So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

not over a mere waffle and disputed tip - nah. but cut broadband and we will all be out in our boden linen trousers and chloe bags

edam · 07/04/2008 14:58

Wealthy people can console themselves by counting their money, or buying whatever takes their fancy, though. I think there are more deserving cases for compassion!

I'll join la revolucion Dittany!

Meantime, I'm just off to beg at the supermarket, hopefully some kind second home owners will take pity and give me some of their leavings.

They better have some decent biscuits, is all I can say. Otherwise I'll suffocate them with my cheap plastic bags.

scottishmummy · 07/04/2008 15:02

you can peruse my biscuits any ole time

Kewcumber · 07/04/2008 15:06

besides they can't be that rich if they're eating at a waffle house...

scottishmummy · 07/04/2008 15:07

well having been gawped at, listened to, and derided and called scum dont reckon they will visit MN either

GrapefruitMoon · 07/04/2008 15:09

I'm not going to comment on the original OP but....

Years ago I was at a restaurant not to far from where this happened. It was a Beefeater/Harvester type of place but the building had previously been a posh country house. There was an old lady who was being very snooty about the fact that there were children there (quite well behaved iirc). I PMSL as it was not an upmarket restaurant at all but she obviously thought it was!

dal21 · 07/04/2008 15:09

I have come to the conclusion (after this thread and others) that in most mnetters eyes - it is a bigger crime in todays british society to be wealthy and successful than almost anything else it appears.

And being wealthy means that almost anything can be said about them and it is ok.

I am not wealthy by any means, but am thankful everyday for what I have got. And I hope to never judge anyone based on their income or the car they drive or the handbag they carry. Why would I? It has nothing to do with me.

Why do people think it is acceptable to attack people based on their perceived net worth? I genuinely want to know.

I disagree Dal- working class is the biggest crime - do you listen to the media/ politicians?

Sorry, I won't be crying into my beer over the
persercution of the wealthy

tinylady · 07/04/2008 15:37

I love edam and harpsi- they have made me smile

dal21 · 07/04/2008 15:38

i am talking about the views on mnet, not about those from politicians. the politicians will take from everyone, regardless of income.

tinylady · 07/04/2008 15:40

But that's still nonsense Dal
Did you read the amount of vile comments on here?
I have read them many, many times

Desiderata · 07/04/2008 15:40

So, dal, are you a rich braying type yourself, then?

Oblomov · 07/04/2008 15:43

Dal has missed my point. I don't care if they are rich or poor. I resented the fact that they were mean and tight fisted.

dal21 · 07/04/2008 15:46

no, am neither rich, nor braying.

I do not understand why people are so caustic towards one another, especially when money comes into it.

I know many nice people from all walks of life. And I have met many not so nice people from all walks of life.

People will never fit into just one stereo type based on their income.

dal21 · 07/04/2008 15:49

Havent missed anyones point.

Firstly. Tightfisted and mean because they didnt leave more than a 40p tip? Maybe they are mean and tightfisted. Maybe they arent. How can you come to that conclusion based on one example given on here?

And there are plenty of vile comments that are directed to this couple because they are perceived to be wealthy.

theBOD · 07/04/2008 15:57

how can you claim someone is tightfisted when they left more money than their bill came to?
they had no obligation to leave anything, yet now people are getting upset on behalf of waiting staff who are receiving tax-free money in addition to their salary where nothing is obliged, because it is not enough free-money.

LolaTheShowgirl · 07/04/2008 15:59

This is crazy! I know a lady who dresses head to foot in expensive looking designer clothes complete with latest Gucci handbag. Thing is, she probably hasn't paid over £5 for each item as they are very authentic looking copies from abroad which she gets for 5 euro per item!

LOL dittany- I hope she declares it

Oblomov · 07/04/2008 16:13

"They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was"
We all know that a tip is not obligatory.
But come on. It the service and food and everthing was good, you wouldn't leave 40 p ?
Then yes I think that is mean.
And I don't know anything about your clothes or wealth or anything.
So I think you are mean based on this one thing.
Am I judgemental ? We all form an impression very quickly.
Don't they say that people make up their minds within the first few minutes of viewing a house.
Are you totally non judgemental then ?

dal21 · 07/04/2008 16:20

There is a difference between forming an initial snap judgement (which, yes we all make) and posting about it a while later still thinking that your snap judgement is accurate.

Of course I would make an initial snap judgement, but I wouldn't assume that it was accurate. Or that it was my place to harp on about it later on.
