To not like cake.

I just don't see the attraction of cake. I don't like anything spongey or fairy cakes or tarts or anything.

I'm not virtuous. I'm overweight for my height as I love savoury things/ wine/ cheese/ carbs.

It's definitely not about trying to be 'good'. I just don't like it. But cake seems so everywhere and popular. I went to my mum's friend's house today and the cake she had made came out straight away. I feel rude saying that I don't like it - and I did have a small slice to be polite, but I just didn't and don't enjoy it.

I think maybe it's a texture thing. Anyone else?

Generally I'm with you in the not liking cake but with a couple of exceptions - Battenberg and golden syrup cake.

I quite like biscuits, especially chewy cookies - how do you feel about those?

IbisDancer · 28/05/2024 09:44

I also do not like cake and have been looked at like an alien from another planet for confessing such heresy. I only admit it when someone catches me sneakily disposing of unwanted cake into a bin. You can’t say no to cake. I have tried and people make pouty faces and puppy dog eyes and say you’re skinny enough why are you worried have the cake!

This is arguably the most unreasonable post I’ve ever seen on here.

😂
I bloody love cake - all except Battenburg

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/05/2024 09:49

You’re allowed not to like it, or anything else most people do like.
I really don’t like cream, or milk in my tea, which in many people’s eyes makes me a weirdo, but I really don’t care.

Theothername · 28/05/2024 09:50

I’m not fond of it either. I can tolerate it but would much prefer a nice crumble, tart, ice cream or chocolate. It’s bearable with cream and fruit but I deplore butter cream or that horrible synthetic stuff they used to have in the 80s

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 09:54

Interesting comments re home made and shop bought. I made a carrot cake a couple of years ago (like another PP, I love cooking and baking but just don't like the end result of baking) ... I actually liked the carrot cake. I think it's because it's a less dry/ claggy feel. (I believe the official term is mouthfeel but that's such an awful word) . I do like a jam donut but I think that's mainly for the jam.

I agree that it's generally considered an offence to not like cake. I went to my mum's yesterday and she had made a cake. She put a slice on my plate and I didn't have the heart not to eat it in case she thought it was about her cake making skills. I would have turned it down if it had been one she had bought. Weirdly she doesn't like cake either so I have no idea why she made one.

I'm not really a cake fan either, don't really like sponge. But I love carrot cake, rich dark fruit cake, chocolate torte, tiffin, flapjack, scones, shortbread so I'm not being holier than thou Grin

stayathomer · 28/05/2024 10:32

I feel the same about coffee and I only started liking tea after I had Covid (I know!!). In Ireland if you don’t drink tea or coffee nobody seems to know what to do with you!! 😅 Hope everything eases up for you op x

I don’t like any of this stuff but I’d much rather as if you go to a house or party or at Christmas time this is so much more distinguished than eying up the kids’ cupcakes😅😅😅

There is nothing more disappointing than when someone makes a big deal about there's going to be cake and it's a massive costco birthday cake really sad sponge with thin fondant icing!

I prefer home made cakes and unlike most of MN have never given a thought to the hygeine standards in the person's kitchen!

Or colin the caterpillar, the driest, most flavourless cake ever.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 28/05/2024 10:36

@stayathomer oh yes! I don't like coffee either. I didn't want to admit to that in the same post as not liking cake! I would like to like coffee but I can't seem to work up the enthusiasm that lots of people have.. so I stick with tea- which I drink gallons of

Just to add to the heresy, I don’t like Yorkshire puddings either, and simply cannot see the point of them. For very similar reasons to not liking cake. It is just a bit meh to me.

wendycupcakes · 28/05/2024 10:39

I dont like cake either but will have a cinnamon bun now and again.
I dont like anything with chocolate in it dont like chocolate full stop.
I hate strawberry`s and anything that as strawberrys in it.
Cant stand any jams of any kind.
Im just not a sweet food person

LakeTiticaca · 28/05/2024 10:41

Mass produced cake=crap
A home made Victoria sponge with a strawberry jam and butter cream filling= heaven on earth 🥰🥰

Absolutely. It's made me feel unsafe, too.

IMakeCrapCakes · 28/05/2024 10:46

I don't like cake either. I like making them for family/friends (and by my username you can tell I am not the best at it although they always taste nice!) but as for eating it myself, nope. I just don't think It's worth the calories! And I don't have much of a sweet tooth. I've enjoyed it the odd time, usually when I have been really hungry and It's been the only thing on offer, or occasionally at gatherings when someone has been kind enough to make a vegan creation and I'd been touched and wanted to try a small slice. But I'd never actively choose to have/buy any.

Chypre · 28/05/2024 10:52

It could be that you haven't found your favourite cake yet! In certain conditions, I would give my arm and leg to have a piece of Swedish Princess Cake (prinsesstårta). But also, I would consider giving my arm (maybe not the leg....) in exchange for a guarantee that anything with buttercream would leave the face of the Earth, forever. Buttercream is just vile. It only exists because it is commercially convenient and can keep shape in the fridge for weeks, unlike chantilly.

Oh yes Colin (Other caterpillars are available! ) is very overrated imo!

Decisionsdecisions1 · 28/05/2024 10:56

I don’t like cake either. Always awkward when family buy me a birthday cake and I’d rather have chocolate/crisps/fruit crumble with custard (drool) instead.

The one exception is my MiL’s ginger cake which I could eat all day (and have done).

Decisionsdecisions1 · 28/05/2024 10:57

Don’t like ice cream either as makes my teeth hurt. And can’t stand cheese. So dessert menus are one big disappointment.

Buttercream is fine as long as it’s made with butter, and vanilla extract rather than essence.

I firmly believe that (melted) butter goes inside the cake, not on top of it. Are we starting cake wars? (light hearted!)

TabbyM · 28/05/2024 11:04

@Chypre I love prinsesstårta but haven't found a good source in the UK!

Well inside the cake s a filling is what I use it for when making a Victoria sandwich. The top gets a dusting of sugar and no more.

Wotcher · 28/05/2024 11:04

I love GOOD cake, but it’s increasingly hard to find. And given most cake these days is dry, doesn’t taste great, and has a hard crust, I can definitely understand what you’re saying.

However, I do love a moist and tasty cake. I find banana cake with dark chocolate chips is fantastic, as the banana keeps it moist.

I also had a very nice Guinness cake at the weekend.
