbour who lives in my street who has seen him doing it as well has said she has spoken to him before and he's sound of mind.

Thank you this is really helpful, gives me hope that something may actually be done to stop it. Think I will contact 101.

Set some speakers up to play benny hill music at ten million decibels or something once he gets going?

But seriously report with the police, there's a big difference between a bit of topless sunbathing or nuddy gardening and openly having a wank in view of the whole street.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/06/2024 11:39

Yes I would report that to the police

FunLurker · 19/06/2024 11:40

As previous posted said being naked isn't a crime but walking in public is. Speak to the police, they will go and speak to the man in question. If he's of sound mind they will tell him the consequences of his actions if he's not of sound mind they will get the relevant people involved. Ask the police if you should record it as evidence -wouldn't recommend recording without them agreeing- I'm sure it's not illegal to record but not worth the hassle it night cause, especially if said person is unwell.
Also keep a note of when you see it happening, first thing, last thing or random times

So she was doing it on purpose to be seen by the kids? Rather than just dancing naked in her house not realising she could be seen?

Surely that’s a sign that she had something wrong with her and should have been charged or referred for mental health support? Dancing naked so children can see you, in purpose, should be an offence.

fortifiedwithtea · 19/06/2024 11:42

@Mrsjayy I posted before seeing that OP’s neighbour is wanking. That is grim and you are right best not to engage directly. He know’s what he is doing.

rwalker · 19/06/2024 11:42

jumbojumbo · 19/06/2024 11:32

Yes he's masturbating.

it’s a good thing because it makes it very clear there potential to cause offence by performing a sexual act in public view

where as if he was just walking around naked he can argue he has no intention of offending anyone

I want to say film him for evidence but the way if the world nowadays I’d be concerned you’d get done for filming without consent

I’d be tempted to do a video of my house and accidentally film out of the window

timetobegin · 19/06/2024 11:43

Just call the police.

Thanks for this, I did consider filming it as evidence as I was thinking the police would need proof, but then I read something about getting into trouble myself for filming a naked person. So I'll see what they advise first.

Yeah get their advice as I'm betting the response will be area dependent

medianewbie · 19/06/2024 11:47

Call the Police. This person is openly repeatedly & deliberately masturbating outside for others to witness. Tell them you understand other neighbours have asked him to stop & he's ignored it. You have young children. Would they prefer you to record it or would they like to observe ftom your house (he'll deny it).

Yeah it is grim and needs stopped.

DizzyBumble · 19/06/2024 11:51

I would call the police, if no other reason than to do a welfare check in case he has some form of dementia

Beautifulbythebay · 19/06/2024 11:56

My ds was flashed at recently in public. The man has form. And also for wanking in a local freezer food shop!!. 7 arrests he has had. Charged eventually.. Report.. Do not record unless the police ask you to.

IgoogledYOLO · 19/06/2024 11:56

The police can decide if it's dementia related. It needs to stop and they will set consequences based on this.

If he knows children are watching then that's worse (appreciate you haven't said that your kids have seen. Any neighbours to be concerned about?).
