To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

He asked because of the wine. Google yourself. I would be surprised if your birthday isn't on the internet.

Good for you. If enough people did this they’d stop asking for a level of detail they don’t need.

This.

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

You mean ID with your full date of birth in it?

GinForBreakfast · 18/06/2024 22:14

You're being ridiculous. Drive yourself to the supermarket if you don't want to comply with their rules.

Fluffypuppy1 · 18/06/2024 22:16

Why didn’t you just tell him a fake DOB? I have one for anyone who I don’t think really needs to know my real DOB.

CurbsideProphet · 18/06/2024 22:20

When we have our Tesco delivered we have never been asked to confirm DOB or show ID for any alcohol. Maybe we look so haggered since having our DS that there's not even the remote possibly that we are underage!

Honestly when you get older it irks you to confirm your age , as so many people are rude about it.

I now knock 10 years off my age

if they take the wine back, so be it.

You get asked for your ID so they can check your date of birth.. to see your age!!!
The driver was probably asking because he had to input it into his system…

BeRealOrca · 18/06/2024 22:46

I assume this was through Uber or Deliveroo? They will be using an app that requires your full date of birth to be entered or they can't deliver it. Doesn't matter how old you look.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 18/06/2024 22:47

I dont get why they need a date of birth - surely the year would do? And why bother asking someone who is clearly beyond 30. Makes no sense.
I dont really get the "get over yourself" comments on this thread either tbh. I see no risk in telling a delivery driver my d.o.b but I see no reason to divulge such precise details either.

LakeTiticaca · 18/06/2024 22:48

Think 25 only applies if you appear to be under 25 when purchasing restricted goods. Delivery driver taking the piss when someone is over 60.
Make a complaint

Thiswayorthatway · 18/06/2024 19:49

Oh get over yourself 🙄

This.

How ridiculous and paranoid.

It's his job to ask, his employer's rules.

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

No they are not.

Many are volunteers from the community.

ForGreyKoala · 18/06/2024 23:04

How hard is it to give someone your date of birth? Why do you care about having to do so?

Honestly, get a grip!

What do you think they’re looking at when they ask to see your ID in a shop? 😂

Just go to the supermarket then or just give your date of birth and stop being fucking awkward.

Why? Wtf do you think they're going to do with your real date of birth, send you a birthday card?

Nope. Anyone can volunteer.
What are you going to do then? Make their lives harder like you did to the delivery driver? Q

MonsteraMama · 18/06/2024 23:11

Yeah. Maybe the op should order 10m of tin foil to wrap around her head before she orders any more alcohol.

Sarahzb · 18/06/2024 23:59

I would't give my full dob
Amazon now accept just a year. Not even my real DOB but they accept it
had an argument ages ago and i covered up the month and the date on my passport. Go away if you don't like it

dottiedodah · 19/06/2024 00:40

In my late 50s .It is usual to be asked for D O B when I have ordered Alcohol online. No big deal Honestly, what are the chances of seeing him again? hes just doing his job !

I did Amazon deliveries and on day one of training, it was drummed into us that handing over parcels without asking for ID, if mandated on the delivery app was instant dismissal. The DOB on the ID has to match the system.

They get in touch with people ordering over 18 goods and ask them to try to convince drivers to hand over without ID and offer vouchers for it. They call them mystery shoppers.

I had plenty of arguments with people who refused, or claimed not to have a licence - with two cars on the drive! If they absolutely refused, I'd ring the base to explain and it was ALWAYS accompanied with swearing and abuse.

Delivery drivers have limited time from door to door, they don't want to waste time arguing and be late for the rest of the day.

Peonii · 19/06/2024 01:57

Oh goodness you just reminded of my predicament a few weeks ago.

I tend to use a fake DOB when I sign up to apps because I don't trust them to keep my details safe and so I just randomly select whatever dates and numbers without paying much attention to it.. when the delivery driver asked me for my DOB I was stumped and had to call customer services to get my order off him!
