DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

You know people can choose who to have relationships with don't you?

Yeah of course, but you know some of those choices could make someone a wanker?

But I'm all for people making whatever choices they want, especially in relationships. This is honestly not a request that you start inflicting your bat shittery on normal people

Perhaps you’ve escaped harm as a result of Tory policy.Lucky you

It just seems that it’s only Labour supporters who resort to insults like this. Tory supporters (and I can confirm I am not a supporter of the Tories in their current form) are called stupid, scum, evil, along with a whole list of other names. It seems to be as a result of someone just not accepting other people have different opinions, and then just resort to juvenile name calling. Which is normally a trait of a Labour supporter.

Scavernick · 01/06/2024 22:11

My child has been at the sharp end of the cuts to support for children with SEN and I’ll never forgive the fuckers in charge

I am sorry to hear this.

I'm not really interested in a debate here, there's no point. I know nobody is going to change my mind so I doubt I can change yours. But no, I don't see it this way. This current government are proven liars, self interested and self serving. I don't believe for one moment that the Labour party is perfect but I do have hope that they will hold themselves to a higher standard.

But there have been proven liars in the Labour Party too (think Tony Blair and Iraq), and look at Abbott trying to create drama - self interest, and not really interested in the Labour Party, just making it about her. But you’re right, both of us have our own opinions, and neither of us are going change our minds as a result of what a few mumsnetters say.

PelicanPopcorn · 01/06/2024 22:39

I'm sure you're not racist and it's not okay for your husband to call you that, but unfortunately a lot of conservative policies are. So if you vote for them you are voting for racism.

I think your knowledge of conservative immigration policies is out of date?
Think about the hostile environment and Windrush.
Think about the pregnant women and cancer patients unable to get treatment and in massive debt.
Think about the massive delays to the compensation scheme.
Think about the income threshold rises so that people cannot be with their husbands and wives if they live on a nurses salary.
I have first hand experience of the immigration system put in place by the Tories - and it's brutal and racist, and costs literally tens of thousands of pounds for an individual or family - far above the cost of processing. Unless you've gone through the system in the last few years then sorry you have no idea what it's become, the level and type of legislation that's been passed.

And look at the shocking news stories about detention centres, the Bibby Stockholm and how long it takes government to process asylum claims while holding people's lives in limbo and preventing them from working.

They are acting with impunity because they think nobody cares about immigrants and they can just dehumanise them. It' unbelievable.

Do your research and don't enable conservative racism.

I thought Labour were going to set up extra deportation squads? Wes Streeting said only a few days ago that Labour had no plans to reverse the ban on foreign health workers’ dependants. Is this just a ruse and they don't really mean it?

Are you voting for racism?

The vitriol is quite something to behold.

I think it is more passion than vitriol.

Scavernick · 01/06/2024 20:57

Also Kemi Badenoch is hugely popular with grass roots Tories and would have won I think had it gone to membership votes. The racist thing is just ludicrous.

Edited to apologise - just seen your recent post saying the same thing.

Edited

it Is the concept of race that is ludicrous, but it is a very useful idea when you need a scapegoat. Badenoch is seen as “one of us” and I imagine that many of her colleagues would say that they do not think of her as “black”. That doesn’t mean some of those people aren’t racist.

What is striking to me is you hope Labour will hold themselves to a ‘higher standard’ why? They have already said they are not investing anymore money. They have blown the budget already - and some.

I am confused as to why you imagine anything at all will change for the better. There are no policies or plans that I can see that suggests this. I actually think it’s likely to get worse. Labour are terrible, truly terrible with money and are likely to overspend and crash the economy, so it’s very likely there will be less investment, not more, due to a recession. Mass lob losses and capital flights have consequences to real people.

newnamethanks · 02/06/2024 06:21

This lengthy period of Conservative government has been widely successful. The country is thriving, the economy booming. So successful is it that previously ideologically committed Tories in search of a future are scarpering like rats off a sinking ship. And there are still a few left attempting to hang on by their fingernails, continuing to spout that Labour will be worse so we need more of the same success story that has undermined every public institution on which most of us rely. Fool some of the people, some of the time. But not all of us all of the time. Sayonara.

FindThatThing · 02/06/2024 07:41

Whoswhoof · 01/06/2024 17:12

I’ve not said this once? Please don’t make things up.

MASS and ILLEGAL immigration is a problem. People should be allowed to come here under the following conditions (imo)

  • means to support themselves ie savings or equity
  • a trade or a job lined up to support their lifestyles
  • being able to speak the language
  • full background clearance checks
  • made to integrate in society, not form their own little communities that don’t bother with British nationals.

my grandparents did this all legally, made a success of themselves, sent their kids to private schools. So why people keeping using them as an example I’ve no idea!

Including Ukrainians?
Should the one’s who don’t have all these things send back to Ukraine / somewhere else / Rwanda?

Passion? I think that calling others scum, fucking thick. idiots etc is rather more than passion. It's a lack of ability to be able to debate, make points and argue without becoming abusive which is a shame.

What on earth are you actually saying here? The Conservative grassroots members wanted to elect Badenoch and this makes them racist?! She is popular within some elements of the party and they are also racist? Have you actually heard yourself? 😂

I have seen no-one saying that the current Tories are a success or deserve to remain in power. The administration has been a disgrace and needs time out. Labour are not necessarily going to be better.

People who might see Badenoch - private school education, wealthy parents(?) - as “one of us” do not necessarily think the same of other black people. Clearer?

I am sure that many misogynists adored Margaret Thatcher.

They share the same values with Badenoch, it is not about skin colour for heavens sake. I agree they may not feel the same way about another person of colour because they may not the same values so therefore wouldn’t support them in the same way or wish to.

What is staggering is that Labour haven’t even managed to have a female leader, much less any person of colour. It’s now 2024 and still we have a white public school educated multimillionaire of privilege running the Labour Party! It’s damning.

Because perhaps they already speak English - so will find it easier to get a job in the U.K. than, say, France - and perhaps they already have family settled in the U.K.

But that still doesn’t automatically entitle people to just show up in the country of their choice.
My grandparents have been in that situation - they wanted to move away from an oppressive regime to a Western country where they had friends.
There was an opportunity to move there, so they started learning the language.
Then said county decided they weren’t accepting any more new arrivals, so my grandparents’ only option was to go to a different place, where they didn’t know the language at all, plus they had some reservations about that particular country.
But this is where they ended up moving and building their new life. They didn’t just rock up at the country of their choice, regardless of whether they were allowed to or not.

Do you not see anything wrong with your militancy?? It is controlling, you are threatening to leave him if he chooses something different to you?! It’s truly terrible. I consider it a form of abuse and control.

I consider it a form of abuse and control.

I certainly would if my partner tried to tell me how to vote.

But so many migrants do go to other European countries. It's a complete myth that they're all desperate to get in to Britain. Some are, others are not. Look at the number of immigrants countries like Germany take. Apparently Luxembourg takes the highest number of immigrants per 1000 people. The right wing media like us to believe that immigrants want to bypass all other EU countries and come here. While a minority do choose the UK, it's simply not true that everyone wants to be here.
With climate change and political instability around there world we'll see a huge increase in people wanting to come to Europe. It needs to be carefully managed.

You still haven’t got what I am saying. That people who support Badenoch may still be racist but may see Badenoch as an exception because she shares and promotes their values. It also allows them to continue in their racism because they can point to this so-called diversity as proof of not being racist. It’s a common strategy. They all get something out of it.

It feels a bit weird to have someone who cannot understand such a simple idea laughing at me as though they are superior. But then what would a person of colour like me expect from someone like you.

And just so you know I will not be responding to any more of your posts.
