So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

I must admit I sympathise with your close proximity to "brayers" in restaurants. It really does spoil the occasion - well it does for me. I would have been tempted to ask them to put a sock in it!!

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 20:24

It's not I swear.

None of your business

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 20:25

awww get away sounds like your ears were flapping and eyes on sticks to recall such ^detail*.concentrate on your dinner

jackeybauer · 06/04/2008 20:25

LaC - I only read a couple of pages of the thread - hence only responded to you on the wages point.
Just doesn't make sense why you should earn less just because you work part-time.

Still, clearly many businesses agree with you since that's the main reason why the pay gap between men and women is so big....

southeastastra · 06/04/2008 20:25

lol i visit st albans alot, it does seem to have got extra poncy lately

suzi2 · 06/04/2008 20:26

"Rich, successful people don't need protection from people who think they're idiots/selfish whatever."

Seriously? They're still human you know! So it's OK for me to slag off someone rich but no someone poor? That's screwed up.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 20:26

We as a couple give money to charity, we also tip. But in accordance with the service.

Money to charity.........................over the top tip,,,,,,,,,,

jackeybauer · 06/04/2008 20:29

suzi2 - no you're missing my point - I don't mean to one's face, I mean in the alternative universe that is mumsnet.

Some people (eg scottishmummy) are concerned that a poster is having a totally annonymous rant at strangers who will never know she ranted about them because she has expressed prejudicial thoughts about rich, successful people in general.

I just find it strange to be worried about other people's prejudices against rich, successful people.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 20:31

thanks for the namecheck but what are you on about?

Saveme · 06/04/2008 20:32

Laurie, I meant your attitude must be a wind-up, not the whole "sorry tale".

ItsNotYouItsMe · 06/04/2008 20:33

Harsh rant. YABU, it's none of your business what anyone else tips. Stop projecting onto the waitress, she might not have given a shit about the 40p tip. Your pity is kind of patronising.

bookkeeper · 06/04/2008 20:34

Oh god, do none of you ever feel that you really could do without overhearing incredibly well off people wittering on about their worries and troubles? If so, thank your lucky stars and stop giving laurie such a hard time.

Most of the time I'm sure laurie wouldn't give it a moment's thought, just like you perfect lot

NO I don't.

I have been fluid, I have been tight, I have never ever judged people based on their perceived income.

LaComtesse · 06/04/2008 20:37

Well I actually meant as she was probably a student hence her working part-time plus she probably gets 2x hourly rate for the Sunday shift. I'd expect the full-time waiting staff (if there are any) get the same whack bar any on a probationary period. Or is it wrong now to pay novice staff slightly lower wages as well?

FWIW, my company are not great payers but they do pay men and women equal amounts on the shop floor - they wouldn't dare do otherwise unless they wanted the union rep to die of apoplexy and/or re-enact the General Strike .

Pastarito · 06/04/2008 20:38

On balance, I think YABU. I wouldn't like the idea of people looking over at what I had tipped someone in a restaurant/cafe.
I do love that waffle house by the way. Yum.

Lulumama · 06/04/2008 20:38

i think hating people and calling them scum is totally over the top and uncalled for , over something liek this

don;t ask am i being unreasonable, if you don;t want anyone to say yes!!

bookkeeper · 06/04/2008 20:38

The clue's in the title.

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 20:38

I do like the response

I don't agree with you, that's quite different. Some agree with you, some agree with me.
