So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

lol.

JellyNump · 06/04/2008 19:01

That is how rich people are rich. I work in a travel agency and its always the rich people who ask for discounts etc...would you go to Sainsbury and ask for a discount on a loaf of bread?

TurkeyLurkey · 06/04/2008 19:02

40p! What a pair of tight wads. An extra quid wouldn't have hurt them. I used to be a waitress and you get taxed extra on the tips the tax office reckon you earn.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:02

you seem to spend a lot of time noticing other diner's accessories/bag etc. why?

so what if someone leaves a minimum tip- what has it got to do with you?

are you lady bleeding bountiful because you leave a tip

it is mean to stereotype because some one appears to have consumer durables, just as it is wrong to stereotype is people don't have consumer durables

they could be fabulous nurturing people altruistic people - you don't seem to want to give them a chance because they seem prosperous

envy is a terrible thing

i hope you don't pass such judgemental values on to your children

i genuinely don't care what clothes/accessories folk have and i don't particularly notice. i only recognise a brand if i have it, or it is particularly popular

RubySlippers · 06/04/2008 19:03

you seem to be jumping to a lot of conclusions

they could have been out in their "sunday best" also having a treat

WorzselMummage · 06/04/2008 19:04

rich people are rich cos they are normally tight bastards !

You sound a tad envious

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 19:05

My problem is not them being rich.

My problem is them being very obviously wealthy and thinking its ok to leave a 40p tip.

It is intertwined, not exclusive.

girlfrommars · 06/04/2008 19:06

At a place with waitress/waiter service you should tip a minimum of 10% unless the service is crappy.

They can spend their cash on 'it' bags or a second home or whatever else they might desire - they've earnt it- but to praise the service and not tip properly is cheap.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 06/04/2008 19:06

I can understand your rant, I would have thought them a bit tight fisted too. But its their money to do what they like with.

FranSanDisco · 06/04/2008 19:07

They were insulting and ignorant. What's the girl's age got to do with the service. I always wonder how such stupid people have earned their money but I know it doesn't work like that . I remember a woman in Kenya boasting about her wonderful life style and then haggling over a carved elephant with the oldest man in the world who lived in a shack. She gave him about £2.00 in the end and I gave her a wide berth for the rest of the holiday. To answer your question yanbu to be disgusted at a 40p tip.

YAB (V) U I'm afraid....

You have no idea of their situation and you are judging them by your own standards..

I know loads of people who don't tip or tip 'low' and it has no relation on their behaviour elsewhere.

Were you very bored??

they can spend their money on whatever they want

how do you know that last time they visited they didn't leave a bigger tip?

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:09

this is just inverted snobbery- for example had the post read...

i hate people in cheap clothes, vinyl bags, no home ownership. then that would probably evoke a strong reaction. rightly so

sad to be so vitriolic about strangers, who did not even engage with you, they don't deserve your bile

PeachesMcLean · 06/04/2008 19:11

And how do you know it was a £800 Chloe bag? Have you been checking out "pointless crap" in the magazines? I think a little bit of envy.

YABVU to be so ranty about it. Do you always leave a tip in a cafe? I know I don't and I don't suspect I'm alone.

FranSanDisco · 06/04/2008 19:11

To be fair they don't know about her bile - unless they read this.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:12

Yes but unfortunately she shared her --rant- bile
