So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

Did anyone agree with you that they were scum then?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 06/04/2008 20:39

You are chippy, get over it.

LaComtesse · 06/04/2008 20:40

BK - I have and do sympathise with LFC. Doesn't mean to say that I have to agree with everything else written on here.

Saveme · 06/04/2008 20:40

and that it's ok to hate rich, braying people?

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 20:40

Nope, the 'scum' is me ranting.

Lots of people agree with the tip being unreasonable.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 20:40

Inverted snobbery is terrible

Saveme · 06/04/2008 20:43

But your post isn't about whether 40p is a reasonable tip is it? It's about whether it's ok to judge and hate people you perceive to be rich.

Tutter · 06/04/2008 20:44

you silly arse

Oliveoil · 06/04/2008 20:45

why is it ok to slag off rich, 'posh' people as though they are fair game because they are...the bastards how dare they...RICH?

who gives a shit really

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 20:45

No, as I've already explained I have a problem with them being overtly wealthy AND with leaving a bad tip.

Both together, intertwined. Have no problem with people just being wealthy.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 20:46

mind your bleedin beak

RubySlippers · 06/04/2008 20:47

you don't know they are wealthy - you are surmising!

the cottage could have been an inheritance and the bag a fake

RubySlippers · 06/04/2008 20:48

and so what if they could afford to leave a bigger tip

as i said eons ago on this thread, they can spend their money how they like

i don;t tip as a matter of routine for a cup of coffee and a waffle

LaComtesse · 06/04/2008 20:49

I don't even like waffles.

LaComtesse · 06/04/2008 20:53

This isn't America.

hecate · 06/04/2008 20:54

Why should people tip? It's just a way for the employer to pay shit wages. Get it made up in tips, save themselves some money. As far as I am concerned, I am paying for something and all the costs should be taken out of that. I see no reason why I should tip because I am encouraging stingy employers to persuade people to work for peanuts and rely on tips to make ends meet. I don't tip people for doing their job, I expect the cost of their wages to be included in my bill! I might give someone something extra if they do something above and beyond the call of duty. So, for example, I would not give a hairdresser a tip for cutting my hair - that's what I just paid forty fecking quid for! But I would give a waiter a tip if he went out to tesco and bought me something that wasn't on the menu!

msappropriate · 06/04/2008 20:55

"you don't know they are wealthy - you are surmising!

the cottage could have been an inheritance"

but inheriting is the way a lot of people become rich! especially a million pound cottage

lots of people have said that one is not obliged to tip. Well not there are lots of things people are not obliged to do; be polite, stand up for old people on a bus, say please and thank you etc etc but it does make the world a kinder fairer place if people do do these things.

It's absolutely fine to slag ANYONE off, provided the following rules are observed:

  1. The slaggee never finds out
  2. The slagger gets a load off and is emotionally lightened after the exercise

I would hate for my treat out to be spoiled by having to listen to some strangers discussing personal issues, and discussing money in public is intensely vulgar. OTOH, I wouldn't waste valuable time itemising their attire and checking their tip. So, for me, 50/50. HTH x

msappropriate · 06/04/2008 20:57

do you think that not tipping people who traditionally receive them will really make their employers pay them more?

expatinscotland · 06/04/2008 20:58

Mmmm, waffles!

I've yet to see a waffle house in Scotland.

Another thing I miss.

Too bad this baby likes to ferment the contents of my stomach every night for a few hours before I puke.
