To think that people who spend £45 on a Stanley cup need their heads examined?

More specifically for a primary aged child who is likely to lose or damage the cup? £45? Absolute madness. Some parents just can’t seem to see their kids go without the latest trend.

I don't know how us old gits survived the 80s and 90s without dying from dehydration.

Itllfalloff · 07/06/2024 14:06

I also think it’s a bit childish for adults to be drinking through a straw in those giant cups but all my USA family suck away happily….

We drank from our out door tap, and from nanna and grandads garden hose 😀

Some people spend thousands on sports/music tickets or going out for a meal. At least you can use this every day!

I wouldn’t get one as I’d find it bulky to carry about, but I wouldn’t judge someone with one. I spend money on lots of things others would think are frivolous.

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 07/06/2024 14:09

Beats paying for plastic water bottles.

I have a Frank Green - it's amazing. 1200ml capacity. I love it.

Aposterhasnoname · 07/06/2024 14:10

WellI wouldn’t buy one myself, but if that’s what people want to spend their money on, good for them. I’m sure theres things you spend money on OP that other people would think was crackers.

funinthesun19 · 07/06/2024 14:10

I agree people can spend their money on whatever they like. If they want to spend £45 on an ugly cup they can do. 😄

Upallnight2 · 07/06/2024 14:12

I prefer yetis! We have a couple and they're great for taking out hot drinks. I'm not really a fan of really cold drinks. I wouldn't but one for my primary ages child but I would by something of equal value if it's something that he really wanted.. so each to theor own really

£45 for something that's supposed to last at least 10 years is an absolute bargain. DD spends £45 on foundation that lasts 2 months, a friend spends £45 on take out once a week. I have 2 cheap knock offs and they're great. Don't leak and keep my drink cold.

Stanley cups are supposed to be a buy once purchase. Much more eco friendly than buying bottled water when you're out.

I've probably spent over £45 on shitty supermarket water bottles for my son that alway leak over the last 5 years thinking about it 🙄

Oh they're pretty, hadn't heard of them

CammyChameleon · 07/06/2024 14:27

It's their money, they can spend it how they want. I've looked at some of the cheap versions - I do think they look nice - but as I walk rather than drive, I appreciate something that can be closed properly and chucked in a bag.

@Elodea , I do wonder if part of the appeal is making yourself look "teeny-tiny" due to an oversized accessory, sort of like when oversized handbags were a big thing? No judgement, I loved my oversized bag for just that reason!

MaryBeardsShoes · 07/06/2024 14:29

I always thought this, but then I saw someone put a margarita (or several, I suppose) in one and take it out on a walk so my mind has been changed.

Ripleysgameface · 07/06/2024 14:30

I have a £3.50 dupe from The Range. I love it so so much and use it every day.
I can't see how the £45 one would be any better.
I had some ice and water in mine recently on a day out. There was still ice in it the next day when I washed it out.

Pigeonqueen · 07/06/2024 14:33

I really want one. But I think I’m just suckered into it all via the shiny happy people on Instagram who have one 🙈🤣 There are tons of dupes on Amazon that have excellent reviews and are probably just as good for a fraction of the price.

I bought my 3 kids one each for Christmas, they were £12 from tiktok shop, genuine Stanley's. I wouldn't have paid £45 though. To be fair they still use them every single day 6 months on

Yeah…….. they’re not real Stanley’s.

There are fakes everywhere.

thanKyouaIMee · 07/06/2024 14:35

@Zonder

The original ones did leak if not kept up right (I've got some that are a good few years old!) the newer ones have little plastic seals around the straws + with a straw topper they don't leak when tipped about.

dreamstates · 07/06/2024 14:35

As always with these things they start off cool. Then before you know it certain types are using it. And customising them with pink diamanté lids and LV logo and leather boot. It's a bit of a weird one as it's just a water bottle.

It's the same as Burberry.

I hate the need to follow like sheep. People love to be sheep though.

Fulshaw · 07/06/2024 14:38

I don’t object to people buying them but I don’t really get the point of them over and above any other water bottle or travel mug. Plus they’re so huge! Must be really unwieldy to carry around all day.

whataloadofhotair · 07/06/2024 14:38

Would everyone saying people can spend their money however they want also have the same view on school fees? There seems to be a lot of spite against parents who pay school fees and yet someone can't say you need your head examined for paying £45 on a water bottle???

Caspianberg · 07/06/2024 14:39

Stanley are great. But they sell all sorts not just massive water cups.

We have the Stanley trigger thermos cups. Excellent. They only hold 250-300ml so a normal hot drink size. They fit in my bag easily, or car cup, or pram. Saved dh and I so much money and time the last 4 years since we bought. We often take Ds out now for walks or on bike, before in pram and would be no where open to get hot drink ( we live remote).
Also take travelling, far safer getting coffee shop to put drink in this and use on plane/ train, than a paper cup spilling hot liquid over toddler

buffyslayer · 07/06/2024 14:40

I don't get taking it out on a walk. Doesn't it get annoying carrying it?

EnglishBluebell · 07/06/2024 14:43

I have one and it's fantastic. Also I think you might be overlooking the fact that it has a LIFETIME warranty. So if it fails in 10 years time you get a brand new one. So £45 and you've got one for life.
Also, it keeps your drink chilled for about 18 hours.

EnglishBluebell · 07/06/2024 14:45

Mercurial123 · 07/06/2024 12:57

It was a fleeting trend. People have moved on. Influencer Insanity did a good commentary on YouTube a few months ago. It's extremely ugly and overpriced.

Well no it's not. They're a very long established and loved brand in the US for decades and these cups have been popular over there for a long time

I don't know how us old gits survived the 80s and 90s without dying from dehydration.

And still somehow managing fine without carrying water around everywhere. Trends come and go, am obsession with "hydration" is a current one, no science behind it at all, just a fad. Pretty harmless though.
