To not like cake.

I just don't see the attraction of cake. I don't like anything spongey or fairy cakes or tarts or anything.

I'm not virtuous. I'm overweight for my height as I love savoury things/ wine/ cheese/ carbs.

It's definitely not about trying to be 'good'. I just don't like it. But cake seems so everywhere and popular. I went to my mum's friend's house today and the cake she had made came out straight away. I feel rude saying that I don't like it - and I did have a small slice to be polite, but I just didn't and don't enjoy it.

I think maybe it's a texture thing. Anyone else?

I like cake (ish - it wouldn't be my first choice). But my secret dislike that I don't admit to many people..... I don't like ice-cream.

Neither do I. There is absolutely nothing to like about the stuff.

People just can't understand it, can they?

Same here with ice-cream. Everyone I tell that to seems to think I'm weird, but I don't like the texture or the coldness of it, or any flavours I've tried either.

Tallisker · 28/05/2024 16:24

I like fish cakes.

tedgran · 28/05/2024 16:29

Wish I didn't!

Tisforptarmigan · 28/05/2024 16:31

I really dislike cake - well the sponge part anyway. I just scrape all the gooey insides out and eat that.

Even worse than cake is pastry. Never eat the rotten old depressingly beige stuff. Just yuk.

DAZZlanch · 29/05/2024 22:24

NRTFT but I understand. I regularly cook my kids omelette. It smells delicious. But the texture makes me boak. I just can’t. Granted, people are less likely to pull out a celebratory omelette but I still get it! Xx

Bourneo · 29/05/2024 23:11

I don't like cake either! Always too sweet and sickly. I love a biscuit though. Literally can't get through a day without them.

Harry12345 · 29/05/2024 23:47

I don’t like any cake, pastries, meringue, croissants, sweets, cream, jam, pancakes etc

unmowngrass · 30/05/2024 03:05

I'm not much for it either. I'll eat it, if it's there, and every now and then it's exactly the thing, but if I never ate cake again the rest of my life I'd be perfectly fine.

I like cheese and bread and cheese scones and sometimes crisps and a sausage roll, and I would eat ice cream every day and twice on Sundays, but I am not very fussed about cake. Or biscuits. But I'd eat them if they're there.

Fraaahnces · 30/05/2024 03:11

I grew up hating cakes, biscuits, cereal, bread, etc… It was the 80’s and everything was all about carbs instead of fat, so my mum forced me to gag down Weetabix every morning before school, and take sandwiches (because what else was there at the time?). I used to bin or swap the sandwiches. I was diagnosed with coeliac disease when I was 20.

Fraaahnces · 30/05/2024 03:11

Typo - when I was 30!!!

MinnieMountain · 30/05/2024 05:38

I love it. But I don’t like olives, which plenty of people think is odd.

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 30/05/2024 17:20

I love cake! Where do you stand with a flapjack or a brownie...? The textures of those are quite different to a classic sponge. Or maybe you're just not a sweet person, my husband would always take a starter over a pudding whereas I would happily eat desserts all day to be honest...

Idontjetwashthefucker · 30/05/2024 18:30

I've just remembered there is one cake I like but you can't get it anymore, Sara Lee Black Forest Gateau - now that WAS a cake 🎂

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 30/05/2024 22:14

For full disclosure- I don't like cake but I have to admit that I love weetabix with butter. It has to be salted cold butter

I could have written this post. Cake just doesn't do it for me.

I find more savoury cakes like coffee, carrot and banana cake more tolerable.

Splat92 · 30/05/2024 22:25

I'm not a dessert person in general but in particular I don't see the attraction of cake or ice cream. I've been with my DH for 30 years and MIL still acts surprised whenever I turn down cake even though I have literally never said yes to it during that time. I am a complete chocoholic though but doesn't mean I want a chocolate cake or tart or anything.

Haveanaiceday · 03/09/2024 23:03

I love cake but not too keen on very sugary icing and buttercream, or thick jam or a very dry cake. My favourite are things like fruitcake, or lemon cake and I like all those sweet breads, scones or pastries and flapjacks that are only medium sweet.
Overall I have to say not liking sweet things is a good thing, as whilst I think you can have some sweets in moderation as part of a healthy diet if you love them it's not easy to be moderate.

xsquared · 03/09/2024 23:06

People like different things op, and cake clearly isn't your thing. That's fine. It's also acceptable to decline something you don't like, otherwise it will be offered again!

However, a absence of a poll suggests you probably knew you were going to get a high proportion of YABU. 🤣

pinkgown · 03/09/2024 23:27

I like my own cake and home made icecream. Also cakes at local village fetes tend to be OK because they are homemade.
But bought cake/icecream is far too sweet, and as fror "cupcakes" - yuk.
Over the years there has been a trend to make everything sweeter, eg. pickle and ketchup, which is why it has to be refrigerated now. For instance pickled onions... they never had to be kept in the fridge because they were sourer.

CurlewKate · 04/09/2024 04:51

I adore baking-and made my living doing it for a while. But I don't like cake much either. I'd much rather have something bread or pastry based.

Lincslady53 · 04/09/2024 06:52

Sponge cake, either home made or shop bought I will eat but never enjoy and usually regret eating, especially if it has sickly too sweet icing or even worse, buttercream. But a piece of dark, rich fruit cake is a thing of wondrous beauty, especially with a piece of crumbly Lancashire or Wensleydale cheese. When did wedding cake change from fruit cake to sponge? Really disappoints me as I am expecting a lovely piece of fruity delight, and instead get a piece of drying sponge with oversweet icing.

I'm so glad I've found this post and responses like these!😄 I also don't see the appeal. 90% cakes I've tried are buttercream (victoria at best) sponge. It could be the UK thing as well. I've tried cakes in other European countries and actually liked them as they are more layered with different textures.

Home made cake puts me off. Hugeness thoughts...
Also too stodgy. I often decline
