I mean WTAF? (Source Telegraph) Ovarian Cancer Action has actually stated this.Would be bad enough generally ,but I am undergoing Treatment for this ATM, and just think it sounds ludicrous .Have been in touch with them before now and they seemed quite helpful .Feel a bit affronted ! AIBU they can say what they think,YANBU They should stick to the facts and not upset people already ill?

Out of curiosity, looked at another Ovarian website cancer site, Ovarian.org.uk.

Their answer to the same question.

“Can men get ovarian cancer?
Only those born with a female reproductive system can develop ovarian cancer. This includes people assigned female at birth, but are now living as a male, or transgender males who have had their ovaries removed. Anyone born with ovaries should be symptom aware and act on any concerns they have.”

Bibi12 · 10/06/2024 22:07

Why when it comes to male issues they are still allowed to use "men", "male " etc but when it comes to women it's "people with ovaries ". Why there is double standard?

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 10/06/2024 22:38

It's funny isn't it - I recently snapped a photo of a picture from a prostate cancer charity. They used the word man or men about 5 times on the one poster. Women not once.

Place it side by side with a poster about uterine cancer, and all of a sudden everyone is a they not a her, men can get cancer of the uterus and we have to be very mindful of our language.

It's telling. And infuriating.

This is quite good wording.
Most people will know if it applies to them, but it's not acting like there's no difference between the sexes.

Yeah but what's the reasoning behind it? Why men are men while women are "people with ovaries "? I'm genuinely curious.

I think it's because transactivists want to break the link between biology and sex and link it more to gender identity.
Women are much more of a pushover kinder so that's the first wall to break.
Sounds machiavellian but there are billionaire funded think tanks paying full time salaries and professional advice to strategise this!
Your daughters troubled enby friend who deserves kindness and compassion, is not the one driving this, that for sure.

Willyoujustbequiet · 10/06/2024 23:05

Only females can get ovarian cancer.

People with ovaries = women

MarmitePizza · 10/06/2024 23:10

Theydontknowaboutus · 10/06/2024 13:38

I agree op. And 'anyone with ovaries' is hardly clear to anyone whose first language is not English or has no understanding of biology.

Are there really many people who don’t know what “ovaries” are, but do know what “ovarian cancer” is?

As far as the OP is concerned though, of course this is a load of bullshit. Only women get ovarian cancer.

TheKeatingFive · 10/06/2024 23:12

Quite. She is being used, very cynically, to further these people's ends.

cherish123 · 10/06/2024 23:14

?
No they can't. Men don't have ovaries.

Linlithgow · 10/06/2024 23:23

smallchange · 10/06/2024 13:33

What a shame they didn't just put out a tweet saying "Transmen! Remember, if you still have your ovaries, you can still get ovarian cancer."

That would have been helpful to a minority population, some of whom might need that occasional reminder that you can't identify out of your biology.

Less virtue signalling though. Fewer brownie points. Twats.

What a worrying world where we need to actually state this 😵‍💫

HumerousHumous · 10/06/2024 23:30

The very fact that their X/Twitter feed does not allow comments on this post stating that men can get ovarian cancer, (but does allow comments on other posts) says to me that they KNOW that their terminology is controversial, will upset women and is a complete nonsense.

Persianpuss · 10/06/2024 23:41

How is this "good wording"? It says "transgender males who have had their ovaries removed". A transgender MALE is a transwoman. MALE = XY chromosomes. MALEs cannot have ovaries in the first place. It's a total nonsense.

It's like those "opposite" games you used to play as a child where everyone says the opposite of what they really mean, but some people are playing the game and some aren't so no one has a clue anyone if yes means yes or yes means no.

I think it's pretty good. Not the way I'd do it. But in this climate its conveying information without totally disregarding women - note, it's just an answer to a question on the long page of FAQs. Haven't seen the rest of the site butif it's sensible and this is the one bit of genderwoo clearly signposted then - that's OK.
Their aim should be to reduce rates of ovarian cancer. So they do have to target every demographic.

Maybe I'm just beaten down

Persianpuss · 11/06/2024 00:15

You think males have ovaries?

CanadianJohn · 11/06/2024 00:22

It's probably worse over here. Our local health authority was advising "people with a prostate" to have a PSA test for prostate cancer.

Persianpuss · 11/06/2024 00:26

I've heard that Canada is one of the worst places for this. But at least the madness is sexually equal, in the UK this nonsense only happens when it comes to the word "women". Men's products and cancer campaigns keep the word men.

Enofthelinefinally · 11/06/2024 00:29

mindutopia · 10/06/2024 13:47

You can have ovaries if you were born with ambiguous genitalia (are intersex), so I can't see why someone who was raised as a boy (but who technically has ovaries) and would consider themselves a man couldn't get ovarian cancer. A surprising number of people are intersex (I think it's 1 in 1000 babies born?) so you probably know someone who this might apply to.

Honestly. Do people really still believe this nonsense?

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2024 00:34

Friend at school wrote 'the penis enters the anus' on her GCSE science paper and got laughed at.

I'm not sure this type of shit would help.

Only women have ovaries. Only females.

Let's acknowledge that and save lives.

FluentRubyDog · 11/06/2024 00:37

Well, if we're going to get technical, in true hermaphroditism there is both ovarian and testicular tissue present. Now, if such a person looks like a male and never suspects the presence of ovarian tissue, it is easy to see how this can become lethaly advanced before detection, especially as the tissue would be subject to all the wrong hormones, so more prone to carcinogenesis.

Of course, we're talking about 1 in 2000 people here, but still...

Enofthelinefinally · 11/06/2024 00:29

Well, it's a medical fact that 1 in 2000 babies are born as a hermaphrodite.

FluentRubyDog · 11/06/2024 00:40

No it's not.
No one is a hermaphrodite - the definition is someone with a functional set of both gonads.

There are babies born with disorders of sexual development. They might have residual tissue of the other gonad. They might have a slight abnormality of physiology -in boys, the urethra might open slightly up the shaft rather than at the tip. There might be chromosomal disorders. But crucially, the majority these DSDs are sex dependent.
DSDs are common. That doesn't negate the categories of male and female.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this.
I had a hysterectomy 4 weeks ago and I was on ward with ladies like you, one had had to have a total hysterectomy, plus a few other bits removed… very poorly lady and she’s been blasted with chemo while open on the operating table (she said) how awful!
I can not imagine where charities are coming from asking this question!! I know it’s pride month but this is political correctness gone ape shit!! It’s utter bat shit! Once again the world doesn’t care about offending women, it’s more concerned with whether it’s offending the trans community!
