To not like cake.

I just don't see the attraction of cake. I don't like anything spongey or fairy cakes or tarts or anything.

I'm not virtuous. I'm overweight for my height as I love savoury things/ wine/ cheese/ carbs.

It's definitely not about trying to be 'good'. I just don't like it. But cake seems so everywhere and popular. I went to my mum's friend's house today and the cake she had made came out straight away. I feel rude saying that I don't like it - and I did have a small slice to be polite, but I just didn't and don't enjoy it.

I think maybe it's a texture thing. Anyone else?

I like proper cake made with eggs and butter - not the flavourless oversweetened bought stuff.
And desserts are too fancy in restaurants - just a crème brûlée -no need to add rasps or anything, or good icecream with butterscotch sauce -no need for mango or green tea flavour.

Nelliemellie · 28/05/2024 11:14

Love cheesecake, it’s not too sweet and can have it with soft fruits and nuts. But actual cake makes me feel sick.

MuchTooTired · 28/05/2024 11:17

I bloody love the right cake. I’m not a fan of fancy cakes, just a big standard victoria sponge with fresh cream and jam. Or butter icing. That’s my main thing, I can take or leave the cake for butter icing!

My thing that I don’t like that everyone else in the world seems to enjoy is coffee.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 11:30

@Nelliemellie
Yes cheesecake! I love that.. but I think mainly as it's not sponge consistency!

I’ll eat it 😂

That’s actually just like my DH. His birthday is either a cheesecake, or a bunch of circular cheeses piled on top of each other lol

Sillystrumpet · 28/05/2024 11:37

Come to think of it, I also love cheesecake, but not the baked variety, don’t like that, and I also really like lemon drizzle cake. If it is drenched with lemon syrup, or sticky toffee pudding, which I’m not sure if the latter is actually a cake or not, but does have a sponge ..

also sticky/iced buns or pastries, not a fan and find them a bit dry too.

Ginkypig · 28/05/2024 11:53

I don’t think it’s actually that uncommon.

I like cake (obviously not all flavours though) but it has to be good cake or I just don’t see the point! Iv had so so so many disappointing slices sometimes quite expensive from cafes where everything else is lovely and therefore expectations were high then it’s been dry and crap! so now I don’t have it very often.
I also really dislike that icing you get folded over birthday cakes fondant?

my family member is like you, she a great cook and baker but has no interest in cake but would smash a cheesecake to bits haha.

my other family member doesn’t like chips! That I find a bit odd but then I love a well made chip. Saying that he doesn’t really like most potato type things but would eat an entire pan of rice pudding which would give be the projectile bokes

each to their own eh

Yes. I love cake and Britain has some excellent traditional cakes. But nowadays most cake is crap. Particularly commercial cake. Can’t remember the last time I had a genuinely nice cake from a cafe or shop. They are usually too sweet or two dry or covered in overly sweet topping.

I blame America.

WTH. This has nothing to do with America. American cakes are wonderful. Leave us out of this! UK has its own tradition of going full hog / overdosing with sugar from the Caribbean slave trade. Golden syrup anyone?

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/05/2024 11:56

American pies are perfection. Apple, cherry, blueberry, pumpkin. Always just the right mix of tart and sweet.

I find British cakes cloyingly sweet.

Gorgonemilezola · 28/05/2024 11:57

I like a good plain cake but invariably the cake/icing ratio is all wrong. Inches of sickly buttercream, no thank you.

I love fruit cake with a thin covering of marzipan and no royal or fondant.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 12:05

Ah yes I should have narrowed it down to 'I don't like sponge cakes' - but that's most cakes isn't it?

Weirdly my dream job would be a professional cake maker. But they seem to have a lot of over handled fondant! At least I would never be tempted to try any of the cakes I made.

I'm with you @lemonsaretheonlyfruit give me a delicious cheeseboard over sugary airy fairy cake all day long!!!!

mumgodloveher · 28/05/2024 12:47

You are being exceptionally reasonable in my book, OP, because it means more for me🤣🍰

@MrsSkylerWhite Funny you should say that. I was just thinking about and missing American apple pie just this past weekend. I’m going back this summer will indulge in pies, especially blueberry.

Nannyfannybanny · 28/05/2024 14:11

I don't like donuts, I find them too "heavy", but I don't like meat either but at least no-one thinks that's weird anymore, like 40 odd years ago when I went veggie, I remember a male nurse at work saying it was unhealthy.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 14:13

Things I love but are not cake (I don't think)

Tarte Tatin (I think that's classed as a pastry)
Apple crumble - (that's a crumble I assume)
Cheese cake (a cake that's not a cake)
Pastel de nata (hmm kind of a tart I suppose?)
A jam donut (I think that's the closest to a cake on here I think)

I do have a sweet tooth of sorts. If someone offers me sone chocolate then I will definitely say yes.

My go to sweet thing (apologies in advance) is those really fizzy strawberry things that take the roof of your mouth off or (I know) tangfastics

I don't like shop bought cake, and am fussy about ice cream. I don't like royal icing or over decorated cakes (though I do like cream cheese icing and ganache!) But lovely home made cake I would definitely have a slice of.

shearwater2 · 28/05/2024 14:15

I'm not keen on jam doughnuts but I do like the hot fried ones.

tobee · 28/05/2024 14:20

I think texture of food is more important than taste and smell in terms of enjoyment

I love good cake. But it's all good of others don't.

This. You can keep your jam, custard and Krispy Kreme type donuts, give me a hot fried sugared one any day

99victoria · 28/05/2024 14:25

I don't really like cake either and I agree with the OP that it can be awkward because cake comes out at so many occasions. I used to have a small piece to be polite but the last couple of years I have taken to explaining that I don't really like cake and, whilst my friends and family all think I'm mad, they all accept that I don't want a slice when it's produced and don't offer it to me.
Like PPs, I'm not a diet freak - I'm a size12 and I love chocolate and pastries, just not keen on cake 😬

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 14:28

@Idontjetwashthefucker

Ahhh why do people (my kids included) insist on krispy cremes? They are repulsive.

OP posts:
Elphame · 28/05/2024 14:35

I can take it or leave it. Mostly leave it. The last cake I made was the Yuletide fruit cake of which I ate exactly half a slice. The one before that was probably the previous years!

Krispy Cremes or however they are spelt are just disgusting. Horrible texture and much much too sweet.

And why the love for Red Velvet cake? It just tastes of food colouring

Give me a packet of crisps any day

Lord knows, had one at work for a birthday, managed one bite and binned it. I love sweet things but KK made my teeth ache
