AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

So the people who don’t send their children to private school or have two properties, what are their prospects?

I normally vote conservative however I just feel like they have run out of steam the past few years. Labour’s beliefs on the “culture wars “ concern me and where they will take us foreign policy wise, inheritance tax concerns leaving the infamous “ there’s no money left” note, and I am very concerned about the anti semitism especially being a History teacher- I know what that leads to! I think I’m honestly going to just have to read up on the individual candidates in my constituency and see what their personal beliefs are and previous actions. It’s certainly much harder to know what to vote this time round!

ilovesooty · 22/05/2024 18:40

There are so many inaccuracies and so much drivel in the OP. I've only just finished work and dissecting it would take more effort than I can manage.

Not that it would be worth it anyway for someone who's really not interested in debate.

Only boomers have a couple of properties and a decent private pension . It doesn’t matter how hard we work it’s an uphill struggle. So FO with you opinion

There's no typical "boomer". Varied group of people with nothing in common except their age. There's several million "boomers" in poverty.

I agree that "working hard" and all that jazz doesn't mean being ok financially. Lots of the lowest paid jobs are hard work and long hours, and working hard doesn't prevent disability or something else happening that pulls the rug from under your feet.

With the private schools and VAT. I don't know why some people think it's going to "stick it to the rich". The wealthiest won't be affected. They'll still afford private schools. The families affected will be the ones who stretched to afford it, sometimes because no decent state school near them if their child has SEN. Imo the real school inequality is between different state schools. Difference between affording a house near a good state school and not.

I shall not be voting Labour as I think that the party is stuffed with misogynists and anti-Semites.
I shan't vote Tory because they need to go, re-group and build a better party then they currently are.
I shall probably spoil my ballot (again). None of them are up to the job imo.

Agree with you 100 percent, most likely will spoil my ballot this time

BringItOnTooRight · 22/05/2024 18:41

I own a property and am currently paying several hundreds of pounds a month more than I was before Liz Truss - so YABVU.

No tax raise could possibly compete with the devastating effect of a several-percentage-point rise in a interest rates (much higher in the UK than in any other comparable country).

Also inflation under the Tories (much higher in the UK than in any other comparable country).

No tax rise could possibly compete with the devastating effect of my bills rising by 13% then 11% then 9% then 4-5% then 2-3% - all compounded on top of the previous rise. And no, Hunt, I don't believe that a fall in inflation means more money in my pocket. Inflation is inflation. Stop gaslighting us.

No tax rise could possibly affect me worse than the interest rate rises and inflationary rises, so you are not only being extremely unreasonable, you are also scare-mongering and gaslighting OP.

Same.

I just sighed and thought " Here we go... "

tinytemper66 · 22/05/2024 18:42

It won't be perfect as they will now be left to pay compensation for the blood and the PO injustices.

youngones1 · 22/05/2024 18:42

Labour is the tax party.

IndigoBabble · 22/05/2024 18:42

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country.

Same for me but I believe in socialism and the principle of a fairer and more equitable life.

ilovesooty · 22/05/2024 18:42

As for the infamous "there's no money left note" does anyone really still not understand that it's a tradition, oft repeated by different Chancellors?

Callmemel · 22/05/2024 18:43

Voting Labour.

It would be several millennia in hell before I voted Tory. I cannot count the ways they have fucked up the country, driven people to despair and hollowed out any infrastructure that supported people in need. I despise the women-hating fuckers.

SofaThrow · 22/05/2024 18:44

FutureFeelsBleak · 22/05/2024 18:30

Like fuck is Labour anti semitic. It is shit on many levels, but please, just no to trying to peddle that line.

I disagree.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 22/05/2024 18:45

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator yiu have a very poor knowledge of political history which you demonstrate time and time again. You do realise there have been other Labour governments since the 70s. And for the record my dh is on a good salary, we’ve never claimed benefits and we’d be better off under the Tories but we’re voting Labour because we can see the bigger picture 🙄.

ilovesooty · 22/05/2024 18:45

And why the "never lived in social housing" comment @DistinguishedSocialCommentator ?

SofaThrow · 22/05/2024 18:47

Wewelcomeyourfeedback · 22/05/2024 18:31

They’re noisy fuckers, aren’t they?! They don’t seem to understand that the 94% ish who don’t use private schools don’t care if they have to pay more because they are finally taxed properly.
They way they’re bleating on, you’d think their kids were being pulled out of Harrow and Roedean to be stuck up chimneys …

Well wait until the teacher shortage really starts to bite as many children who were in private schools get put in to state. And also, many parents send their child to private schools due to special needs and are really panicking - maybe you could have a bit of compassion.

pointythings · 22/05/2024 18:47

I remember 1997 - 2010. Things were incredibly better. Anyone denying that was not paying attention.

Are we going to get miracles? Nope, the pile of shit that needs fixing is too big for that. But we'll get a government that actively wants to turn things around and will do their best to manage it. They'll be boring, steady, capable and they won't make good satire.

I'm here for it.

OP is a wealthy buy to let landlord - of course they're going to vote Tory. I have two disabled young adult children (who both work). I feel differently.

Yes it is tradition to leave a note but not with those words! Did they not think that was a really stupid thing to write! Especially when people weee struggling

CoralReader · 22/05/2024 18:49

Justcats · 22/05/2024 18:50

Oh it's you again, OP

Nuff said.

Dazzledrop · 22/05/2024 18:50

Thousands up and down the country work incredibly hard OP and yet still struggle and can barely make ends meet let alone start worrying about their “one or two properties” or private school taxation. Many of the hardest, most gruelling jobs are the lowest paid and you’d probably do well to educate yourself about this before waxing lyrical about how amazingly self sufficient you are with no thought for how others circumstances might act as a barrier for them.

Can always tell a lot about a person when they vote solely based on self interest.

MrsBook · 22/05/2024 18:50

I'm not a great believer in any political party but the Conservative party have been so openly corrupt and self-serving, and my community has been so severely underfunded by their government that I am unlikely ever to vote for them again.

I have worries about labour too but I think they will at least try to fund the NHS and schools, and stop sewage flowing into rivers.
