DP called me a middle class racist

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

Hi op,

of course it is out of order, but you knew this. He brings the politico incorrect tchat at home and you are the target…tell him to go and find another Tory voter to annoy 🤷🏼‍♀️

If I were you, I would delight myself in knowing all that would trigger his political talk and push every single button. All at once if necessary 😁😁🥳🥳🥳

You sound charming @laraitopbanana really really charming.

and if, @Whoswhoof thats the most appalling thing you can think of that’s happening in the uk right now, then knock yourself out, vote for what’s in your own particular narrow best interests. 🤷‍♀️

These kind of political talks and else have made up a lot of my uni evenings. Where everyone is passionate but with good humor!

Not at all. It's more out of order that you're going to vote Tory tbh

You are entitled to vote for who you want, that's what is great about democracy. But you can't be upset when other's don't like who you vote for. He's entitled to be upset that his partner votes for someone who is completely unaligned with his views. I love my husband of 20 years, but if he voted Tory it would be divorce, as our views clearly no longer align. I just am unsure that this is a genuine post. I can't think of anyone with parents part of windrush that would vote Tory after the appalling treatment they gave to them. It seems suspicious.

Yes I have uni kids and they are stlll thankfully capable of a good humoured exchange and discussion. And no one is tied to the symbolic witches chair and drowned for simply having a view.

This thread has made me realise how extreme and polarised Labour have become from reasonable, considered opinion and the middle ground.

My psychology education wants to say that these pp do not have good lives, and it’s easier to blame the ‘Tory scum’ than it is to take any responsibility whatsoever for their own lives.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/06/2024 20:20

Yeah if that’s what you choose that to think I meant @laraitopbanana then knock yourself out. Clue: it’s not!

This really is a weak argument. You can still have all these values and not be a Conservative. I’d bet that around half of the British population don’t vote Conservative and that most of them are responsible and resilient and recognise the value of hard work.

Bluntly I would be furious if my previously politically aligned left leaning partner announced they were switching to Tory. Now of all times!. I cannot get my head around this.
The reason the country is in such a mess is because of people voting purely to only benefit themselves and neglecting to think about the bigger picture. You got away lightly imo !

BitOutOfPractice · 02/06/2024 20:43

You are living in false hope and it’s worrying. Nothing can change under Labour, because there simply isn’t the money. You might despair and blame the conservatives but what happens when Labour do not bring the promised land, and things become worse if anything. You do not sound like you have a realistic grasp on what is possible.

i almost feel sorry for Labour they are selling a dream that does not exist.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/06/2024 20:46

I’m responsible. And resilient. I run my own business. I employ people. I still am not voting Tory. Nor would I ever.

Plus standing up for womens rights and safety.

As an aside whilst I know all parties support the war in Gaza, it is only Starmer who said
he thought it was fine for Netanyahu to turn off the electricity and water supplies. !

Nevertheless, that is a cast-iron argument against voting again for the party that brought that situation about. It's heartbreaking to think of all the losses through lockdown fraud that Sunak wrote off, the millions thrown away on government contracts to Tory supporters to produce useless PPE, the £30 billion lost overnight by Kwarteng, let alone the billions lost through Brexit.

I agree with your tolerance wrt dc’ opinions, and generally. Now I wonder if some pp would disown their dc if they failed to vote in the same way as them

I see your point and IF the parties were in effect following the values they adhere to…it would be a good argument.

but really, you can’t blame people for voting for where they feel the actions proposed meet the value they follow.

it isn’t black or white.
