I mean WTAF? (Source Telegraph) Ovarian Cancer Action has actually stated this.Would be bad enough generally ,but I am undergoing Treatment for this ATM, and just think it sounds ludicrous .Have been in touch with them before now and they seemed quite helpful .Feel a bit affronted ! AIBU they can say what they think,YANBU They should stick to the facts and not upset people already ill?

Men have testicles. Men who think they're women might claim to have ovaries. So no, men cannot get ovarian cancer. What an absolute kick in the teeth to sufferers and survivors. Cases of intersex/hermaphrodite are far too rare to even factor in. I'm sorry if that offends anyone on here, but chromosomes don't change. I wish you all the best with your treatment and a full, speedy recovery.

You can have ovaries if you were born with ambiguous genitalia (are intersex), so I can't see why someone who was raised as a boy (but who technically has ovaries) and would consider themselves a man couldn't get ovarian cancer. A surprising number of people are intersex (I think it's 1 in 1000 babies born?) so you probably know someone who this might apply to.

The solution to this gender woo. Don’t make any charitable donations for a period of time. They will soon start noticing when they can’t pay their over inflated salaries to write this stuff

GelatoPistacchio · 10/06/2024 17:03

If they hadn't used the click bait question of can men get ovarian cancer, then the post would have been really useful and informative.

I don't know if everyone would think about their paternal line when it comes to BRCA genes — it's more common to think about whether mum, grandma and maternal aunties had it.

In an odd way it has made me more aware of something I hadn't thought about before. I'm not sure controversy is the best healthcare marketing technique though!

All the best during your treatment OP

Unless they are biological females, they cannot get Ovarian cancer.

This was the post I saw

So they haven’t actually said that men can get ovarian cancer, but that anyone with an ovary can.

so in many ways, they’ve dodged answering the question, by giving a reply to a different question. Ie, who can get ovarian cancer.

(although I don’t like the reply, because they haven’t actually answered the question, which is ‘no’)

TheKeatingFive · 10/06/2024 17:14

My paternal aunt died of breast cancer in her 40s and I have often wondered this.

Did you read the post at all or just decide to come marching in here and be all offended on someone else's behalf about something that wasn't actually said?

She's not complaining about other people with cancer, she's not complaining about any individual at all. She's complaining about a charity's obfuscation of language when explaining something that is actually very simple in order to pander to a tiny minority of the population. HTH.

Also as a cancer survivor myself, cancer doesn't actually switch off our ability to give a shit about things that are smaller than cancer. HTH too.

EclairsAndDoughnuts · 10/06/2024 17:19

Men cannot get ovarian cancer. Women-including those who want to believe that they are a man-can.

Any woman who thinks she can call herself Arthur and that this now means that she cannot get ovarian cancer should really not be leaving the house without her mother.

Catnipcupcakes · 10/06/2024 17:24

According to my local NHS trust, who cannot under any circumstances use the word woman lest it upsets somebody, the information leaflet calls women “people with ovaries’. The cervical and breast cancer leaflets refer to ‘people with breasts’ and ‘people with a cervix’.

Scotland, of course.

HRTQueen · 10/06/2024 17:31

what's wrong with woman and woman who identify differently

this is factually correct without taking the word woman out

Its very important to keep the word women in our language when you are referring to what 99% of females. Woman have had to fight for the right for our medical needs to be taken seriously (along with all our other hard won fights)

Rubyupbeat · 10/06/2024 17:47

They should stipulate 'Trans men with ovaries' (yes, Women).
I think its insulting to those women going through treatment, those that have lost loved one through this insidious disease and those getting ovaries removed to prevent the disease!

dottiedodah · 10/06/2024 17:57

GelattoPistacchhio Thank you .It is nice people are reaching out to me.Fairly new diagnosis TBH. (Tree is fine LOL!) This charity was one I reached out to so a little put out by their thoughts TBH!

I think what they mean is trans-men can get Ovarian Cancer.

So that’s a woman then

Not everyone is aware that men can get breast cancer. Let’s not confuse matters by claiming that men can get ovarian cancer.

That's quite a nice example of the problem with shitting about with definitions:

Men can get breast cancer.
Here you see the use of the word "men" to mean... men. An important bit of men's public health messaging - lumps in your moobs/armpits/chest area shouldn't be ignored. Yes, the vast majority of the time it happens to women, but if you're a man then you should be aware too.

Men can get ovarian cancer.
Here you see the use of the word "men" to mean... women. Not relevant to men's public health messaging. You need to know the code and realise that it means the group of men who are actually female. If you're the cock & balls variety then it's not going to happen to you (but do check those balls).

How about charities target the population they're aiming at without this needless obfuscation? Pride month is a great month for an ovarian cancer campaign aimed at transmen. Or a testicular cancer campaign aimed at transwomen. Or a trans health campaign aimed at both which could cover the risks of certain types of cancer, tucking, binding, things to watch out for if you're taking opposite sex hormones, mental health etc, etc. You know, actually useful and not just for points.

Excellent point

LakeTiticaca · 10/06/2024 19:09

Anyone in possession of ovaries is female

The end

AstonMartha · 10/06/2024 19:31

@ditalini great post.

Getonwitit · 10/06/2024 20:54

Men don't have ovaries therefore can't develop ovarian cancer. It really is that simple. Anything else is a lie.

I actually think that's rather cleverly done. By expressing it this way they're not actually saying "men can have ovaries" but they're acknowledging that there will be people who think they can.
