To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

Does the ID have your date of birth on?
He probably needed to confirm what's on the card vs what answer you give.
What's the problem with that ?
(although if you are over 60 it's a bit over the top to check you're old enough for alcohol)

Gakpo · 18/06/2024 19:39

It’s just ID for the alcohol, I really don’t see the issue. They ask me every time and I just tell them.

Redglitter · 18/06/2024 19:40

The poor guy was doing his job, asking a question he has to ask. Honestly what's the big deal in giving it. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

ZebraZone · 18/06/2024 19:40

What fraud is someone going to commit with your date of birth?

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:40

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

He was being ridiculous- if you have an Oyster card you presumably look over 21? However, you are being unreasonable if you let him take all the shopping away just to avoid giving him your full DOB.

Catza · 18/06/2024 19:41

He is doing his job. He is abiding by his employer’s rule. Do you seriously think he took up a job of a delivery driver just to get a few DOBs for his “get rich quick scheme”?
You are within your rights to refuse, he is within his rights to not leave your shopping. I imagine your convenience is not worth losing his job over.

Yes and the ID has your date of birth on it! On some systems you have to type the customers DOB into the system. Are you always so paranoid?

boozeclues · 18/06/2024 19:42

You are in your 60s! I want to know your secret!!!

Although there are two reasons he needed this;

  1. because his system needed him to type it in
  2. because he was being funny/sleazy
IncognitoUsername · 18/06/2024 19:43

@LadyLapsang what was your reason for not giving him your DOB? What fraud did you think he was going to commit?

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 18/06/2024 19:43

Ah a stealth boast! I get it now 🤣

KnitnNatterAuntie · 18/06/2024 19:44

I ordered a cake knife to match the rest of my cutlery and had to send evidence of my DOB to the cutlery company. When the delivery driver arrived I had to give my full DOB . . . I didn't have an issue with this

I am in receipt of a state pension 😂

Starlightstarbright3 · 18/06/2024 19:44

The policy will be a policy based on any restricted products.. it is a blanket policy so drivers don’t need to make a judgement but you make his day a little bit harder for no reason at all 🙄

Needmorelego · 18/06/2024 19:44

@LadyLapsang sometimes in a shop (or pub or wherever) they might ask your date of birth as a way of double checking that the card isn't a fake.
Unusual to do it for a 60 year old - but actually a quite frequent thing for retailers to do.

Delivering for Amazon & you have to ask it has to match what's on the system and with the person who placed the order for alcohol, certain Chemicals, tobacco products/vapes & sharp tools/knives.
Even when we can see the persons 100% old enough it's not worth losing your job over.

Iagrewithhim · 18/06/2024 19:46

I never give my DOB for stuff like this. I put in a DOB that's not quite right. Oh heavens, did I get the actual day wrong? Silly me. Fat fingers. The delivery driver just needs to know you are over 18 and can make the damned date up.

If you are handing over photo ID, your address (obviously) and your correct DOB then you have given over a fair whack of info.

BraMaHaLas · 18/06/2024 19:46

Way to go for making his minimum wage job more frustrating, I bet your shopping got a round of applause when it was returned to the shop.

How are you going to cope with voting next month when they ask for ID?

crochetmylifeaway · 18/06/2024 19:47

They have to input a date of birth on the handheld to authorise the delivery of alcohol. If he didn't then he would be in a lot of trouble and could even lose his job. YABVVVU

They have to type in date of birth

No but on the till they have to type the date of birth in to clear the prompt

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:49

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

I hate to break it to you, but anyone can volunteer to work at a polling station.
