To report my neighbour for indecent exposure in his garden?

jumbojumbo · 19/06/2024 11:24

On regular occasions when I look out of my bedroom window at the back of my house, I have seen the elderly neighbour opposite standing fully naked in his back garden. Not only this but he is touching himself, and stands right by his back door clearly wanting people to see. It's absolutely disgusting, and bothering me quite a bit, especially since I have young children.

I have looked into indecent exposure but this seems to need to be in a public place, not sure whether since this is his own garden whether that would count?

Does anyone know if I can report this and whether anything is likely to be done about it?

I realise it’s a Mumsnet cliche but if he’s elderly then he may not be fully compos mentis. Do you e er talk to him? Does he seem otherwise ok? I speak as someone with experience of dementia.

It’s a truly a Mumsnet meme - over 50 =Dementia
Under 50 =Autism for anything remotely differing from the norm.

I'm surprised by that. The officer I spoke to today seemed to think that if he was in his own house, nothing would happen to him. He even said if he was just naked in his garden it would be difficult to find a crime. But it was the masturbating part that crossed the line.

Just keep reporting if you keep seeing it, hopefully somebody will go round.

Glad the police have been so proactive.

I've also had a similar problem with my neighbour. I contacted the police and they took it very seriously as well, although they didn't come out on the same day, but whatever they said to him has obviously scared the shit out of him and I've barely seen him since.

I would encourage anyone in a similar situation to report it straight to the police. I think we hear a lot about when the police have been useless or dismissive and that puts people off reporting things, but don't hear as often when they have been helpful.

I'd also encourage people to report and I'm really pleased I have done and wish I had done it sooner actually as this has been happening for over a year now. I'm really impressed with how they police have dealt with it, part of me thought they would brush it off and say he can do what he likes in his own garden.

Did the police give you any details on what the guy said? Like… what the hell was he playing at?

I remember getting flashed at as a kid/teenager people used to joke about it sketch shows would have men in macs and it would be "hilarious " it isn't hilarious its horrific, there used to be an old man do it at his window when we walked home from school, nobody did anything just laughed at "old jim"

Yes it’s revolting-
Horrible little Turkey giblets - no one wants to see it-
@jumbojumbo Glad police took it seriously.

Edited

At school we visited a Magistrate’s Court and sat through some cases in the public seats
One case was of a wretched man who was flashing a young woman on Richmond Station
The questions the Male magistrate asked were not good.
Sadly the perp got away with it as the poor victim couldn’t tell if the perps penis was erect or not.

The girls on the class were 🤬as we had all been flashed at at some time.

I'd knock first and tell him that your children have witnessed this (whether they have or not) and that if you see it again you will be reporting him. Then if it happens again call 101 and explain that he is doing it in full view of children and that he is aware they can see him. Police will take it very seriously if he is knowingly masturbating in front of children.

If you don't want to knock, put a note through his letterbox.

Why? There is no need to engage with him.it is a police matter.

Abeona · 19/06/2024 15:32

Edited because I now see the OP has reported this to the police. Well done, OP.

A couple of years ago during Covid my DP was helping to deliver supplies to local residents. (My partner is a woman, by the way). She knocked at one house which had a solid front door but a long clear glass side panel each side of it. The man living there came down the hall stark naked, with an erection, and then touched himself when he saw her there with a box of supplies. She took a photo of him and left.

She reported him to the police and he admitted exposing himself (gave them some nonsense about not being able to find his dressing gown and waking up with an erection when she rang). She was asked if she wanted them to take it to court and as she'd subsequently found out from others that he often did this, she said yes. He pleaded guilty and now has a criminal record. So please, follow this up. Flashing and masturbating in public is often indicative of worse things done in private.

MoMo999 · 19/06/2024 16:01

I have heard of cases where people have been dealt with by the Police even if it is in their own garden. So I agree with the person who said ring 101 and discuss it.

LlynTegid · 19/06/2024 16:04

Glad to read of the police response. Hope it is never repeated.

diddl · 19/06/2024 16:11

What???

So what was he being accused of I wonder that this was a deciding factor?

LakeTiticaca · 19/06/2024 16:21

Phone 999. He's committing a sexoffence jn public

coxesorangepippin · 19/06/2024 16:46

It's irrelevant if he's compus mentus or not

He's wanking in the garden, it's a problem!!

Sorry but 😂

coxesorangepippin · 19/06/2024 16:48

Could you put up a fence?

^

She's had enough of erections

Upinthenightagain · 19/06/2024 16:51

Can’t believe you left it a year. He’s a sexual deviant. These men usually escalate their behaviours. Flashers and wankers always need reporting.

Cerealkiller4U · 19/06/2024 16:54

I work with the police

i avtually asked this question once before.

tou can call the police. Even in his own back garden sexual activities cannot cause alarm.

call them.

Viviennemary · 19/06/2024 16:54

I expect the most likely thing would be he has some kind of Dementia. I think you should get the police to deal with it. They will be used to this kind of thing.

Cerealkiller4U · 19/06/2024 16:56

rwalker · 19/06/2024 11:42

it’s a good thing because it makes it very clear there potential to cause offence by performing a sexual act in public view

where as if he was just walking around naked he can argue he has no intention of offending anyone

I want to say film him for evidence but the way if the world nowadays I’d be concerned you’d get done for filming without consent

I’d be tempted to do a video of my house and accidentally film out of the window

Don’t film it!!!!

Bellyblueboy · 19/06/2024 17:06

@festivallove this is one of the most obvious examples of pretty privilege I have seen in a while!

had she been overweight and /or unattractive would that have changed your view? Would have been less puzzled by her deviant behaviour?

why on earth would an attractive person possibly be unkind/violent/abusive/?

silverfullmoon · 19/06/2024 17:07

Thats is absolutely gross and yes, dementia can cause disinhibition but equally, many men (yes, including the older ones too) are just perverts who get off on this kind of thing. I suspect he was just as disgusting when he was younger too. We had an old man living two doors down from us, he did NOT have dementia, and he used to regularly try to look into our bedroom window and spy on me and other women in the street. It was horrible. He'd also make lecherous comments all the time and try to start up conversations which quickly turned sexual.

Definitely report it- its completely out of order and the police need to speak to him.

AmelieTaylor · 19/06/2024 17:08

@jumbojumbo

i think it was the 'answering the door' that crossed their line.

I think there has to be intent to cause public outrage or whatever it’s called. I knew a woman who lived in a high rise flat whose windows overlooked a male prison and she was done for deliberately standing in the windows naked to taunt the prisoners.

silverfullmoon · 19/06/2024 17:12

Oh just saw your update- well done OP!

The reason they take it seriously is because flashing like that usually always escalates- there is a ton of research on this and flashers often progress to more serious crimes so its taken seriously as an indicator of potential future issues. I am glad he's been warned.
