So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

So you don't mind that people judge you behind your back?

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 19:13

the waitress should have been "grateful" to receive a 40p tip Notjustmom ?

I live in one of the most expensive parts of the country where a mimimum wage job would not pay your bills, yes I think they should have paid a proper tip.

She was lovely and worked hard, more than her minimum wage £5.25 an hour deserved.

I do think people should tip more round here.

Oh come on...

You "hate them" and they are "total scum" because they left a 40p tip?

ROFL

You appear to have an unhealthy interest in other people's wealth. It's really none of your business.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:15

tipping is discretionary not mandatory

PeachesMcLean - was that to me? If so who judges me? I leave great tips and am perfect. Nothing to judge here - move along please.

mylovelymonster · 06/04/2008 19:16

I wouldn't know an £800 Chloe bag if it hit me across the head, but then the courier must have mislaid my May Vogue.......

JellyNump · 06/04/2008 19:16

I think its wrong to think that because someone is young they possibly wouldn't have the same bills as someone who is older. She might be lucky enough to afford to rent her own place but she would still have to pay the same bills and might have to work all the hours she can just to do so.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:17

laurie you say "I live in one of the most expensive parts of the country".Bitty boastful heh

Wisteria · 06/04/2008 19:17

...and she was young so would have been more appreciative anyway as she probably doesn't have a house, kids, bills etc....

£5.25 is not that bad - many people are on the same salary in different jobs and never get the opportunity to receive a tip.

She got something....I had loads of customers who didn't and loads who did when I was waitressing - it evens out and I never felt as though I deserved it. I did the job I was paid for and was wholly grateful to anyone who left anything.

I think you're being ridiculous I'm afraid.

IMO it would have been better to leave nothing than 40p.... 40p is insulting.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:19

insulting in what way?tipping is discretionary.

tinylady · 06/04/2008 19:19

not just mom
How mean spirited

Lauriefairycake · 06/04/2008 19:21

I'm not boasting about where I live, I said it was a treat for me to go out.

I live in a cheap place, in an expensive part of the country but because I know how expensive it is to live in this area I tip properly.

I can see why you are annoyed.I find it odd that they praised the service and left such a small tip. They shouldn't have bothered!

Doobydoo · 06/04/2008 19:24

Notjustmom...how do you know it is the waitresses choice of work?Maybe it is all she can get at present.Maybe she is studying to do something else.Maybe she does want to be a waitress..I don't know. But haing praised decent service leaving 40p is mean.

geordieminx · 06/04/2008 19:24

You leave a tip if you think the service has been better than expected, you leave a tip to show your appreciation -IMO 40p is an insulting as this is what the service was "worth"

I used to work in corporate hospitality when I was a student, 12 or so blokes coming to watch the cricket in a box usually paid for by a large company - ate and drank for free all day - waited on hand and foot - usually at the end of the day the host would do a collection for the waitress - so many tight wads used to put a hand full of copper on the plate... so

when i worked as a waitress we would usually recieve around £200 a week in tips, that would have been a average of around £2 a table, had everyone only left 40p we would still have been pleased. after all it is extra money on top of your wages.

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 19:26

but that is the point they did not have to tip, it is not mandatory

catering has a cukture of tipping, but not all srevice industyr jobs do eg retail

i have never tipped in a shop or supermarket.it is not commonplace to do so

do you tip the bus driver, the postie for daily deliveries

I can't see how they were braying or how you know they were rich.

'Hate' and 'total scum' are harsh words for people you don't even know. Yabu.

brimfull · 06/04/2008 19:28

god yabu

stop worrying what other folk are doing and enjoy your own meal

girlfrommars · 06/04/2008 19:29

In some jobs tips are expected and the salary is weighted accordingly.

A tip isn't compulsary but it is customary to tip.
