So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

oh well, you are much less judgemental than me dal.
I met a lady at a party, I just though, that " I'm not sure that I like you that much and suspect that I have litttle in common with you".
And I didn't question that judgement later either. I just assumed thta I was right in my judgement.

dal21 · 07/04/2008 17:06

i disagree - i am just as much judgemental, but i am coming to the conclusion that nowadays, intial impressions dont count for much.

Someone can be wearning top to toe designer gear, doesnt mean they are wealthy. They may be. They may also be thousands in debt and on the verge of declaring bankruptcy.

When I was expecting DS, I met 2 mums due a similar time to me. My first impression was that one mum was so lovely, very sweet and we would become great friends. The other was aloof, arrogant and i wouldnt really see eye to eye with her.

7 months on, guess what? The aloof and arrogant was actually shy and reserved. Is a lovely person - supportive, funny, down to earth and self depreciating. And we see each other tons. The sweet and lovely one is still sweet and lovely - when she needs something. Beyond that I never hear anything from her.

Of course I form initial judgements. If they are about people I am going to see again, then I give it time to see whether I am wrong or right. When it is a total random who I will never see again - I have neither the time nor energy to think about them again. I honestly couldnt care less.

dal21 · 07/04/2008 17:08

just as judgemental even. sorry. feeding DS who is happily hiccuping away after his lamb hotpot.

There might have been a refusenik 2 foot turd in the loo, no loo paper and no soap.

dal21 · 07/04/2008 17:31

LOL swedes. I think you killed the thread.

Janos · 07/04/2008 18:08

Well I just got back from the supermarket and it was full of proles! No nice biscuits for me, I shall have to make do with value range rich tea.

So unfair!

scottishmummy · 07/04/2008 18:21

edam · 07/04/2008 18:25

Why, thank you, tiny lady. Maybe the 'ooh, it's terrible the stigma that rich people have to suffer' brigade would care to join in a few choruses of 'I am the man, the very fat man, who waters the workers' beer'.

Janos · 07/04/2008 18:32

That's just cruel scottishmummy.

Just don't go showing off your organic biscuits round Edinburgh way. That's all I'm saying

'twas the refusenik 2 foot turd in the loo- a positive loch Ness monster in the U-Bend that induced hilarity to this thread

Have never ever noticed what tip anyone left in a cafe/restaurant. Would not have a clue how much someone's handbag cost.

Judy1234 · 07/04/2008 20:18

Same here. Also just because people have a certain accent or clothes doesn't always mean they're well off and some people are against tipping.

Highlander · 07/04/2008 21:06

there used to be a place in Perth called the Pancake Place. Nor sure if they did waffles. Attracted hunter wellie types.

GentleOtter · 07/04/2008 21:13

That was me Highlander. Summer or winter the wellies stay on.

Kimi · 07/04/2008 21:27

Lauriefairycake, I love that waffle house, used to go there with a really good friend (it would have been her birthday today) and I was wondering if it was still there, could be a sign that I need to go for waffles soon
