To not like cake.

I just don't see the attraction of cake. I don't like anything spongey or fairy cakes or tarts or anything.

I'm not virtuous. I'm overweight for my height as I love savoury things/ wine/ cheese/ carbs.

It's definitely not about trying to be 'good'. I just don't like it. But cake seems so everywhere and popular. I went to my mum's friend's house today and the cake she had made came out straight away. I feel rude saying that I don't like it - and I did have a small slice to be polite, but I just didn't and don't enjoy it.

I think maybe it's a texture thing. Anyone else?

I feel you OP! It's actually really annoying because so many people just can't accept it, and in certain cases cake is a cultural custom where it becomes rude to refuse.

I went to a party once where the host had made not one, but three different types of cake! And she was really very pushy about everyone trying a bit of each. I reiterated that I simply don't like cake but thank you very much for the offer, and was made to feel that I was being very rude.

I don't have a sweet tooth at all, and because I'm not used to eating much sugar, if I do have to force myself to eat something sweet for the sake of politeness it makes me feel quite sick.

There's cake and cake. Some really isn't very nice. Others are just the job after a long walk with a pot of tea.

Yes. I love cake and Britain has some excellent traditional cakes. But nowadays most cake is crap. Particularly commercial cake. Can’t remember the last time I had a genuinely nice cake from a cafe or shop. They are usually too sweet or two dry or covered in overly sweet topping.

I blame America.

@flutterby1 yes! This isn't the main reason I don't like it but I also find this aspect off putting too. Bake sale at school / work 🤢

🤣 this did make me laugh as I have this thought also! When we do bake sale at school I bake a batch of cakes and ice them with my son, I'm very particular on hygiene.... and that's the only one I buy for him when we go to the stall! Makes me feel silly but I am a bit funny about the handmade ones at a school fair! And I don't really like cake either (son does!)

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 27/05/2024 23:36

I'd actually like to like it. But I don't!

With you all the way! Moost pointless combination of flour, eggs and butter!
And as for the whole 'let's play with our food until it resembles something completely different' way of doing cakes...😠😠🤬

Nannyfannybanny · 28/05/2024 07:43

I have to say I make the most fabulous cakes. DGS birthday coming up,am doing Resident Evil for him. I can't stand supermarket bought cakes, they are revolting, taste of chemicals or sawdust! I can't stand pizzas, coke or pepsi and people think that's really weird. Everyone is different.

PalmUK · 28/05/2024 07:46

DH doesn't like cake much either.

He'll have a small slice on DC birthday but otherwise won't touch it, doesn't really hate it but not point forcing down something that is also so unhealthy (on top of the lager/wine/burgers/bacon/white bread he does like)?

I would rather pass on many cakes too - they have to be 'worth it' and some definitely aren't.

KimberleyClark · 28/05/2024 07:47

I agree that most commercial cakes are bad. Full of preservatives and colouring and stuff you wouldn’t put in a home baked cake. But a home baked one is lovely. I don’t bake often but enjoy the result when I do.

But who doesn’t enjoy a freshly baked scone with jam and cream?

Toooldforthis36 · 28/05/2024 07:48

Grown people get over excited about pastel coloured cakes imo 🤣

too sweet yet bland, would rather eat a flapjack!

grafittiartist · 28/05/2024 07:49

I don't like cake either.
It's just not a treat.
Will happily have biscuits/ tray bake type things.
Ice cream- not a treat either.

Sillystrumpet · 28/05/2024 07:50

I’m not a big cake fan either, nor crisps. Chocolate, biscuits, yes, but cake and crisps I will eat, but it’s just meh to me.

Misthios · 28/05/2024 07:52

You do yo.

I don't like cheese and cannot believe that anyone would ever prefer cheese and crackers over cake or dessert.

Peclet · 28/05/2024 07:54

I don’t like cake. Friend is a wonderful baker with their own shop. Everytime she comes over she brings treats. No one in my house likes cake. It’s very uncomfortable!

Beezknees · 28/05/2024 07:55

I love cake but my DS doesn't like it, never has. He would never eat any of his birthday cakes when he was little. He loves other sweet stuff, chocolate and sweets, just not cake.

BigDahliaFan · 28/05/2024 07:59

Cheese or cake…I’m definitely cheese….or anything savoury really.

but sometimes a freshly baked cake does just hit the spot.

but most of the time it’s just too much sweet….

Gensola · 28/05/2024 08:01

I’m not a big fan of most cakes either. I do like a homemade scone with jam and cream, but would probably go for a cheese scone if available. Often really don’t want pudding on a menu and it’s very annoying being nagged to eat one.

Eistigi · 28/05/2024 08:06

I like cake (ish - it wouldn't be my first choice). But my secret dislike that I don't admit to many people..... I don't like ice-cream.

Fouxdefafaaiai · 28/05/2024 08:10

I'm not a massive cake fan. I don't like cream or jam either. Like a pp I'm not a dessert person at all. When I was a child and was expected to eat jelly 🤢 and ice cream, I learnt to say: 'no thanks I'm full' when offered it, or: 'I've already had some it was yummy'. Rather than 'bleurgh i'd i'd rather eat a mouldy sock' 🤣 People are weird about cake and sweet things, so at grown up dinner parties I make noises about how full I am and there is no room for dessert 😆

IamaRevenant · 28/05/2024 08:13

I'm not overly keen on anything sweet except chocolate. Either just chocolate on its own or chocolate bars etc where the main component is chocolate - eg I like chocolate with biscuits bits in it or nuts but not keen on biscuits, cake or nuts coated with chocolate or containing chocolate chips. Anything else such as cake, ice cream, sweets, tarts etc I don't really like.

My mum always provides freshly baked puddings when i go for dinner there and I might have a small piece of some, like banoffee pie or lemon meringue, but generally I'm just not bothered. If I'm going to eat something hugely unhealthy I'll go for the chocolate every time.

I'm the same. Cake is fine, homemade cake better than store-bought, as with many foods. I think most cakes are a disappointment, and I don't have desserts after meals most of the time. I'd rather have a starter and main course, no room for anything after that.

But ice-cream? It's completely uninteresting to me. Tastes of cold.

I'm not slim either, I get my excess calories from overeating plenty of other calorific foods.

VereeViolet · 28/05/2024 08:27

I think ‘cake’ is too broad a category to dismiss entirely. There are so many different kinds of cake! I agree that a cheap, store-bought, low-fat, high-sugar, dry cake is often not very inspiring.

When I was a child, we had a German friend that sometimes made us her traditional apple cake. It was one of the best cakes I’ve ever tasted. Not extremely sweet, but lots of tangy apple and buttery soft cake. I’m also partial to good chocolate cake and cream cheese frosting.

To each their own of course, but you could probably expand your horizons. Good cake is usually homemade in my experience though.

Partridgewell · 28/05/2024 08:34

I am really fussy with cake. I wouldn't eat shop-bought cake, or anything with too much icing.

There are lots of people who bake at work, but I only bother if it's one particular lady, who doesn't over-use sugar. I can't stand over-iced, dry cake.

Fizbosshoes · 28/05/2024 08:52

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 27/05/2024 23:58

You just don't have a sweet tooth, some people don't.

As someone who definitely has a sweet tooth, I can say there is too much bad cake in the world- dry, too sweet, allegedly flavoured ie lemon or early grey or whatever but just tastes plain, oily, skimpy slices...

There is nothing more disappointing than when someone makes a big deal about there's going to be cake and it's a massive costco birthday cake really sad sponge with thin fondant icing!

I prefer home made cakes and unlike most of MN have never given a thought to the hygeine standards in the person's kitchen!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 28/05/2024 08:57

Not a massive fan of cake either, don't like fruitcake but at least it actually tastes of something, but sponge cake just tastes of sweet. Cupcakes are the worst, they look pretty but it's bland sponge topped with sickly sweet icing.

The taste of sponge cake usually reflects the ingredient quality. It’s much better made with good butter, fresh free range eggs than with baking margarine or flora and old eggs. My favourite is coffee and walnut.

I wish I didn’t love cake. I love all cake. I also kind of wish I was one of those people who aren’t bothered about food. Would you say this is you generally speaking? I definitely have the gene for obesity discussed in Ultra Processed People which people who live to eat often have, regardless of size. I’m not obese but I definitely could be if I wasn’t conscious of portions and eating well.
