To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

@ForFirmBiscuit Amazon carry out regular mystery shopper audits to make sure drivers are verifying ID

Feelingstrange2 · 19/06/2024 02:50

You need to learn to risk assess and drop the paranoia

Topseyt123 · 19/06/2024 02:53

What a ridiculous thing to refuse to do!! Did you actually want your shopping to be delivered?

Very foolish.

ForGreyKoala · 19/06/2024 02:54

The paranoia some people have is ridiculous. What do you think they are going to do with your birth date? How I would hate to be so suspicious of everyone.
You've learned the price you pay OP, no DOB, no shopping! Your own silly fault.

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

Usually you have to put the date of birth into an app that allows you to mark the delivery as complete. That's all. Chances are driver will have forgotten the actual date by the time they are back in the van.

Bit fuss about nothing

That is because the ID you use (driving licence, passport, other ID card) has your date of birth already on it. That's one of the main things they are actually looking for. They aren't simply admiring the (crap) photo.

Starlight7080 · 19/06/2024 03:18

Tesco whoosh you have to give dob if ordering alcohol or medicine. Its standard procedure.
Don't order from these places if you can't read the terms and conditions.
He was just doing as he is told. He doesn't care about your details on a personal level .
Don't be so dramatic

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 19/06/2024 03:33

I just tell them a random date. As long as the year matched up they dont care

amylou8 · 19/06/2024 03:42

YABU he was doing his job. Make one up if you're concerned.

Opinionwontchangeluv · 19/06/2024 04:08

Just give a fake date of birth I always do, not telling some stranger my details

LuckyOrMaybe · 19/06/2024 05:47

Just because companies' systems demand something doesn't mean that it is acceptable. If we don't push back against excessive data demands then we sleepwalk into problems. Personally I think it is quite different someone looking at a DOB on ID to confirm someone's age, and actually recording that DOB on a device - there is almost certainly a GDPR challenge that could be made here I think.

doi - I rarely buy alcohol and don't do online supermarket shopping; I think the last time I can recall being age ID'd would have been when I was a teenager not yet old enough for student ID for public transport purposes where I grew up (tricky when inspectors wouldn't believe I was under 16 from the age of 13!).

Yawn ..... 🙄

FiveShelties · 19/06/2024 05:58

I am sure the driver had total respect for you as he walked away.🙄

ZOeZebra35 · 19/06/2024 06:01

If it’s Uber delivery I get asked this everytime. You don’t need to show them any ID just give a date - I give a fake one everytime and I often have the same delivery guy! They don’t care they just need a date.

BreezySheep · 19/06/2024 06:12

I know it seems ridiculous when you’re obviously over 18, but I’ve done some delivery work and as the driver you have to enter the year of customers birth into the delivery app or you’re not allowed to leave the goods. The particular company I worked for only asked for the year, not the whole date of birth, and I know it seems daft but thems the rules for the drivers unfortunately! And it’s really, really annoying to have to take deliveries back. So basically, I wouldn’t worry about fraudulent drivers; they’re just doing their job; but if you are uncomfortable with it don’t order any booze, knives, glue, medication etc…

ScuttlesMcGee · 19/06/2024 06:20

The websites say you will need to show ID for age restricted items when you're checking out, you agree to this if you place an order. If it really bothers you couldn't you just give a different date in the same year rather than making a fuss?

Sux2buthen · 19/06/2024 06:22

I don't know what this says about me, but I went to tell the Deliveroo driver my DOB for alcohol and he said 'it's alright I remember it now' 🤣🍷

Buffypaws · 19/06/2024 06:23

Get your wine from a wine club. Naked wines doesn’t do this to me. I simply come home and there is a case of wine on my doorstep!

I'm 57 and I have been asked. Some deliveries I have had an email saying I will need to show IF that I am over 18.

Honestly when you get older it irks you to confirm your age , as so many people are rude about it.

I now knock 10 years off my age

if they take the wine back, so be it.

thats a little desperate. Why pretended you’re ten years younger than you are to a stranger?

RampantIvy · 19/06/2024 06:55

Why would you cut your nose off to spite your face like this? It inconveniences you far more than the supermarket.

I think you are just being petty.

sanogo · 19/06/2024 06:58

You've created this situation yourself and now you're moaning about it whilst sitting at home with an empty fridge

They ask for a DOB because they have to enter it into the system. They need to stay compliant. He was just doing his job and you made life difficult

Bewareofthisonetoo · 19/06/2024 07:08

Just make one up…

Springchickenonion · 19/06/2024 07:11

He's just doing his job @LadyLapsang probably didn't think your paranoia was worth losing his job and income over... you are the only one who lost in this situation. As you will now need to do your shopping again and wait for the refund
