To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

all delivery people have to ask for your date of birth when delivering alcohol, it’s really not a big deal. Sometimes I give my correct one, sometimes I make one up as there’s nothing more soul destroying than watching them scroll and scroll and scroll to my year of birth. So long as you give a date of birth when you’re over 18, it’s fine.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 18/06/2024 19:51

He's just doing his job. On a few deliveries I've been told to have ID at the ready, and sometimes they take it, sometimes they just ask for date of birth.

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

And, of course, we have never heard of a government employee committing fraud, right?

dieselKiller · 18/06/2024 19:52

Good for you. If enough people did this they’d stop asking for a level of detail they don’t need.

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 18/06/2024 19:52

Do you not give your date of birth when asked to confirm your identity by any company that you may call?
You’re being ridiculous on this occasion. It’s hardly an unsolicited request. Grocery delivery drivers are just as likely to fraudulently use your details as any other staff member asking for it. Very slim, and I deal with fraud welfare visits to victims.

Lemonade2011 · 18/06/2024 19:53

So you’re just telling him? He’s hardly likely to commit it to memory? Or photocopy your Oyster card? I’m sure he values his job more than that. He’s got your address and how you paid already if you were that bothered you’d not shop online either tbh.

BlueMum16 · 18/06/2024 19:54

Just give them a made up one?

Yes this - if the person isn't checking the date (meaning they already have the info anyway) then just give an adjusted date.

Coastalcreeksider · 18/06/2024 20:00

I had alcohol delivered with my shopping last week and the lovely, polite young man who brought it didn't ask me anything about proof of DOB. We chatted about the weather and he bid me a cheery have a nice day.

I don't think I've ever been asked now I think about it.

I must look ancient ... 🙁

sandyhappypeople · 18/06/2024 20:00

He has to input it to prove he’s checked, it’s literally a box ticking exercise and he isn’t allowed to make one up, but well done for making a simple task 200 times harder for every single person involved in that transaction.

and then you’ve come on here to boast about it.. how embarrassing for you.

Scottishdreams1991 · 18/06/2024 20:00

Tesco whoosh driver's have too put your dob into the device before taken a photo. Maybe similar

PiggieWig · 18/06/2024 20:00

They have to enter it into their little console don’t they? You can just make something up as long as it’s over 18.

Peonies12 · 18/06/2024 20:08

crochetmylifeaway · 18/06/2024 19:47

They have to input a date of birth on the handheld to authorise the delivery of alcohol. If he didn't then he would be in a lot of trouble and could even lose his job. YABVVVU

This. They’re just doing their job.

And are therefore unimpeachable, incorruptible paragons of virtue.

Delivering for Amazon & you have to ask it has to match what's on the system and with the person who placed the order for alcohol, certain Chemicals, tobacco products/vapes & sharp tools/knives.
Even when we can see the persons 100% old enough it's not worth losing your job over.

This is what I don’t understand if you’re sure the person is over the age that person is hardly going to call your manager and tell them they weren’t ID’d

Roseyjane · 18/06/2024 21:12

Huh? Why would you refuse your date of birth? He will need to enter the data. He’s not asking so he can judge you. What a silly thing to refuse to do. I’m sure he guessed you were in your sixties or whatever, blokes got eyes.

Muffin101 · 18/06/2024 21:14

Oh how daft, what a fool you made of yourself!

SonicTheHodgeheg · 18/06/2024 21:20

Did you order any tin foil with your shopping ?

Your grocery delivery driver has probably gone through more checks than people at the polling station. The delivery person isn’t trying to get your details for lols - the handheld thing probably requires a DOB for tick box ticking purposes

Actually no, anyone can apply. If it's your Amazon delivery drivers day off he might be working at your polling station

Damnloginpopup · 18/06/2024 21:22

Dick move. Hope they close your delivery account.

My parents were polling clerks. Neither of them had ever worked for the government Confused

Which supermarket was it? I've never been asked for a DoB in decades of supermarket deliveries (nor in a supermarket) and if you had government backed ID as evidence of "over 18" then its a ridiculous.

I would ask them why they require the handover of personally identifying info on the doorstep when all they are required to do is best endeavours to ensure the person is adult for alcohol. In particular why they require it when most supermarkets do not.

The complacency on the thread to handing over key identifying information without legitimate justification is depressing.

Ihateslugs · 18/06/2024 21:39

I order gin or wine almost every delivery and I’ve never been asked for ID or my DoB by Tesco. Yes, I’m over 60 and do look it but I was a lot younger when I first starting having deliveries - as soon as the system was in place, I used it!

Tesco have just started asking me to sign on a little machine using my finger but not with every delivery, it might be those with alcohol, I’ll have to check. I can barely see the screen without my reading glasses and have “fat fingers” so my signature is totally unreadable but that does not seem to matter.

This.

If you don’t like company policy, go to the shop and buy it in person yourself.
