To not like cake.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 27/05/2024 23:31

I just don't see the attraction of cake. I don't like anything spongey or fairy cakes or tarts or anything.

I'm not virtuous. I'm overweight for my height as I love savoury things/ wine/ cheese/ carbs.

It's definitely not about trying to be 'good'. I just don't like it. But cake seems so everywhere and popular. I went to my mum's friend's house today and the cake she had made came out straight away. I feel rude saying that I don't like it - and I did have a small slice to be polite, but I just didn't and don't enjoy it.

I think maybe it's a texture thing. Anyone else?

Cheese. Yes. Cheese. All the cheese

AffIt · 27/05/2024 23:57

I don't particularly like cake, either: I mean it's not a terrible thing in and of itself, but I'd rather have, I dunno, a bowl of smoked almonds or some wine or some cheese.

The problem is the cake evangelists who refuse to not let people who don't like cake very much not like it very much and either go into fits of high dudgeon or try to force it on you.

I DON'T CARE: if you like cake, brilliant, crack on. I don't, please leave me alone.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 27/05/2024 23:58

My son is the same so he doesn’t even have cake on his birthday.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 27/05/2024 23:58

You just don't have a sweet tooth, some people don't.

As someone who definitely has a sweet tooth, I can say there is too much bad cake in the world- dry, too sweet, allegedly flavoured ie lemon or early grey or whatever but just tastes plain, oily, skimpy slices...

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 00:00

@AffIt yes I think it's this. Cake likers/ lovers just assume everyone loves it. But we don't!

I am in the no cake club - I was at a group thing for a significant birthday the other week & you should have seen the look of horror on someone's face when I declined a piece....
I wouldn't mind but I have known these people for more than 15 years & if can't refuse something both I & they know I won't like when can you????? I will point out even though I have lost weight recently - I have never liked cake!!!

Ciderlout · 28/05/2024 00:03

I don’t like shop bought cake but home made sponge is divine.

DrFoxtrot · 28/05/2024 00:24

YANBU - I will volunteer myself to selflessly help you get rid of any cake that comes your way.

Cake is actually my favourite food 😭 I cannot imagine a life without cake.

drusth · 28/05/2024 00:28

I love cake. I can happily give up crisps for cake.

Alas, even a sniff of cake makes me gain 2 pounds.

pizzaHeart · 28/05/2024 00:47

I like cakes (too much tbh) but I’m not surprised at all that some people don’t. I know a few personally and it never bothered me, we all are different. I can enjoy my coffee and cake when you are sitting opposite with your coffee/ tea/ wine/ beer/ sparkling water and crisps/almonds/ pork scratchings.
And PPs are right that a lot of cakes are pretty awful: dry or greasy, full of artificial colorings, sickly sweet. Some cupcakes have so much icing that I feel sick even looking at them.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/05/2024 00:59

I don't like cake either.

A cheese scone? Yes
Cheesecake? Yes (it's not really cake)
A brownie? Yes.

When I first started work in 1990, the whole office used to go mad for that frozen Sara Lee Black forst gateaux shit (that was soggy when defrosted) Every fucker brought it in for birthdays.

songaboutjam · 28/05/2024 01:05

I don't dislike cake as such, but I can only enjoy a very small slice of it. If it's a homemade cake with low sugar content, I can eat more.

I enjoy the texture (as long as it's not dry and claggy), but I don't like sweet fatty foods in anything more than small doses. Sweet, yes. Fatty, yes. Sweet and fatty? Sickening.

songaboutjam · 28/05/2024 01:05

Oh, and anything with fondant icing deserves to be exorcised. Evil evil stuff.

Sleepandchocolate2202 · 28/05/2024 01:16

OP IM 100% with you - I don’t understand why people get so excited about it. I don’t like it and usually politely turn it down. I also dislike marzipan and icing .. sponge is also too easily ruined and made dry by some peoples home baking .. that’s probably made it worse for me over the years.
bar of chocolate yes please - cake ? No chance .. I’ll have a chocolate tort for a bday cake please !

AffIt · 28/05/2024 01:17

@lemonsaretheonlyfruit and it's so specific: nobody tries to push okra on you if you say you're not mad about it, but if you say you don't like cake you might as well be punting kittens over a 6' fence.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/05/2024 01:18

I don’t get cake, either.

Crisps and cheese though ….. (imagine drooling Homer Simpson in his largest housecoat).

DramaAlpaca · 28/05/2024 01:29

Hmm. It depends on the cake, but most are, quite frankly, horrid. My own homemade cakes are good <stealth boast> but pretty much all shop bought cakes are nasty and claggy, and/or much too sweet. On the whole, I'm really not a cake woman.

I'm much more into crisps, cheese and wine. I can take or leave most sweet stuff, including chocolate, but I cannot resist cheese <looks depressedly at cheese induced expanding waistline>

GogAndMagog · 28/05/2024 03:19

Shop bought is horrible, homemade is lovely though can be very sweet. I try to reduce the sugar if I can.

YANBU. I don't like ice cream!

CarrotPotatoRooster · 28/05/2024 03:25

I don't like anything sweet, cake, choc chip biscuits, puddings, chocolate. People think I'm weird, the looks and gasps I get!

I wonder if it's a genetic thing, like not liking coriander. Just don't like sweet stuff!

I'm very overweight, eat too much other crap.

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 28/05/2024 03:54

I love to look at cake. It's visually incredibly appealing. When I see a particularly excellent looking one I have to remind myself that I won't like it.

Once in a while I buy some in hope that it'll taste as good as it looks, but it never does. Sadness ensues.

amylou8 · 28/05/2024 04:06

Not keen on cake, biscuits, sweets or chocolate either. Give me the cheese!!! Unfortunately I can't eat any of it if I want to stay a healthy weight, so it's a moot point...pass the quinoa salad please.

Gnomegarden32 · 28/05/2024 04:10

God I wish I didn't like cake!

JingsMahBucket · 28/05/2024 04:29

Most British, cakes even homemade cafe ones, are way too sweet. Tooth achingly sweet. Sometimes they’re even dry. And then there’s the weird fondant icing that’s prevalent along with those overly candy covered cakes. Or sprinkling fucking confectioner’s sugar over everything. I prefer American cakes much more and they don’t layer on the sugar as much.

CurlewKate · 28/05/2024 04:43

I don't like cake much-but I do love baking! So if you come to my house you get cake.....

Garlicked · 28/05/2024 05:40

I used to be very unbothered about cake. Something switched in my fifties: now I get up in the middle of the night to make one of these https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/microwave-mug-cake

(You'd need a giant mug, btw! I make mine in a 1 litre bowl)
