I mean WTAF? (Source Telegraph) Ovarian Cancer Action has actually stated this.Would be bad enough generally ,but I am undergoing Treatment for this ATM, and just think it sounds ludicrous .Have been in touch with them before now and they seemed quite helpful .Feel a bit affronted ! AIBU they can say what they think,YANBU They should stick to the facts and not upset people already ill?

No they cannot

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/06/2024 13:29

I think what they mean is trans-men can get Ovarian Cancer.

Nanny0gg · 10/06/2024 13:30

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/06/2024 13:29

I think what they mean is trans-men can get Ovarian Cancer.

So in other words... women

TheKeatingFive · 10/06/2024 13:30

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/06/2024 13:29

I think what they mean is trans-men can get Ovarian Cancer.

And trans men are women.

This isn't necessarily understood by the general population. Clarity of language matters.

notgettinganyyounger · 10/06/2024 13:30

If they are trans men with ovarian cancer, surely they are still women

Witchcraftandhokum · 10/06/2024 13:32

I'm certainly not here for a debate, I was just clarifying what they mean.

MagnetCarHair · 10/06/2024 13:32

I'm sorry, op. It must be distressing to be live with the riskiest of cancers and then see it dressed up in the language of gender nonsense.

smallchange · 10/06/2024 13:33

What a shame they didn't just put out a tweet saying "Transmen! Remember, if you still have your ovaries, you can still get ovarian cancer."

That would have been helpful to a minority population, some of whom might need that occasional reminder that you can't identify out of your biology.

Less virtue signalling though. Fewer brownie points. Twats.

You are right. All transmen even without ovarian cancer are women. However much they might hate the fact, it is a fact.

If their meaning needed clarified then their communication was poor, which isn't great from an organisation who claimed to be "awareness raising".

lucindasspunkyfunkyvoice · 10/06/2024 13:34

Men with ovaries can get it

Biological females

hydriotaphia · 10/06/2024 13:34

Yes, saying "anyone with ovaries" or "people with ovaries" would be a less confusing way of phrasing this. However, people do get offended even with that wording so I do feel for charities trying to get a public health message out.

Aperolschitts · 10/06/2024 13:35

This was the post I saw

Men can get Ovarian Cancer !

All they need to do is stick to the biological facts and the language that reflects that. It's not difficult at all.

DOBARDAN · 10/06/2024 13:37

Sorry you're going through this health issue, I wish you all the best with your treatment. As you say, they should stick to biological facts and stop misleading/confusing people, it isn't fair at the best of times, but when you're going through treatment for ovarian cancer it must be very upsetting. I wish they would consider how women feel on reading such nonsense. I'm old enough to know better but much younger people or anyone whose first language isn't English must be very confused. Clarity of facts is needed, especially in a medical setting.

hydriotaphia · 10/06/2024 13:38

@TheKeatingFive Yes, of course - but my point is you do get idiots who see a post that says "people with ovaries" and get all faux-offended over it.

Theydontknowaboutus · 10/06/2024 13:38

I agree op. And 'anyone with ovaries' is hardly clear to anyone whose first language is not English or has no understanding of biology.

henlake7 · 10/06/2024 13:39

well, the post seems alot clearer! I dont think its that hard to understand.
Ive nursed several trans men in my job and TBH Ive never thought of any one of them as women....
they've all just looked and sounded like men....but with lady parts tucked away!

Theydontknowaboutus · 10/06/2024 13:40

I am not 'faux offended' by people with ovaries - I am genuinely offended. It obfuscates language plus I object to being known through my body parts.

AlisonDonut · 10/06/2024 13:40

As schools aren't now allowed to refer to 'girls' or 'boys', how on earth are any girls going to ever know whether they have a cervix or not?

Screamingabdabz · 10/06/2024 13:42

”Men” cannot get ovarian cancer. That’s a blatent bias toward a belief that people can change sex when they can’t. No one actually truly believes this so I struggle to come to terms with this being taking seriously, especially by the NHS. It’s outrageous.

MikeRafone · 10/06/2024 13:42

So a woman being a man isn’t really a man I’d they get ovarian cancer

jyst like a man being a woman and getting prostrate cancer isn’t actually a woman

if they had changed sex they’d not be getting cancer of organs they don’t have as the opposite sex

Screamingabdabz · 10/06/2024 13:43

hydriotaphia · 10/06/2024 13:38

There is no ‘faux’ about it. It is downright offensive because it’s dehumanising.

mindutopia · 10/06/2024 13:47

You can have ovaries if you were born with ambiguous genitalia (are intersex), so I can't see why someone who was raised as a boy (but who technically has ovaries) and would consider themselves a man couldn't get ovarian cancer. A surprising number of people are intersex (I think it's 1 in 1000 babies born?) so you probably know someone who this might apply to.

dottiedodah · 10/06/2024 13:47

DOBARDAN Thank you .yes it is upsetting ,as you say if they would think first it would be helpful!I thought I may be being unreasonable as only started chemo a month ago ,and its all been a shock as Hystorectomy in Feb and thought they had cleared it!.Alas some remaining
