To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

@Catza I don't know why it's the driver's job to ask 60 year olds. Just because someone is on NMW doesn't mean they lack the intelligence to challenge their employers on this.

The OP should take this up with the Head Office, that is a good suggestion. Get someone to explain the pointlessness of it all.

Older people must really roll their eyes at the stupidity of trying to navigate modern life sometimes. Computer Says No culture.

It's the drivers job because their employer told them this. It is literally part of their job duties. It has nothing to do with intelligence. I sometimes think that parts of my job are stupid - I work for the NHS and every time I need to fill up yet another useless form with duplicate details I want to pull my hair out. But it is my job requirement which is in place to comply with the law. I am sure most nursery teachers think it is absolutely a waste of time to produce written reports for 3 year-olds' and they would much rather be teaching them than doing a pointless copy and paste exercise to appease an anxious parent or a government inspector. But they do it because it is part of their job.
Tell me how many times you challenged your employer on some useless crap you have to do at work?

Elphamouche · 19/06/2024 09:17

You are ridiculous. What does it matter?! 😂.

Also, since when were government officials trustworthy? And you do realise anyone can work at a polling station.

GingerPirate · 19/06/2024 09:21

Yes, this is rubbish.
I'm from another country where this wouldn't be allowed, and, for example, "a quick shop check" wouldn't be allowed either, unless police present atm.
However, it really depends how much fuss you are prepared to get through, how much you want that shopping and the wine.
Simple.
I'm from the Czech Republic btw.

Loads of times. Normally around pointless spreadsheets that no one reads. I was made redundant from my previous job so maybe employers don't like being challenged too much. Or I'm just unlikeable. Who knows.

@LadyLapsang the consensus on this thread is that meh rules is rules. So up to you whether you play along with this nonsense - and provide a fake DoB - or just shop in-store at a different retailer.

I'll continue to call out bollocks like this but I appreciate I'm fighting a losing battle. Rules is rules. Even though no one ever has met a 17 year old who looks 60.

Originalusername89 · 19/06/2024 09:45

It's exactly the same as when they ask for ID in the store at the till. They wouldn't accept an oyster card there either. For all he knows you might have been a mystery shopper checking for compliance. He's just doing his job why make it more difficult for him

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

This is not at all true.

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 19/06/2024 11:00

@LadyLapsang

FFS, your I.D. will have your date of birth on it. What a ridiculous amount of fuss over nothing!

Also, you're in your 60s, and will look in your 60s (coz why wouldn't you?!) Confused

So why is anyone even asking you for I.D. for anything?!

PollyPeachum · 19/06/2024 11:00

We are being told to not give data away, it is not the one item but the unscrupulous collect little details from many different sources to clone a complete ID of a person.

I am a delivery driver. Why is it our problem that the customer doesn't want to comply with the terms and conditions.? No skin off our nose.

As I used to explain to troublesome customers, I've got 3 minutes door to door. I've been here for ten minutes, trying to explain to you and I'll be late for all the following ones, as well as getting home later than I wanted to.

But no, I was a jobsworth cunt who just wanted to make people's lives a misery etc.

JuiceBoxJuggler · 19/06/2024 11:18

And that makes all of them honest? Oh OP, if only.

(And before anyone starts, DW was a Civil Servant and one DD is a Local Govt. Officer.)

I was just explaining how it is for delivery drivers.

Bearwithgreenhair · 19/06/2024 11:41

Jesus, what does it matter? What 'fraud' will he commit with random woman's DOB? Talk about paranoid. The driver won't care, I'm pretty sure he, like you, would be far happier if he wouldn't have to ask all these pointless details and could just hand the goods to you. But it's a box ticking exercise, he needs the date for his tablet.

It's not the age thing either, I'm 36 and look thereabouts, definitely not below 25. Deliveroo, Amazon, Uber Eats, Tesco Whoosh always ask it. Then quickly key it in their tablet without a thought and run for the next delivery. They really don't care how old you are.

See id just say " ok you don't want your stuff then" and mark as customer refused delivery

If it's a pointless box ticking exercise can the driver not just enter some random date themselves and save them the bother of asking the customer?

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:40

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

But this wasn't in a supermarket, so why waste our - and your - time mentioning it ?

Riversideandrelax · 19/06/2024 13:36

Catza · 19/06/2024 08:00

Why is this a driver’s job? Why a person on minimum wage should risk their job for you? You don’t like the policy, YOU should be the one questioning it. Not with the driver but with the corporate office.

Exactly.

Notchangingnameagain · 19/06/2024 13:50

Jesus.

They have to enter your DOB into their phone to confirm 18+ for delivery of alcohol/tobacco/knives. Go to the shop next time.

SatinHeart · 19/06/2024 13:55

I've got a fake DOB that I use for things like amazon deliveries and websites where my actual DOB doesn't matter. I think of it as being a bit like the King's official birthday.

Every year the stack of junk emails I get on my fake birthday reminds me how many times I've had to use it!

Just hope the driver doesn't ask for proof. As they are trained to.

Which supermarket was it? I've never been asked for a DoB in decades of supermarket deliveries (nor in a supermarket) and if you had government backed ID as evidence of "over 18" then its a ridiculous.

I would ask them why they require the handover of personally identifying info on the doorstep when all they are required to do is best endeavours to ensure the person is adult for alcohol. In particular why they require it when most supermarkets do not.

The complacency on the thread to handing over key identifying information without legitimate justification is depressing.

Due to the op, the poor employees have to mess around picking, packing and delivering her shopping that includes age restricted products. They then had to take all of her shopping back, unpack and put it all back.
Now you're suggesting to add to the mess she has already caused, she needs to call the supermarket to ask why they need a date of birth for age restricted items?
The clue is in age restricted e.g. alcohol?
It doesn't matter if you're old enough, it's age restricted, the company has asked delivery drivers to confirm the date of birth.

How embarrassing. If I behaved like this, I'd be having a word with myself and driving myself to do my shopping so I can't inconvenience people anymore than I already had.
Incredibly entitled.

SerendipityJane · 19/06/2024 14:45

the company has asked delivery drivers to confirm the date of birth.

Because it will be the driver who is criminally liable if the recipient is underage.

Because someone would be bound to email Head Office saying ‘they didn’t ask for my DOB’ and then they would be sacked.
