To think that botox, fillers, and other facial procedures are becoming too common?

I've just seen the recent pictures of the lovely Shania Twain. She's had so much facial work done that she looks unrecognizable! I find this such a shame given how naturally beautiful she's always been!

I also feel that facial work is causing a division between rich and poor women. I'm not sure what the answer to this is though?

I’ve warned him about girls who are too vain and obsessed with their looks. I think it’s a huge character flaw tbh”

why did you warn him?!

These threads always attract people who say they have botox but it's ok as "no one can tell".

I'm here to tell you - they can.

I'm here to tell no one can... have a medical professional administer it to you. No one wants a frozen face, similarly no one wants hard fake breasts, it's not attractive, no one wants duck lips either, I've had hair extensions that have looked ridiculous, I've also had amazing ones,, it's subjective & again like I said maybe it is cost prohibative, which isn't cool

These threads are filled with of people who can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that there is no way in gods creation they can know if they can tell when people have had work. It's such ludicrous claim. It's obvious that the only time you can tell is when....you can tell. The times you can't tell are the times you can't tell.

I don’t think it’s a trend that will ever go away. The difference is good work and bad work. Look at Demi Moore, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper. All have had great work done. Demi Moore looks 20 years younger than she is.

Demi Moore! Have you seen her recently? If she looks younger than her years it is because of good diet, exercise, good posture and good bone structure and skin tone. But the work she's had done has given her Joker mouth.

Demi Moore is looking amazing. She's looking better than she has in decades.

I agree that Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt have had really good work done.

Because such shallowness is not an attractive trait in someone. He’s also been warned about having one night stands. Basically if you wouldn’t want to have a child with her -don’t shag her!

You do know that you can have a bit of Botox and be a bit vain and still be a really lovely person, right?
I have warned my DD about dating boys with mothers like you.

Absolutely. I was convinced about a few things about Pamela Anderson a min ago, lip filler, Botox etc and then was like “actually I’m not so sure” I think those of us that do have these things can sometimes detect the more subtle tweakments but it’s hard to tell even then, when it’s obvious is when it’s been done badly or the person has gone too far

XenoBitch · 10/05/2024 21:32

I don't care who has it tbh. But I do worry that because it is so common, it will become one of those things that women are expected to do... like shaving legs and armpits... and you are some grotty person with no standards if you don't.

CharlotteRumpling · 10/05/2024 07:49

See, I don't want to look like Demi Moore. I want to look like my mum. I don't expect anyone will believe me but it's true. I am in my fifties and have had no tweakments, and will have none.

I also don't want my DD to think she needs to look young to be worthy of love and respect.

I am in my fifties and like my wrinkles, though nobody believes me either. I would hate for them to disappear. They are the evidence of the life I have lived. I look at my 19y daughter and think that this is her ‘time’ to be young. I don’t need to look like her. I still think I look good though, just a 53y version!

I don’t get any self respecting medical professional would want to do this stuff. It’s not medical treatment,it’s making money out of people’s insecurities.

The same can be said of dentures, dental implants etc, people with no teeth can still eat, why would they want a mouth full of teeth? Reconstructive surgery is also cosmetic a lot of the time rather than for any health benefits, what about mental health benefits though

There is no way reconstructive surgery can be compared with someone wanting bigger lips.

DojaPhat · 11/05/2024 14:30

I also feel that facial work is causing a division between rich and poor women. I'm not sure what the answer to this is though?

I genuinely never thought I'd live to see the day that access to cosmetic procedures would become a sticking point in women's inequalities. Confused

Above all else how does it impact you? The answer to that is not related to the societal pressures and subsequent impact on girls and women - because the answer to that would be transparency policies on social media platforms both in terms of a disclaimer that explicitly outlines each treatment anyone has had including those who aren't trying to push a product and an outline of what filters/effects or photoshopping was done on the image. So we arrive back to the question, how does it impact you?

KimberleyClark · 11/05/2024 14:19

No, I’m not saying there is, I’m saying in that dentures provide no health value either, they do make the person feel better about how they look though. I’m sure there are cases out there of someone who’s maybe had some accident and their lips are mis shaken from it where a doctor of some sort my suggest a very small amount of lip filler done by someone who knows what they are doing (not some woman on Facebook who’s done 2 days training for £500) someone very skilled can place the smallest amounts in the right places to reshape. My partner was offered at a hospital to have Botox to re align his eye as one was still after surgery still a little turned and it wasn’t enough for another operation

Cool
But many of them do.
I have a friend who is a highly respected Cambridge educated surgeon who works for the NHS and does private. For the nhs she reconstructs breasts. Post cancer, uneven development etc and also does some minor reconstructive work on other areas.
In her private practice she administers injectables and performs breast augmentations and tummy tucks.
You may well think she's a terrible person. She's fab and amazing and her work has helped thousands of cancer victims and young women with malformed breasts.. Her private work in no way negates this.

UghFletcher · 11/05/2024 15:46

I have Botox, I had very deep set wrinkles at 35 and they are now completely gone. its given me more confidence for sure. I'm not one who would have lip fillers or filler anywhere in general, I have had my eyebrows micro bladed but more so that I spend less time faffing about with make up in the morning! It helps me feel better in myself and that's all that matters.

My only worry is the cheap treatments on offer these days, I did an awful lot of research and read many reviews before I chose the person I go to. It seems a lot of offers on Facebook and other social media sites for very cut price treatments leads to issues down the line for people.

In your 50s you’d never be mistaken for a 19 yo even with a face lift.

Why do you think that people who have tweakments have insecurities? Genuine question.

Do you think the same of other beauty treatments like tinting eyelashes, dying hair etc. Are those about insecurities too? And what about anything else that enhances someone’s visual appearance?

ReadySetSit · 11/05/2024 16:14

I’ve just got home from a day out in central London and lost count of how many really awful lip filler I saw on mainly young women.

don’t think it’s necessarily insecurity, but a changed beauty ideal for younger women.

can’t get on board with it. It looks absolutely awful. I’m sure they don’t care what I think anyway! But to my eyes, it looks like mutilation. These perfectly lovely young women with good skin and youthful beauty…and then these weird, rubbery lips that don’t move like natural lips and that they’re constantly licking. Just so, so odd.

shaniatwainfan · 11/05/2024 17:01

I've just name changed to comment on this thread!
I am, or maybe was, a massive Shania fan.

She used to be so natural, looked amazing but real.
I am gobsmacked by her appearance now and her attitude in general. Sure, it's up to her, but personally I don't like it. I'm voting with my feet and won't be seeing her in concert again.

I'm sure there must be so much pressure for celebs to look good and this filters down to us normal mortals too. I work with lots of young women, and many are having Botox and fillers at an age that really doesn't warrant it. Most live at home with parents as they are unable to afford to buy a house, therefore they have the disposable income to spend on their appearances.

Who would have thought this was down to the cost of housing??? But if they were able to afford housing they may not be throwing money at Botox and fillers quite so readily. This is not a criticism by the way, but I bought a house in my early twenties (I appreciate I was lucky to do so) and that's where all my money went....

Completely agree. It does feel like mutilation, it's so uncomfortable to witness. Hate it for our youth (aware I sound ancient 😂)
