To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

It's not a legal document tho that the government accept for age approval.

parkrun500club · 23/06/2024 19:19

It's not a legal requirement to ask for ID at the door, because I get wine delivered and they will leave it outside without anyone being there.

But if you open the door and they think you are under 25 they will ask at the door in the same way as they do in a shop.

I can't see any reason why they need to ask someone who is very obviously over 25. My DH was asked when SIL sent him alcohol for his birthday. DH looks good, but he doesn't look THAT good :)

I'd like to see our rules reformed because they are nonsensical and have never ever stopped someone under 18 getting hold of alcohol if they really want it.

niclw · 23/06/2024 19:23

I had this from a delivery driver once before when I hadn't ordered anything except food and a bottle of Diet Coke. He said that his sheet said there was alcohol in the bag so he had to ask. I refused to give him the date as there was no reason for giving it. He took my shopping away and this delivery company I've lost a permanent customer. I would give my DOB to a random person over the phone or online so why should I for a bottle of Coke and food.

Needmorelego · 23/06/2024 19:25

@niclw but then you must have had to go out and purchase the food and diet coke from somewhere else if you had wanted it that badly. What a time waste for you.

Nope. I just waited until I went to the supermarket the next time. It was an annoying but I'm not giving out my personal details on my doorstep when anyone could have been listening. I may not trust people but at least I know I'm doing everything I can to protect myself. And as I said I would give out details to a random person on the phone so I don't get how this is different. And in my case it didn't even involve an age restricted product. Absolute ridiculous. If you all want to risk your details then that is your choice.

niclw · 23/06/2024 19:37

Meant wouldn't give out details

Needmorelego · 23/06/2024 20:42

@niclw what do you class as a "random person".
If I phone my GP Surgery for an appointment the first thing they ask is date of birth - because that's how their system is set to identify you.
Is the receptionist a "random person" or an employee of the surgery?
A delivery person is an employee of whatever delivery company you order from.
They are both just people employed to do those jobs.
Would you refuse to give your child's dob to their school because the admin assistant is a "random person"?
There was obviously an error in your case as you hadn't ordered age restricted products but I really can't understand why you would waste your time to go to the effort of ordering something to then refuse to reply to a perfectly normal question so you went without your food and drink.
And who exactly is going to be listening in to hear you say "23.6.70" or whatever from your door step?

Needmorelego · 23/06/2024 20:45

@niclw I mean how on earth do you do things in life like apply for a passport or open a bank account or rent a property if you are keeping your date of birth secret and refusing to give it to some "random person" (ie an employee)?

I hate to break it to you, but anyone can volunteer to work at a polling station.

So true! They only check your availability 😂 No DBS or anything

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:49

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

Actually, they're not. Most of them are local residents, students and other randomers who apply to work at elections because we need thousands of them. A few, me included, are employees of the local authority. So you probably shouldn't go and vote as who knows who might steal your identity whilst you're there 😂

PlaneMum19 · 24/06/2024 01:43

Hate to break it to you OP! My job I can get your DOB, can confirm I do not commit fraud with it!

liann34 · 24/06/2024 04:42

People like you are the worst. Stop power tripping and let the man get on with his stressful, tiring, badly paid job.

Signed, everyone who has worked in this sort of job before.

I am well aware that no amount of frothing on here will change anything. And in the meantime in the misguided belief they are somehow "clever" (they aren't) the OP is quite happy to inconvenience themselves (no harm there), but also some poor sod who just wants to do their minimum wage job without the CEO levels of hassle.

It is only through inconveniencing ourselves that we effect any change. Many people have inconvenienced themselves to give you the rights you value as well as those you take for granted.

GrannyRose15 · 24/06/2024 10:40

SerendipityJane · 19/06/2024 15:44

Not just sacked. They could be criminally liable. I have no issue with a supermarket employee making a reasonable enquiry as a part of avoiding a conviction.

If the OP is so vexed about it, they need to focus their energy where it matters. Starting with their local MP to begin a change in the law. Because no retailer can change their practices with the law as it stands.

A law intended to protect children, by the way.

Any retailer can change their practices if they want to. They are not complying with the law they are extending it to make life easier for themselves. They don’t care how difficult they make it for their customers.

I am so sorry if I am shitting on the memory of those brave souls who stood up the the evils of fascism by making a complete arse of themselves in front of some random stranger (as they have defined the enemy) and who were forced to endure the horrors of having to get their sorry selves to a real shop where more real people can play "judge the age" roulette.

We need a day to honour these brave people. Selfless (and possibly gormless). Maybe April 1st.

Probably best I leave this thread. It's clear I am part of the problem, not the solution.

GrumpyOldCrone · 24/06/2024 11:24

I have no reason to suspect that the drivers who deliver to me would commit identity fraud with my details. But what happens to my data after it is entered into the handheld device? Is it immediately deleted? Or is it kept on a database somewhere? Data breaches do happen sometimes, and it’s sensible to minimise the risk.

I’ve only ever been asked for my year of birth, but I’d refuse to give my full date of birth on the basis that it’s unnecessary in these circumstances. I always give a fake DOB when I consider that my real DOB is unnecessary. I certainly don’t think the local supermarkets need it.

I'm helping with the polling next week....I'll be checking ID's and although I'm being paid by the local authority for the day...I'm otherwise not an employee of the Local Authority and they have done approximately 0 checks on me...

GrannyRose15 · 24/06/2024 13:36

SerendipityJane. Well we can at least agree on one thing. You are part of the problem. But I think you have failed to grasp that I have moved on from the specifics of this case to more general points. Such is the nature of debate whether it be on MN or anywhere else.

Oh I grasped it from the gecko. Thing is you can't make me dance to your tune, much less an entire country.

I can post a picture of Chester Draws if it helps ?

PandasMum · 24/06/2024 15:32

It’ll match the details you’ve already provided online: how else would the driver prove they didn’t hand good to an underage person? If you’re worried about the supermarket having your data then don’t shop online with them.

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

You get asked for your id which they then look at to input your date of birth
