AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

BS MATE

I don't think you know much about politics bud.

Bud, I amy not "know" as much as your re "politics" BUT, I know enough, more than enough to be blune that the Labour lot left England in an almost bankrupt status and history will repeat itself even we encounter the misfortune of Labour getting into number 10 as a coalition gov.

2023 - 2024 - the facts - how many Labour councils😂 have gone bankrupt??

Thats right - run away from the facts

Oh the private school parents are out gain.🙄

When you're accustomed to privilege equality feels like oppression.

Nevermind that the number of children who are homeless or living in poverty has sky-rocketed under the Tories, or that children's health and social care services have been systematically starved of funds for the last decade. Some people are quite happy to throw the most vulnerable children in society under the bus as long as they continue to get the tax breaks they've previously enjoyed on their own child's private education.

Fortunately, since private education is out of reach for the vast majority of the country, whether they have to pay VAT on it or not, it won't make a difference to the GE result however much they shout and stamp their feet about the unfairness of it all.

Yes and more improtantly, Labour did leave England is a proper mess, a near-bankrupt staus. Just like Labour councils are going bankrupt in 2023 and 2024

Genuine question @DistinguishedSocialCommentator , do you not realise there are three other nations in the UK? Why do you only ever talk about England?

Obviously we have devolution for some things, but the Treasury is the holder of the UK's purse strings.

It is almost as if you don't live in the UK and, like some Americans, refer to England when you mean the UK.

IClaudine · 24/05/2024 12:29

Don't fret @DistinguishedSocialCommentator no coalition will be needed. Labour will get a majority.

randomchap · 24/05/2024 12:30

As everyone well knows, the funding for councils from central government has been slashed. Sunak even boasted about removing funding from poorer areas to increase funding in richer ones.

Councils going bankrupt is not something to crow about. It means that children, elderly, and other vulnerable people do not get the support they need.

Unable to reposnd in a sensible way to the facts that Labour Gov left England in an almost good as bankrupt status. Labour coucils going bankrupt 2023-2024.

You know that when you continually talk shite you just look daft, right?

By just about any measure you care to think of, the UK is in a much worse place after 14 years of the tories compared to where it was at the end of the labour years.

Interesting as well that you think that labour winning a legitimate election would be "getting in via the back door". I mean, that's a really, really stupid thing to say.

Notonthestairs · 24/05/2024 12:58

I really don't like the suggestion that your preferred party not winning means the alternative has won via the back door ie suspicious means.

It's a very Trumpian urge to denigrate the system. And we've seen how that panned out.

IClaudine · 24/05/2024 13:03

Just looked up current odds. 2/17 Labour to win.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator here is an explanation of odds. If you can manage to understand it you will realise that betting on Labour to win will not make anyone's fortune right now.

Bless you for making the suggestion though.

Here are some examples of fractional bets, how they would work and how much the bookies will pay out for a win.

3/1 – Bookies pay £3 for every £1 staked
15/2 – Bookies pay £15 for every £2 staked
3/5 – Bookies pay £3 for every £5 staked
1/1 – Bookies pay £1 for every £1 staked

The first two bets are called “odds-against” bets: a scenario where the bookie thinks the event is more likely not to happen – the bookie is betting against an event occurring and that it is unlikely.

The third one is an “odds-on” bet: a scenario where the bookie thinks the event is likely to happen.

When both numbers are the same (last example), this is an “evens” bet: a 50/50 bet. In this scenario you would double your stake if placing a winning bet.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/05/2024 13:04

@HelenaWaiting if she is in from Tufton st- is it that the usual team are on half term jollies? Because some of the comments are bat shit- Tory councils are going bust too (clue is they've lost most of their central funding and labour areas on the whole have more social deprivation) Labour did not bankrupt the country- debt is now 4 times as high.- nor did they trash the UKs triple AAA credit rating. I don't know what it is some posters are frightened of, Starmer is hardly a commie -
