AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

You’ll be pissed off if they do.

I love how sure they are that Labour won't. After the shit show we're currently in and have lived through.

BIossomtoes · 23/05/2024 21:13

It’s amazing that people still believe that myth when it flies in the face of facts. It’s a bit like believing in fairies.

Yeah it's like that shite about Tory economic competence and them being a low tax party - lies they like to tell themselves, but not reality.

I find Sunak relatively inoffensive on the whole but his claims to have mended the economy and be a hair's breadth from "solving" the small boats issue by sending a few people to Rwanda are frankly just laughable.

You’ll be pissed off if they do.

Why? I’d be delighted. This country right now is a shit hole. All the talent is leaving. Workers and people who have done well are over taxed. It’s impossible to recruit STEM talent. I hate the Tories for what they’ve done to this country. I don’t think Labour will make it any better. Populist, not very well thought out policies are suggesting that.

whistleblower99 · 23/05/2024 21:18

K0OLA1D · 23/05/2024 21:15

The only poster getting defensive? I'm not the one responding to every single person telling the poster 'off you trot' with the same daft reply?

The whole thing needs an overhaul. Businesses need to pay their fair share of tax, people who can, should. I'd pay more tax if it were guaranteed to help education and the NHS. Lots of people would.

Where did I use that phrase. Oh that’s right… I didn’t.

frankentall · 23/05/2024 21:18

whistleblower99 · 23/05/2024 21:14

Exactly that. Problem is Labour won’t make it any better.

They can't make it any worse. Especially not if they piss off a few nasty people who are so disloyal to this country that they sell themselves to the lowest tax shithole they can find - we are well rid of such parasites.

Parasites who are funding society? Yep ok.

Indeed I do
It was all down to Labour leaving the nation in an almost bankrupt status and that is a fact

Oh, you aren't referencing the infamous Treasury note, are you? 🤭🤭🤭

frankentall · 23/05/2024 21:19

14 years of Tories can do that for you can't it?

You responded to me and about 4 or 5 other posters (like a broken record) asking us if we were going to pay the tax instead of the benefit basher. I have just simply responded to you, as have others.

ICantThinkofAnythingClever · 23/05/2024 21:22

Listen, Tory friends. Very few people care anymore about the Distant Past or the Hypothetical Future of Labour Faults, and that's because your guys are complete and utter shit Right Now. They've been in power for 14 years, and everything is worse than 14 years ago by pretty much every measure possible.

There's more poverty, less wealth, rampant disease, the health system is a fucking mess, education is a fucking mess, everyone's nerves are at the point of breaking, Brexit was a ridiculous economic fuckup, THERE IS SHIT IN THE FUCKING WATER! Enough is enough, your current guys are bad at their jobs, they're incompetent. Goodbye. Time for them to be fired and go back to being just regular incompetent rich people for a while, as opposed to incompetent rich people paid from public pockets.

Nobody, in any job on Earth, would continue to receive more chances after such collosal fuckups. At this point I am ready to vote for a government led by squirrels and cats or literally anybody that will provide a change, I don't even care about the gender ID that keeps coming up in other threads, I'll vote for a woman with a penis instead of a nose or a talking turkey if it's someone who will stop shit from getting into the drinking water.

Crazy how they're leaving already innit. Ya know, before the election was even called, but its already labour's fault!

Well are you? You’re saying that you are happy for them to go. Happy to pay their tax? You may have noticed - I’ve not been on the thread at all really - unlike some because erm…I have a job. So no, not really been on the thread that much.

Ah mate, I too have a job. Work full time. Currently off sick though as I've just had my 4th joint replacement in 5 years at the age of 33. But the current government and the benefit basher up thread don't really give a shit about people like me do they. Bloody disabled bastard I am. Sucking up all the resources.

I have already said I'd pay more tax if it were to go directly to help education and the NHS. My partner works and pays tax, as does my entire family. They have all worked their entire lives.

As I also said, plenty of high earners are voting Labour. Everyone wants change apart from those loyal to the blue who don't give a shit about anyone else outside their garden gate.

You don't know this though do you. We 100% know the tories are yes. 14 years have proved that. But this Labour government haven't been given the chance for you to draw any conclusion.

Makes more sense to expect change from someone new with a different party in power than to vote for the current shitshow and know you're much likely going to end up with more of the same.

My gut instinct is usually right! I will vote & hope for a well run country but I still think they’re both shit!

Crikeyalmighty · 23/05/2024 21:39

I think this is a balancing act- and one reason why I think the country needs a total reset-

I'm happy to be upfront- I vote Lib Dem because I live in an area that votes Lib Dem - but would be happy to vote Labour too with Starmer in charge.

Having lived in Denmark for 20 months it's interesting to look how they did things- some wouldn't work due to scale but plenty would- the country has higher wages, higher tax however way more for your tax take. This meant most adults worked - even with young kids as childcare was reasonable and good- so most families had 2 incomes - although some women did work 20to 30 hours with kids . an average income after tax was similar to UK (as higher wages) but then childcare was around £250 to £280 a month- even with an under 1 .

Far more social housing of all types- including big apartments and houses.

They don't pay council tax in the way we do- it's kind of like a local tax as part of general taxation - so they don't pay out in the way we do- sane goes for NI.
Consequently there was far less need to be topping up incomes or paying towards housing unless someone was ill or disabled or going through a period of unemployment etc .

I think it's not tax that's the issue here , it's how little we get and how few are actually net contributors because so many need to take out the system to get by due to excessive childcare and housing costs . I understand that and it's a fact.

It's become the norm that people on low or even lower end of moderate incomes now need to sit and calculate if it makes sense to work - especially if they have childre n , childcare and rent to factor in and far more then end up doing not that many hours and tipping it up via benefits- and to be fair I don't blame them in that position

This needs totally looking at again- work needs to pay , and either far more social housing of a good standard needs to be built or lots of good shared ownerships started etc - not just 1 and 2 bed flats. Childcare needs to be subsidised heavily and good quality training and management opportunities in it

I really don't think that taxing anyone earning seriously good money over and above the current levels is of great help- @whistleblower99 is correct that it's a global world and some very skilled people will vote with their feet and no I don't mean your highly paid director of communications at the county council etc but senior scientists, surgeons, forensics, engineers etc -

AmpleFatball · 23/05/2024 21:46

A particular problem re high earners is, of course, Brexit - which has caused them to leave in droves.

It isn’t a problem that can be solved only with lowering tax rates; we went from being an integral part of the global business hub to a country that - for now - does not have easy, efficient or business friendly terms for import or export.

The Brexit vote has undoubtedly made us poorer and our economy likely needs a significant rethink, but we likely have to accept that the UK will likely never be as prosperous for businesses as it was pre-Brexit (well, “never” is a bit strong, but it’s not going to be a quick or easy fix).
